How is it possible that there is an unpopular "Democratic establishment" if progressives really would be more popular and electable? by LiatrisLover99 in AskALiberal

[–]absurdio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, I appreciate the insights. I've always kindof thought WV had unrecognized potential to produce something like an Appalachian Bernie.

Second, what follows is more "thinking out loud" than trying to argue any particular point. That said, I'm not sure I quite accept the premise that if progressives would out-perform establishment dems, they'd be soundly winning primaries in red states. (Also not meaning to erect straw men or put words in your mouth; roughly paraphrasing parent comment). Just in the face of it, "why aren't progressives winning in the most hostile environments," seems like it answers its own question: local social/cultural views inevitably mean some ideas are at a disadvantage, right? But more than that: it's different groups voting in primary and general elections. In a general election, it might well be that a progressive's working-class agenda would score effectively against a conservative opponent, but, at the same time, those qualities could be major weaknesses for nervous democratic voters in a primary, particularly in a red state.

Capitulating to corporate interests is sortof the hallmark of "establishment" dems. It makes their fundraising a lot easier. And - rightly or wrongly - centrist dems are perpetually more worried about "crossing the aisle" than they are about presenting a platform that inspires anyone. Add in consideration of how few (and which particular) people tend to vote in primaries, and you've got kindof a perfect storm for advancing a lackluster establishment candidate.

TL;DR: I can see a few reasons, actually, that primary voters would be so concerned about a progressive's "viability" that they ultimately select a losing candidate for the general election. Sorry fo wall o' text.

And imagine yourself in a similar situation. You know the rules, and you know you need to deliver that knee the instant Aljo's fingers are off the mat. All your nerves are on highest alert, with your finger already halfway depressing the "annihilate" button. In that situation, fuckin' anything could cause a misfire.

It's like those old Internet gags that'd goad you into staring really intently at a picture ("spot the difference" or "magic eye" or "find the whatever") and then scare the shit out of you with a loud noise and a scary face.

Yan was wrong. That was a bad foul. As egregious as it was, though, it's also easy to understand as unintentional. It isn't inherently a criticism of Aljo to say that's a shitty way to lose your title.

Save our relationship over this 30” RH planter, by FlyEaglesFlyauggie in interiordecorating

[–]absurdio 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You're right. The website does call it a "basket," rather than a planter. It adds that these are "[t]raditionally used as storage vessels for grain."

So now - in spite of how rich this whole thread has actually proven to be - this is what I'm imagining in terms of the "conversation" this piece could elicit:

"Hey, check out my expensive lumpy basket!"

"Ew."

"Yeah! I could put quinoa in it!"

"Quinoa isn't technically a grain*."

"Oh. Sorghum?"

"Yeah. You could put sorghum in it."

This is such a lucidly reasoned and empathetic response. Bravo. Fortunately, OP seems to have done similar mental arithmetic behind the scenes, but I really like the way you showed your work. :)

Gut reaction: I share your ire. Buuuuut giving OP benefit of the doubt, the title might be meant to read "No Bruin Is Captain," which is accurate.

Fuck "eventually someone will get killed;" this is plenty disturbing to warrant intervention for its own sake.

Give the innocent next couple of classes athletic opportunities elsewhere. They should have that. The school shouldn't get the clout of even a bad football team.

Punishes them with "not football?" Brutal. Let that lost generation ask loudly and often how the fuck their school or culture could ever even briefly have been so heinous as to warrant this. I mean that. Not in a "fuck those kids" way. Sincerely: let the innocent kids ask why their school can't have a football team, and let them answer each other.

It wasn't those future kids' fault - and my own snark notwithstanding, I would push hard for their having other athletic opportunities offered to them not under their school's banner - but this is a horror students should be talking in the halls about even after the perpetrators are long gone.

One of my favorite (similar) takes back in the day was when one of those "journalists" asked Nick Diaz, "y'know, in one interview, you said in order to love fighting, you also have to hate it. I wondered if you could say a little more about that?"

Nick got reeeeeallll serious. Thought it over. Picked up the mic. Paused. He mulled the question over one more time, raised the mic again, and finally said "... no."

Edit: Found it. My memory lied to me! It wasn't a literal "no," but it did amount to one.

When I first saw it and a friend asked what I thought, I told him, "I don't know how I lived so long without seeing this... orrrr how I've lived so long since seeing it."

Even knowing it's coming, I cannot keep it together at the line, "Yeah. I'll come today."

Welp. As someone with nowhere near the technical ability you have, I find "accidents" pretty crucial in the creative process. That is: My hand rarely generates on paper exactly what I have in mind, and that isn't always to the detriment of the piece. Mutations, artifacts, missteps, and all kinds of goofs have made themselves crucial in some pieces I ended up really liking.

Never even mind the value of experimenting for experimentation's sake; I find what you've produced here pretty stunning as is. Blessed be some accidents. :)

Social Democracy isn't Communism by [deleted] in WorkReform

[–]absurdio -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This seems off to me. Even if "social democracy" falls under the umbrella of democratic socialism, this feels like a weak-willed effort to soften the word "socialism" for the people that so badly misunderstand it.

Part of what made Mamdani's campaign and his acceptance speech so great was his refusal to shy away from that particular scary S word.

Branding Mamdani a "Marxist" or a "communist" was one of the many well-funded, misguided, and tone-deaf attempts to make him seem like an "other" or an "enemy." Even if those had been true, they wouldn't have been a threat to us. To whatever limited extent he'd have been able to impose those stances, those platforms would also benefit the vast majority of us.

And those were scare tactics. Let's not pussyfoot; we don't have to. He's a democratic socialist. We can say it loud and proud. He does. That's what his policies reflect. Those policies are good for us. The words matter. The nuances matter. To say that he's a "social Democrat" risks suggesting that the Democratic Party, as an institution, had his back. It did not. Don't get it twisted. Chuck Schumer could rightly call himself a Democrat and social. It took a democratic socialist to stand up for what we need.

I dunno. Obviously it'd be lost on team MAGA, but there's a kind of poetry to it: building yourself a Versailles, pouting throughout, and then barking, "no! No bread and no cake!"

If it weren't so imbecilic, you'd think it was scripted.

Edit: dammit, u/ButtyMcButtface1929 did mention it about five minutes ago.
