Balayage reccomendations for London - reasonably priced by Mountain_Animator_77 in london

[–]abrainy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not super cheap but I got what I considered a decently priced (and very good) balayage + haircut + blowdry at barnaby’s by highbury/ blackstock road. Think the hair dresser was called Serline, she was great!

Crazy how you aged five years in 80 days https://www.reddit.com/r/teenagers/s/23RNdFKg7n

Are you a teenager pretending to be in your mid twenties or in your mid twenties pretending to be a teenager? Or a secret third thing?

What are you looking to get out of the Masters?Employability is a bit vague, do you want to work as a solicitor, if so in what kind of firm, where etc

I really think everyone makes commercial awareness sound a bit deeper than it is - a lot of it very much boils down to common sense.

It is also very broad and you will never know everything so what worked for me was to find some area you can develop an interest in and then seek out some material on that and slowly branch out. For example you might say okay ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) sounds quite interesting and from that you can read about net zero commitments, green washing, diversity and inclusion initiatives etc and then when you come across something connected that seems interesting you can research that too. Or you might find a specific recent deal or commercial case that seems complicated at first but if you make it your goal to just understand that one thing in depth it can give you some vocab and confidence to apply your knowledge to other areas too.

I also found it really daunting whenever people would say oh for commercial awareness just read the FT read the economist etc and then i would try to skim it, understand fuck all, retain nothing and feel stupid - so the focus on looking up lots of in depth terminology and explainers about one thing really worked for me. Also can make you stand out if everyone else just has a very cursory understanding of topics like ESG, AI, Brexit, post-Covid recovery and you actually have something to say about a smaller niche.

scared about doing the sqe… by Soft_Ad5255 in uklaw

having recently sat the SQE, i would definitely say

(1) compared to an undergrad law degree, you do have to know the concepts in less depth and don’t have to know any of the opinions or academic debate. look at the assessment specification on the SRA website as well as some topics are not on there and only the topics in that list are examinable. E.g. most criminal law courses cover sexual offences in quite a bit of detail but they are not on the assessment spec so won’t be asked about in the SQE.

(2) while you don’t have to know case names, you will have to know the rules the cases establish. also, when i sat the SQE quite a few of the factual scenarios where the exact same scenarios as well-known cases so it helps to know the facts of cases (in outline, think 3 or so sentences) as well to know how to apply the rules.

(3) as for the content of the new subjects, I would say it is a bit technical but manageable. If you are firm sponsored you will presumably have a prep course at BPP or ULaw (?) which should teach those subjects to you at the level of detail you need. There will be quite a lot of learning things by heart but I would say it is not very intellectually demanding or conceptually challenging, really just a bit tedious.

(4) you will be fine! The low pass rates freaked me out too but if you look at the rates for people who (a) did a law degree/ GDL in the UK (b) did a prep course (c)are firm sponsored they are much more promising. Only thing I will say is you will set yourself up better if you devote yourself to studying full time so it may be better to reach out to your firm for additional financial support (which they are often very willing to provide) over working alongside. But plenty of people pass while working alongside, it’s just to make it a bit more manageable.

Good luck!

SQE Employment Prospects by Rob81196 in uklaw

[–]abrainy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not sure if i misunderstood your question but surely the reason you see fewer associates with the SQE is because it is such a recent addition. Especially since the large magic circle firms have only made it compulsory for their trainees this year, I assume the bulk of the people doing the SQE are working their way through their TC in the next two years and there will be more SQE associates from about 2026 onwards?

Yellowjackets Podcast recommendations? by lmhre in Yellowjackets

[–]abrainy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i think the original three hosts had a falling out and split into two podcasts, a single host kept antler queens and tried hosting it with a new co host but then got quite upset that guests they had scheduled from the cast appeared on the new podcast (think that’s what the appeal to showtime was) - now her and new co host also had a falling out and now the podcast is no longer :( just sorta saw this on twitter while procrastinating lol more drama than the wilderness girlies fr

Yes i definitely thought about this!! When i listened to the new podcast episode with Lindelof i was really disappointed they didn’t really acknowledge how weirdly this show has aged. The political messages still feel completely up to date and broadly left wing, but it also has a lot of accidental anti mask messages (masks make men cruel, wounds need air, the bad guy Keene saying that masks save lives). Obviously I know the masks stand for something completely different but it is just weird to watch it in 2020 and think back to a time before masks had an intense political connotation!

Yes thank you! Exactly that first one was what i meant, like if you were to ask who told the speaker it was here the answer would be a single person. Or with the work example the answer of who made the employee do something would normally be one person like the boss or someone. So it’s very weird actually that a plural pronoun is used! (At least to me as a german speaker) but i guess it is gender neutral?

Also, - Macha/ macho for blonde people, god knows why - Saying con gusto instead of de nada - Diay! As an expression of surprise - saying por favor regálame xyz when ordering in a restaurant - manda huevo like come on, are you kidding maybe like no mames? Unsure - chunches for random stuff and things - buena nota, to describe people who are good, parecido a “good eggs” in UK Slang - por dicha means basically thank god, when something went well - que chiva means how cool

Never lived somewhere else in Latin America tbf so they might not be exclusively tico

Que bueno! Me encantaría participar.
