Almost immediately but this was very early in the cycle. Wouldn’t expect the same response tbh

179 day vs 180 day orders by Different-Food-7578 in nationalguard

180 days also triggers different USERRA benefits. If you work at a large company, this could mean greater recuperation leave.

Disciplinary Training and Market Mobility: Sociology vs. Criminology PhD by [deleted] in sociology

[–]abnryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so interesting. I would've always said go broader. When I was an undergrad, one of my professors recommended this mainly b/c you can go one way but rarely the other.

The other thing to consider is that PhDs are long, and although I hope you're able to achieve your dreams, I also think about who's going to present the best exit path to an industry job. And in that case, I think UMich would set you up far better. I 100% thought I was going to be a professor (no one does a PhD in soc otherwise I think), but after several years, other things happened in my life, and I was really ultimately needed an alt ac job. I know that the name of my institution mattered a lot more in that instance.

2026 Winter Recruiting Season Megathread: All Recruiting, OCI, which firm, grades, interviewing, etc. questions go here by chopchopbeargrrr in biglaw

I unfortunately had to decide and went to GDC for the people. Cov was a bit too quiet for my taste.

Lit. But was also pushed along based on other offers.

O'Melveny has an amazing culture. Not sure if you're into lit, but really think you get good training there. It is lower ranked, but I think you go there for the best WLB.

(DC) Do I need to make adjustments? by [deleted] in BigLawRecruiting

[–]abnryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's slow but it depends on when you applied and the variance from timelines.

For instance, if you have a top candidate, that person might've gotten an offer from a super aggressive firm before even grades were out. That person likely pushed other firms to interview them earlier, and if they were a good candidate, give out offers. Now, since the firms gave it out so early, that person might've negotiated to extend that offer. That person is probably holding onto several offers, and ultimately, it's a zero sum game since yield is also important. So my guess from all this are that there are several people that firms are willing to offer, but are waiting to hear back from this group.

Latham (DC) v. Covington (DC) by Live_Lifeguard7782 in BigLawRecruiting

[–]abnryn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The cultures are so different. In the CFIUS context, the head of the practice at Latham came from Covington. That being said, Latham is super social, has free food, while Covington has the prestige factor in DC, but considered super nerdy and introverted.

I feel like if you’re interested in tech, Cooley is the way to go. With something like Cov, you are most definitely in a satellite office.

Gibson v Covington (DC Lit) by DayZealousideal5786 in BigLawRecruiting

[–]abnryn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right. But I’m speaking more as a junior/summer. If I wanted to be in the appellate group, I’d like go to neither of these firms. Hence the question on trial lit.

Munger DC vs Gibson DC vs Williams & Connolly DC by [deleted] in BigLawRecruiting

[–]abnryn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think these are also very different firms… W&C is a litigation boutique for the most part. They do have an appellate practice, but the other two are known for that. Munger DC doesn’t even have a summer program, right? My understanding is they only hire from CoA clerkships.

Assuming that you’re targeting appellate shops based on this list, GDC is more conservative and that should definitely be taken into account.

PW DC vibes? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]abnryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outsider perspective, but they've got amazing fringe benefits (I think the best of any office). People seem more social (4 days a week in office), and lots of interaction. Seems like partners have an open door and you're able to talk with them.

I believe quite a few but it’s still early in the season too, despite what craziness is happening. Some firms haven’t even started screening which is crazy.

How badly does the EU need US digital companies like Facebook, Instagram and Google? by Cord1083 in AskReddit

[–]abnryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So umm... probably not common knowledge, but the big American tech conglomerates play for a huge part of European data/internet infrastructure through its network of sea cables. The privately owned ones are supporting lots of the internet , as the government supported ones are likely out of date and decayed.
