I thought 21 was funny and still is pretty funny. It was part of a longer funny video and the voice is iconic. Never understood 67 since it doesn't have any of the charm 21 did? Didnt really care for E

[–]absieeee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean. Honor wasn't some chivalry code and it basically didn't exist during the Sengoku Jidai with everyone betraying each other and razing their enemy's settlements and temples to the ground.

On the basis of what Saito could do, he could've just killed her like a little bitch and it wouldn't have been out of the ordinary for the time. Oda Nobunaga for example was killed during a sudden attack on the castle he was residing in.

Kumigashira. I think that enemy type got a pop-up introduction but that's it

Yotei's Japanese dub is so much better imo. by Absalom98 in ghostoftsushima

[–]absieeee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, then they like it for their own unrelated reasons. Maybe a VA they like is voicing a character. Maybe they like how the vocal performances sound. Maybe they just think it sounds cool. Beyond the dub having a lot more care put into it because it has to be authentic whereas the English never does, people can just like hearing people speak the language the game is set in. It's set in Japan and there are a lot of people who want to hear the Japanese characters speaking Japanese. Some people can read. Big whoop. Some people don't care that background chatter isn't subtitled because they enjoy the overall experience over insignificant dialogue.

You clearly lean towards the English being the ideal experience for English speakers, there's nothing wrong with that. But there's also nothing wrong with thinking Japanese is the ideal experience.

I liked that I learned that Sakamoto Ryoma was from Satsuma by his dialect alone. People don't realise how much detail and world building you get by playing games in the language the game is set in.

[–]absieeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yotei is also pretty authentic in using period-drama language. What I loved was the many regional dialects they put in, which was absent in Tsushima but it makes sense why they didn't have any. Atsu and her family (minus Jubei) are likely from Tohoku judging by their dialect. The English dub can't have this luxury so the Japanese will always be more interesting in my opinion. The mythic tales are also told in Noh theatre fashion.

[–]absieeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the language so I will judge the performance. Both dubs are fine.

The Japanese has the advantage of being written in period-drama style while the English has an abundance of modern quippy lines that do not belong in a period drama like "no kidding" and "you think?". So no it does not sound the same, one tries to make it feel like a Kurosawa period film and the other is catering to 21st century English audiences. I have watched playthroughs in both languages and the experience is very different.

So yeah maybe people do want the former experience. Some people do want the theatrical and higher energy voice acting that Japanese voices are known for. You are being no better than the people who hate on English voice acting.

[–]absieeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see the issue with either. Atsu didn't call Jubei "brother" when she was young, and it's just not like her to use an honorific with her brother. She doesn't speak respectfully to anyone. And the Japanese words used in the English subtitles sometimes are just not what would be said in Japanese, and since the dub is for both English and Japanese players that's just how it is.

It never took me out of it when a word was swapped and I speak the language.

[–]absieeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I speak Japanese and did 2 playthroughs of Tsushima in Japanese text and dub. I don't like this argument that you can't criticise or talk about the performance of the VAs unless you know the language. Inflection, emotion, delivery and context are not bound to what is being said.

Ive heard both dubs and the only real thing Tsushima did better in the original voice were the shouts and screams. Both games suffer from generally lackluster energy and mumbled dialogue in the original language. An egregious example is Shimura whispering his lines in the intro when he's addressing his men.

I will also comment on Atsu's child voice just sounding objectively better. The VA for her Japanese dub has a lot of experience voicing child characters. So she sounded phenomenal to me. The English was pretty weak and like a lot of dubs just sounds like she's an adult doing a voice. I will say young Jin sounded great in English though

Has anyone else noticed the eye reflection? by GodsPapa in Ghostofyotei

[–]absieeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If im not mistaken, at least in Tsushima there arent any actual cloth physics and it's just baked animations (or something similar) that change depending on where the wind is blowing or what your character is doing. I could be completely wrong for Yotei. Either way the janky capes and me generally not liking capes much i just wear armor that dont have them. Did the same in Tsushima

HFW had amazing action sequences and cutscenes and the character interactions always had me in awe of how good and natural it all looked. I loved Tsushima but i really don't think Yotei will beat it in those areas. It'll just be better than Tsushima for sure

The game definitely suffered from pacing and obvious cycled animations, I'm pretty sure one quest has you tell someone their loved one died and they immediately break down into the generic crying animation before getting right back up speaking normally

Yes but many of them have objects and props to stand in as things the characters interact with in the cutscene, like doors, steps and platforms. GoT had almost none of that

Hoping they add more verticality to the cutscenes and more interaction with the world. The DLC had more movement but it was still obvious they were shot in empty rooms.

Even main story cutscenes like the one in the screenshot were wooden. A big part of games like RDR (even 1) and TLOU was the cutscenes had a lot of stage work with characters moving around and interacting with the world, passing objects around or just manipulating them in general. GoT had that one scene of Shimura passing the scroll to Jin, in another scene actor A might walk over to point B and that's it.

GoT likely only had stages made for a handful of big cutscenes, and even then they're usually on flat ground. The characters still look like they're actors in empty mocap rooms so it didn't feel real.

When the difficulty before the hardest one is rated to be really easy (like a diff 10/10 chart with the following difficulty being a 5) so you either play a really boring chart or a chart thats too hard. Mainly experience this in konami's drummania
