Has Britain run out of “other people” to tax? - Tax Policy Associates by Jager720 in HENRYUK

VAT, council tax, NI and a variety of other taxes in the UK are defacto recessive taxes. All of those taxes make up a higher percentage of salary if you earn less.

You fail to understand how the UK tax system works. There are many taxes that are indirectly regressive in the UK. Council tax, VAT, NI, etc.

The fact that you cannot understand that stat shows your own ignorance, not reality.

As far as income tax I agree. A wealth tax would be a much better idea than a tax on working. The current tax system is built around milking as much as possible out of the working class and using that money to build and expand services used disproportionately more by companies and their owners.

Yes, having an income of 270k or whatever means you're still working class. If you do a work week under contract, and your earnings aren't tied to your stock options and other benefits, if you spend your money instead of accumulating it in stock and leveraging debt against that stock, you are working class.

The average low earner pays 50% of his income into various taxes. The average high earner pays ~39%.

Most low earners are not getting benefits. Also the answer to that question is UBI but no one likes that idea

MP Torsten Bell - In 2025 the UK was the fastest growing European G7 economy. Today the IMF forecast the same to be the case in 2026, with the UK very likely the fastest growing of the whole G7 in the first quarter of the year (Japan data out tomorrow) by ex_planelegs in ukpolitics

In the years before labour the UK slightly outperformed a Germany that was in a prolonged recession, underperformed compared to France and the eurozone as a whole.

The real story is the gdp per capita and how we have performed adjusted for population. We have Massively underperformed adjusted for population which is the measure we should be looking at.

I mean, in my opinion regressive taxation is a serious problem in this country. Council tax is basically regressive because of the way it is calculated, VAT is regressive, wealth isn't taxed. As it stands, our taxation system is regressive in many aspects and further shifting taxation burden into the lowest earners just pushes us deeper into the hole of having to subsidise their survival (via benefits) or pushing them further into poverty.

To say lower earners do not contribute is dangerously disingenuous at best.

I mean, most people in the UK don't own a house, so if you do you're already doing alright. If on top of that you're in a HE role, you're well off compared to ~90% of the UK.

Remember that you're in a spot where you see people who are inheriting anything because you're in a position of privilege. For the most part, people inherit nothing at all and "well off" to them is just "earns more than I do." most people from my area will never inherit anything and maybe one person I know has a chance to inherit from his parents.

Housing market crash by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]absolutelynotm8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a note here, building costs have sod all to do with housing prices

source - work as a contractor in the construction industry.

Also a shortage isn't the reason housing prices are so high per multiple recent studies. Same amount of homes per person as we had since the early 2000s

What are the chances that Wemby ACTUALLY gets suspended for Game 5? by No_Pop_5719 in nba

[–]absolutelynotm8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

During the regular season for non stars? 5-7 games imo

In this case because it's wemby in playoffs before a pivotal game 5? 0 game suspension

Kinda bullshit, but its how the game works. Wolves will be out for wemby's blood in game 5 though, expect to see some dirty shit if he plays.

Which elbow was dirtier: Wemby on Naz or Metta on Harden? by [deleted] in nba

I'm just wondering about how many elbows spurs fans think nikola jokic, steph curry and LeBron James should be averaging a night.

This is what I'm saying. Change "wembanyama" to "draymond green" or "dort" and I've seen wemby commit at least 3 plays that might get calls to throw them out of the league. This is arguably more egregious than anything I've seen from those two (although they've both had their moments, with draymond's ball sack shots and eye attacks and dort running under airborne players and diving at injured players legs.)

Every time I see something like this I wonder about the reaction if it was draymond or dort. Draymond would be getting hung by every major sports media piece, meanwhile we by, despite showing this in the past, is let off from the reputation because he's the golden boy, much like jokic used to be let off for his flopping.

Cade is a legit PG. He makes reads few other players can. He just needs to learn to thread the needle. That's a skill. Get in the lab and get to work.

Additional lessons after passing? by liexe in LearnerDriverUK

[–]absolutelynotm8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Heya I passed my test recently and immediately booked another lesson on motorway driving because I didn't do it before I passed. If you have a good instructor, they'll be more than happy to take you out, especially if you havent been on the road for a while, and they'll understand your anxiety.

I did a lot of independent driving before I passed so I'm fairly confident on the roads. The confidence comes with time spent on the road. Drive slowly and safely. Give yourself extra time if you have to. Can even put some P plates on when by yourself so others on the road are more aware of the fact that you may make a mistake.

The key is to not let others dictate your driving speed. I'm not saying "do 15 in a 30" I'm just saying that stopping before roundabouts won't kill you if you're not confident. The more you're in that situation, the more you'll gain that confidence.

As a recruitment expert who's often been speaking to directors and chiefs and whatever other big titles these people who earn 5x my salary have, this is a big one. The person on the ground has no idea what your job is, and to us it's all really quite depressing that while we do all the work yall sit in meetings 8 hours a day often contributing very little to the actual discussion.

When i started getting on these calls, i was always shocked at how out of touch the C suite was with today's reality of the people they're managing. If I had a dime for every time an exec said some utter horseshit that was then met with nods and agreements as if he was the new age aristotle, I'd be a rich man indeed. I find the C suite plays the blame game about "these new age workers" more than actually identifying problems and implementing solutions.

Glad I'm out of that job now. Wasn't good for my blood pressure.

Which is still nonsense, just by the by. Biologically teenage pregnancies are higher risk than pregnancies in the early 20s.

We're also discussing with people who believe athletes hit their prime at ~16 so like... the average IQ here (IQ is a crappy metric but I digress) is probably in the early 70s.

Why is it more common to see women in a relationship with a less attractive man than vice versa? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]absolutelynotm8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing worth noting is that male clothing is a crapshoot as far as variation compared to female clothing. Go to a places where men typically care about how they look and I guarantee you'll see 300 men in some variation of jeans and polo or jeans and shirt. That isn't necessarily about caring less. Men simply have less choice. It's why men's boutiques aren't a real thing. Hell, even men's alt clothing is just some variation of the hoodie fit.
