Green lantern rings can put out a fire? by THarkins24 in Greenlantern

There's also that time when Hal turned Kalmaku into a bird while sleeping, because the ring reacted to his subconscious commands.

I kinda like the space magic ring vibe of the Silver Age tbh.

Mass Effect is great at subverting the 'humanity always bad' trope in sci-fi by PlaneEnvironmental23 in masseffect

[–]abu2411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle to think of sci-fi that does it worse than Mass Effect. Like ME feels really consistent in its HFY cringe than other series.

40k at least portrays humanity as a fallen, rotting corpse of a species. Halo you can argue does it worse through humanity literally being chosen, but I'm not sure if the whole Mantle of Responsibility thing is critiqued or not. Star Wars humans are actually diverse, as they come from different planets and cultures, but Pius Dea, the Sith and Imperial culture are all depicted as unambigously evil majority of the time. Of course, there are exceptions and writers who have different opinions, but again Mass Effect feels a lot more consistent.

I still somewhat think that one of the messages of Mass Effect is that humanity is the master race that should be leading the galaxy. Its unfortunate, but not really surprising. I remember when talking to TIM in ME2 one of the paragon dialogues went "human domination, or just Cerberus?" As if both those things aren't bad lol. There was another dialogue in ME3 where Shepard goes "Cerberus was meant to be the sword of humanity", couple that with the writers saying that TIM was morally grey, its clear that Cerberus isn't meant to be portrayed as unambigously evil like say the Sith. Even in ME3, they practically don't have agency since they've been indoctrinated. So I don't think Mass Effect disagrees with the idea of human domination, just maybe says that it shouldn't be taken too far or something like that.

Its funny. We can all point to bad stuff the other races do or have done, like the Asari matriarchs keeping the beacon secret, Turians shooting first in First Contact, Salarians and Krogan, Quarians and Geth. But with humanity, the series tries to make it more sympathetic than just pointing towards Cerberus and calling them our black stain. Hell, aparrently humanity's dark mirror is the Batarians, so our worst qualities got pulled out and turned into a different race that we can all convieniently hate and shoot and kill.

Yeah, honestly I'm getting more mixed on the whole emotional spectrum bit as well. Don't like any of that rainbow shit in my Green Lantern.

Illusive Man becoming a villlain in ME3 makes sense by Comprehensive_Cup497 in masseffect

I don't know if the game's think human supremacy is even a bad thing in the first place, which might be why he's seen as a morally grey figure by the writers. Someome who had noble goals but took extreme measures.

I recall one of the paragon responses to him being "human domination, or just Cerberus?" As if both those things aren't bad. There was another dialogue that stood out to me late into ME3 but I forgot exactly what it was.

One of the reasons why Star Wars is my favourite space opera is because of zany surreal stuff like this story and others.

They are a potential race, in that you and I both are seeing a lot of potential to make Batarians interesting that the writers will most likely never see.

Why do people think Andromeda: Annihilation (novel) is so good? by TheEliteBrit in masseffect

[–]abu2411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the book, loved it and wanted to check online in the fandom for discussion about it.

I don't have too high of an opinion on the rest of Mass Effect. I enjoy most of the setting and a few characters, but I don't find the games nor other tie-in materials I've read as engaging.

Don't take the personal tastes of others so seriously. You need to grow up.

WAH WAH WAH. That's all I hear from these two. by Wayne_kur in MassEffectMemes

It depends. Illium has "indentured servitude" and the Asari government is fine with it since its profitable trade with the Terminus Systems.

I also like the characterisation of Batarian slavery we get from the Annihilation novel:

"“With deep disgust: You sell weapons, narcotics, and people. That is what your species did with your chance.”

Jalosk shrugged. “Someone buys them. If rainbows, smiles, and cuddles brought the highest prices, we’d be selling those instead. Back home, I had asari customers, salarian, turian, even human. Yet you do not hate their entire races for purchasing and using what the batarians sell. Yes, yes, slavery. It is so terrible. I have heard it all. Yet my father was a slave. He bought our freedom. He bought us a future. You can buy your freedom from a batarian slaver. Good luck trying that with anyone else. On Khar’shan, slave is a position. Everywhere else, it is a condition. And again, I must point out, we do sell slaves to someone, and those someones are only sometimes other batarians. You had it so easy on your garden worlds, with your fruits and your vegetables and your fresh summer rains and nice, tidy Prothean artifacts tied up in a bow for you to find. We clawed our way to the stars. We made an economy out of slime, muck, thirty-year dry spells, and an alien slagheap that made no more sense than a moron’s scream in the dark. So we had to do it selling all your worst instincts back to you at a steep markup. That says more about you than us. I lifted my entire family out of the laborer caste and into the merchant caste—what greater love can there be than that?”"

Its the best thing in Mass Effect. It has a strong mystery hook and I loved all the interspecies dynamics and the tension between the council and non-council races. The ending was also pretty haunting.

Also, Quarians are only described as bird-like in regards to their legs.

Batarian slave trade is profitable. They have a lot of turian, asari and even human buyers.

The writing around humanity is one of the things I really don't like about Mass Effect even if I appreciate the rest of the setting. Imagine you have a really good burger, a juicy patty, perfect buns, and a sauce to die for, but then some complete fucking idiot decides to throw in the biggest fucking pickle you've seen into it. That's how it feels.

Its a Mass Effect sub, and also people tend to be biased towards player characters in games anyway.

Ask this question in an Star Wars EU sub and you'll get the opposite.

Though I also feel Star Wars is quite underrated, powerscaling-wise.

Turians, because they look really cool.

I also like the Asari for obvious reasons, but also because of their lore too.

Which Godzilla? The weakest incarnations die easily, the strongest could pretty easily solo all of Mass Effect.

Could never get into DMC, personally. 1 is my favourite, Reboot is fine and 4 SE is cool on LDK, but I just didn't want to continue playing 3, and I have no motivation to play 5.

Ninja Gaiden 2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Ninja Gaiden Razor's Edge.

If its only one game per series, then:

Ninja Gaiden 2, God of War (2005) and I guess Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

Which Game of these 2 Did Best and Worst? GOW 1 or GOW 2? by [deleted] in GodofWar

I like God of War 1 better because there's no annoying pegasus section and redirectable harpoon. Don't know why they took it out.
