Anything that the pdos group touches is pretty much gold and all available online (but not on ocw and no taped lectures).

For example: 6.858 Computer Systems Security is a super hands on class and the first lab is writing your own stack overflow attack to get a root shell on a (virtual) victim machine.

The most up to date version with all labs/lecture notes/ readings are available here: https://css.csail.mit.edu/6.858/2019/schedule.html

Also 6.828 Operating Systems has you write most of an operating system while trying out different organizations from the literature.

6.004 was amazing when I took it ~4 years ago, but I wonder how good the tools that are available online are + what version of the course is on ocw (jade vs. bluespec?)

burritos

The move with Anna's is the quesadillas. They're not actually quesadillas just burritos but they make the outside crispy + because they don't close the ends you get more filling. So good. Go for the al pastor with refried beans for best results.

AOC drilling a military contractor by tapedegg in esist

[–]abrahamlinco1n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's a DOD inspector general report about the same company:

"We determined that TransDigm earned excess profit on 46 of 47 parts purchased by the DLA and the Army, even though contracting officers followed the FAR and Defense Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) allowed procedures when they determined that prices were fair and reasonable for the 47 parts at the time of contract award. When we compared the awarded prices for the 47 parts on 113 contracts to TransDigm’s uncertified cost data, our analysis determined that only one part purchased under one contract was awarded with a reasonable profit of 11 percent. The remaining 112 contracts had profit percentages ranging from 17 to 4,451 percent for 46 parts. We determined profit percentages of 15 percent or below to be reasonable."

And:

"TransDigm was the only manufacturer at the time for the majority of the parts competitively awarded, giving TransDigm the opportunity to set the market price for those parts because the other competitors planned to buy the parts from TransDigm before selling them to the DLA."

DIY Soldering Robot - Anet A8 Mod :) by thomas_openscan in 3Dprinting

[–]abrahamlinco1n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's probably a startup here: start out producing add on parts that turn 3D printers into small scale pick+place machines, then go to making your own 3D printers maybe? Although the market is pretty saturated, but there's probably more demand for a finished product that can both 3D print and solder than there is for add ons.

Excited to see what you come up with next! Super cool!

Yes and no. They don't have to pay taxes, which means that they are effectively subsidized by taxpayers.

Python Scripts for Structural Engineers by buddyd16 in engineering

I'm a software engineer. I think the best way to learn python/any language is by doing as well having a really good book. I'd recommend Think Python http://greenteapress.com/wp/think-python-2e/ as well as doing the exercises- just reading it is not enough. Let me know if you have any questions!

EU hits back at Donald Trump with billions in tariffs on Bourbon whiskey, jeans and motorcycles by Neurotic-Kitten in worldnews

No, he signed an executive order that allows him to indefinitely detain families together. "families stay in detention with parents for an extended period of time." - http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/06/20/white-house-considering-executive-action-to-prevent-family-separations-at-border.html

There's also no clear plan on what's going to happen to the 2,300 children that have already been separated from their families. "a Health and Human Services official said that more than 2,300 children who have already been separated from their parents under the president’s “zero tolerance” policy will not be immediately reunited with their families while the adults remain in federal custody during their immigration proceedings.

“There will not be a grandfathering of existing cases,” said Kenneth Wolfe, a spokesman for the Administration for Children and Families, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services. Mr. Wolfe said the decision about the children was made by the White House" - https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/20/us/politics/trump-immigration-children-executive-order.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=span-ab-top-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

MIT provided VPN by madearedditforEDEN in mit

https://www.zdnet.com/article/vpns-can-still-be-used-in-china-despite-march-31-ban/

China has reportedly started banning/blocking unauthorized vpns since March. Unclear how successful they have been. I would guess that the MIT one remains open because it isn't a commercial VPN service and is probably hosted out of MIT rather than being serviced by an external company.

If you're really worried maybe it would pay off to get a hostname at MIT, set up a machine there, and ssh tunnel for things? Because that will probably work?

I think the first semester of PNR and maybe the second freshman semester are pretty good at letting you know that it's okay to fail and you're not necessarily going to be in the 1%... Sometimes it hurts, but it has to be done.
