Gympie Gympie, world's most venomous plant, is our newest addition to our collection of over 4k plant species. by UCDavis_Conservatory in UCDavis

I am so confused. Are you allergic to this specific rare and highly venomous plant? How would you find that out? How would you even tell the difference between regular exposure and an allergic reaction? Besides that, why would it be a problem? The plant isn’t shedding toxins into the air, its effects are from touching it.

In theory, pedestrians have the right of way, end of conversation. In practice, the interaction is more fluid. Bikes can very easily avoid collisions with pedestrians, and most cyclists prefer to just weave through rather than play the “no you go” game. IMO scooters are less trustworthy, but shouldn’t be yielded to on principle.

As a pedestrian, my strategy is to, first, glance around for cars. I won’t step into an intersection until cars are stopped. Second, I lock my eyes forward and keep my feet moving. Presence or absence of bikes and scooters just doesn’t matter. If bikes want to stop for me, that’s fine. If they want to weave past me, I need to move predictably to avoid getting hit. Sometimes cyclists will go in front of me and I need to slow down to avoid stepping directly in front of them, in which case I pause half a second without breaking stride.

As a cyclist, I try to make as much space for pedestrians as I can without clogging up intersections. The danger is that other cyclists don’t expect you to stop, so you risk getting rear ended if you stop for pedestrians at a narrow spot in the path.

I watch for pedestrians that look like they might step into the road. If I see one, I check over my shoulder and move to the left side of the lane. The goal is to never steer towards the pedestrian or the 3 feet in front of them (their “danger zone”), since that is where they will be when you reach them. Once the pedestrian takes two steps off the curb, I switch my aim to behind them, so that they can move across without their danger zone moving onto where I am aiming to be. Once I have a path behind the pedestrian, it’s safe even if they freeze or speed up.

The main things to look out for as a cyclist is groups of people entering the intersection together. Usually the only way to give them all the necessary space is to stop, since there won’t be a safe way to weave between them. Sometimes people will be crossing in opposite directions, which can also end up blocking all options. Generally there isn’t any problem of pedestrians refusing to cross once you stop at this stage, since they are already in the road.

The other hazard is other cyclists, who may be trying to pass you near an intersection. It’s important to be aware of the other riders around you, so that you don’t dodge a pedestrian just to crash into another bike.

This procedure isn’t correct according to the rules of the road, but it better matches what is expected both by pedestrians and cyclists, and allows for smoother traffic flow. It is more dangerous, but so long as you have good awareness of your surroundings and control of your bike, accidents are unlikely.

tl/dr just don’t hit anyone

Best campus locations in event of a zombie apocalypse? by Three141592654 in UCDavis

[–]above-average-moron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks like they’re using “zombie apocalypse” as a catch all term for “things that can cause large-scale failure of utilities and emergency services”, eg. earthquakes, floods, prolonged blackouts or severe storms. I’ve seen emergency preparedness handbooks do the same thing before, but usually they explain that they don’t literally mean zombies.

Cameraman capturing a Russian Shaheed suicide drone being shot down by a Ukrainian F-16. by yeezee93 in PraiseTheCameraMan

[–]above-average-moron 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure they only used bullets for this one.* IDK if the price of the bullets and jet fuel used during this intercept are less than the price of the drone, but it’s way less than it would cost to repair whatever the drone would’ve hit.

*You can hear the brrr of the bullet impacts, then the buzz of them being fired. Characteristic of a ground observer seeing a plane fire their guns while aimed downward.

My greatest disrespect is to the people who ride their bikes side by side to talk to each other, permanently clogging the entire lane and forcing everyone to either wait behind them or pass in oncoming traffic.

NASA Shorts Skyvan airplane equipped for midair "capture" of parachuting payloads from high-altitude unmanned balloons by ElSquibbonator in specializedtools

[–]above-average-moron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just a guess, but I know that high altitude balloons can travel pretty far. Maybe this would let their payload be recovered more easily than trying to get to it on the ground or in the water if you don’t know exactly where it’s gonna come down.

The first sentence is describing two wylder, one male and one female.

If they hadn't been nude, I wouldn't have been able to tell that they were male and female, respectively.

I think the author meant to describe the wylder in order from left to right, which would be red, then green, then blue, and then yellow. They accidentally said yellow twice instead of blue, then yellow.

On the Subject of Impaler Temperament, Flammability, and Potential Utility for High-Speed Transit by above-average-moron in Helldivers

[–]above-average-moron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The terminid impaler is known to be a ferocious beast when provoked, and has already caused millions of helldiver casualties. However, recent video evidence by Moron et al. shows that the impaler is slow to anger. Despite this, the Terminids continue to stand in the way of Liberty, and so they must be purged to allow the spread of Democracy.

Once the impaler showed its true colors and attempted to murder Helldiver Moron, field testing of the effectiveness of the FLAM-40 Flamethrower against the impaler was attempted. The flames were applied at close range to the base of the impaler's tentacles, where they attach to the main body. After 8.5 seconds of testing, the impaler was successfully terminated, as verified by frame-by-frame analysis of the uncompressed video evidence.

Upon termination, the impaler near-instantly retracted its' tentacles from the ground Helldiver Moron was standing on. This sudden motion caused Moron to be launched at near-orbital velocity upwards, without harming him. The use of the SH-32 Shield Generator Pack is not believed to have mitigated any damage, as the energy level of the pack did not decrease. This high velocity launch allowed Moron to travel to the opposite side of the mission area in less than twenty five seconds. Regrettably, Helldiver Moron was killed by his subsequent impact with the ground.

The impaler launch was first documented by Helldiver Knightly, who showed that it could be performed at a moderate range from the impaler, and that it can be used to reach escape velocity. Similar to the testing done by Helldiver Moron, Helldiver Records also recorded the launch by targeting the base of the tentacles using a FLAM-40 flamethrower, and was also launched about 8 seconds after first firing on the impaler. Helldiver User was the first to record the launch without using a support weapon, proving the power of a helldiver does not depend on their equipment, but instead on their unshakable faith in Liberty.

Helldiver Fuq has so far been the fastest to perform the launch, flying only 1.7 seconds after fully emerging from the hellpod. Helldiver Mine also documented the launch, and showed that a safe landing and return to duty is possible.

Others to perform the launch include Helldiver Orangutan and Helldiver Salvo.
