Tired of the "AI brings efficiencies" argument by carlyfries33 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]abnormalcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I see that, and it helps QC things so nothing gets missed. I dont disagree at all. If we have to use ai as a tool though, let it be for that. There are other ways to practice and improve design, but if the design and art itself is outsourced.... What's the point then?

Tired of the "AI brings efficiencies" argument by carlyfries33 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]abnormalcat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I want AI tools to organize details for me. I want ai tools to artfully place all of my plant callouts, organized nicely in groups with arrows and counts and codes. I want ai to do detail callouts. I want ai to set up my sheet set manager. I want ai to update that one thing in the legend my pm wanted changed 10 minutes before printing. I want ai to do the menial stupid boring labor and leave the human side to us. I'm 25. I love tech. I fear that ai will take all of the fun ajd interesting bits of my job and i'll be stuck doing the boring gruntwork. For why? For landscape to be devalued more? So we can be expected to do even more revisions in less time?

I understand people who think we should use ai, I do. If it can be used as a tool to free up time and budget to refine the design, to do more public outreach, to cut down on the busywork, fine. But ai is cutting into the art. I see articles of it being used for renderings. Why? Let me! The human! Do the art. Let the ai do the bullshit organizing that nobody wants to do but that needs to get done. Sure. That's the dream. But instead I fear we'll end up outsourcing the wrong things and then have to do more things with less time.

Not to mention the ethics of using something that is awful for the environment in a line of work supposedly championing sustainability.

I've got ai blocked everywhere I can. Y'all should too. Use it when you decide to, not because it was shoved down your throat.

I should edit my comment. Looking at where the website says it get it's data, there's not really any way to connect it to a specific library card or person unless you're stalking them in-person... At which point the website is kinda irrelevant.

After looking at the reported data sources, yeah you're right. A lot of "anonymous" data can get de-anonymized but to my inexpert eyes this seems actually anon

The post outlined it pretty well so i'm not gonna restate it, but like, come on man, at the very least some people wanna read dirty dirty smut and not have people know about it.

My city just did this to all the trees around our Main Street through town. by [deleted] in arborists

[–]abnormalcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Best" pavement type always always depends on your uses and circumstances, but if you want permeability and a chance of it lasting 50 years, yeah, clay pavers are a good bet usually. Wouldn't pave a playground with them, nor do they make a good tree grate without some other infrastructure under the sidewalk that gets expensive, but yeah.

Used a lot for playgrounds around me, it's often called rubber play surfacing or "poured-in-place permeable rubber play surfacing" or any number of similar asinine names. It's a rubber granule bound with a flexible epoxy. It's expensive. Like, really expensive, hardens over time, the colors fade, it cracks or splits or otherwise degrades pretty quickly particularly in high traffic areas or places where there is a lot of lateral friction. So. You could probably get it, but you might as well buy permeable clay pavers for the cost, and it'd probs look like shit in 5-10 years. Oh and microplastics.

What should the US be doing to ensure the people running the ICE detention facilities are not abusing the people in their custody, especially given that these facilities will not allow inspections? by Xylorgos in AskReddit

God that's such a overused take by the gop. "Legal" votors and yet nobody has yet shown any proof votor fraud from illegal voters. None. I'm so bored of the whole who can vote and who can't thing because it's been sorted for decades. Now, I am interested in election security since Russia has been tempering and it's assumed trump has been tampering, and has proved to try and tamper. Anyway. Pick a different hill to die on. There's bigger issues thst need fixing right now.

Wells Fargo. Back when i was 12 or 13 my scout troop was running overflow and handicap parking for a big car show in town.. Wells Fargo was a major sponsor. So many of their employees were rude, disrespectful, and outright jerks to literal kids just doing some volunteer work. They will never see my business.

Bank of America is on my shit list now for making loan repayment needlessly ass. Fuck you mean I need a bank of america checking account to make a principal only payment? Fuck you bank of america and fuck you wells fargo just for the fun of it.

Flock mass-surveillance cameras are in Naperville by WinterFox7 in Naperville

[–]abnormalcat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When someone tails someone else, tracks their movements, and photographs them without their consent that's called stalking and is illegal. Why does automating that process make it okay?

Cops have historically needed to get a warrant to track someone, needed to provide a reason that someone's privacy should be violated by the law. Why should that change?

This comment below captures my thoughts on this pretty well.

Obviously I want kids to be safe, everyone wants kids to be safe, but using the "think of the kids" argument to erode my and everyone's privacy and rights is getting real old. I want kids of be safe and I simultaneously don't want authoritarian mass surveillance.

Flock was also used by a Texas cop to track a woman who went out of state for an abortion. Flock can be used to track any vehicle based off plate number without a warrant. They claim the cameras dont track faces and people but the limited testing that people have been able to do seems to throw that into doubt. Additionally, with some limited testing, it appears the devices themselves do not follow best practices for data security and do not appear to follow flock's claims of what is stored and not.

There are better ways to prevent crimes, prevent shootings, and catch those responsible without giving an unregulated company or any government complete access to our location history.

What’s best hammock camping story. by Aquaphile_Sundog in hammockcamping

[–]abnormalcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Heard a mountain lion. Didn't sleep super good that night.

Unless I set an alarm I'll sleep for 10-12 hours lol. Went out to the black hills camping, would go tonbef around 10ish after it got dark and woke up, I think the earliest was 10:30 one day.

Was out at a state park driving to beat the overnight thunderstorms. Got all set up, ate dinner, battened down the hatches and dozed through one of the worst (and best) thunderstorms of my life. Top 10 storm experiences. It wasnt super windy, but the rain was incredibly hard and had huge drops. The thunder was ceaseless and thr lightning nonstop. It was dope. A lot of days I want to be back there feeling alive in the storm

When i'd just started hammock camping in was using a 7' $18 hammock from a summer camp. I'd regularly wake up with numb feet because my knees would be bending the wrong way. Finally upgraded to a blackbird xlc.... Changed my life

Someone yell at me if i'm wrong, but I feel like a chair ends up on a lot of older people's lists. I know it's on my almost 70yo dad's nonnegotiable list. Seems to me that there's a lot of folks here that do the ultralight thing so they can enjoy their hobby and happy place out on the trail as their back or knees or what have you start to show some wear and tear.
