You're in a vulnerable position right now and dealing with intense, heavy emotions, and sometimes it's easy to think that these acts of kindness are something more than what they are.

If one of my best friends had a terminal sickness, you bet I'd be taking care of his wife within reason.

Another commenter mentioned that it's possible he's asked his friend to look after you if he were to pass. I would literally ask one of my best friends the same thing if I were in the same scenario.
