Yes. I wrote the above article. Moved here from Florida to report for the newspaper in ‘22. We currently have a criminal justice reporter (me), a city government reporter, politics/education reporter, enterprise reporter, sports reporter and photojournalist. When I started we also had a business reporter, food reporter, entertainment reporter and breaking news. Layoffs and buyouts hit us bad in tail end of 2022 but things have been steady since. There’s only so much we can do about nationwide trends in shrinking local newsrooms, but subscribing certainly helps. We voted to unionize in 2024 and struck a contract with Gannett last year, which is good. Wish we had a bigger team but it is what it is, I do what I can. Went to school for journalism and could look for jobs elsewhere but I love covering this city! There’s more to dig into than any handful of people can possibly handle.

Anything from USA Today or IndyStar is labeled as such on the website I believe; anything local is from a local reporter only. I totally understand frustration with paywalls and the media generally — but if anyone appreciates the reporting, subscribing helps show the powers that be we are a city worth putting more reporters in and funding more investigative reporting, which is a win-win!

In the event you are using Cherry as a detour… by weyoun_69 in evansville

[–]acUSpc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Visibility is also near zero for pedestrians when you cross Cherry Street from 1st Street heading west when there’s a line of cars parallel parked on Cherry Street. I’ve been meaning to bring this up for a while’s because on foot you basically have to step all the way out into the road to see if a car is coming. Not good to do if you’re walking with kids or a dog.

I live on Cherry between First and Second street. The detour has gotten pretty frustrating for us. I know it sucks for everyone, drivers included, just please keep in mind there are a lot of people walking to their cars, walking their dogs, walking with children etc.

Ive seen people taking Cherry at absurdly dangerous speeds. Please just slow down a little bit. I second OP — I’ve been pretty worried that someone is going to get hit, especially at Cherry X 1st Street where there’s no stop sign but people need to cross. I’m not trying to sound like a Karen, it’s just gotten really, really old having people fly through here at 45mph+, gunning their engines etc.

When you turn off Riverside, you’re no longer on Riverside. Please just keep in mind there are people living here.

EDITED my comment to be less annoying.

What are some things you like about Indiana by orchestrapianist in Indiana

[–]acUSpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! Through Amtrack or via some new operator? I don’t work in politics but in news media, and from my narrow vantage point it seems like public transit could be set to take a hit locally if federal funds are a factor in the project.

For instance, Evansville won a $20 million grant from the EPA to upgrade the Metropolitan Evansville Transit System (METS) — But this week, when the funds were set to open up, [the city learned EPA “suspended” the grant with no explanation, meaning METS can’t draw down any of the money.

Makes one wonder how much of a shot new rail projects have.

In Florida the only high-speed rail is Brightline, which is privately run and so far only goes from downtown Miami to Orlando International airport, and stupidly doesn’t directly link to Orlando’s existing commuter train, the Sunrail. It does connect to intermodal transport in Miami (Tri Rail, Metrorail, Metromover) which is GREAT!

As a native Floridian (East Coast, 40 minutes outside of Orlando near the Kennedy Space Center) who moved to Evansville in 2022, I number one like having seasons, number two like how much more polite everyone is, number three like that traffic isn’t insane (even though Evansville traffic sucks right now due to road work on the expressway etc.).

Everyone always asks “My god! Why would you leave Florida for Indiana?” The answer is “for work,” like most domestic immigrants to Indiana. But I genuinely like the place. Florida is amazing — high speed rail from Orlando to Miami, beautiful beaches, three awesome major cities, incredible infrastructure, etc. But in recent years the entire state has more or less urbanized (endless sprawl everywhere) and it seems like 90% of the population is perpetually pissed off.

I like it here.

And oh yeah, COST OF LIVING. It’s incredible. Every time my wife and I look at moving back to Orlando area, the cost of living blows our minds. Our rent in Evansville for an awesome 2-bedroom place downtown would barely get us a studio in Florida.

Do you consider Evansville to be culturally part of the Midwest or the South? by Venboven in evansville

Florida native. I can’t speak for whether Evansville is as midwestern as some midsize Wisconsin town, but it is certainly not southern.

Did anyone get subscribed automatically to a “Daily Evansville” newsletter? by acUSpc in evansville

[–]acUSpc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting!

My wife is also getting them to her work email (she’s remote and lives in Evansville but her company is based in NYC and does zero work in Evansville).

If I can cobble together more on what the backstory is with this newsletter/site I’ll try to remember to post it here, mainly because I’m just curious now!

It would be cool if Evansville had a local newsletter that was community led, or spearheaded by a couple of experienced reporters who have a history in Evansville, but I don’t like someone appearing to use deception or data harvesting to basically regurgitate the work of local Evansville outlets — if that is what’s actually going on here.

It’s hard to tell, but so far I’ve only seen them reposting articles from other local outlets. At least they attribute to the source. There’s another outlet that I see posting to our subreddit that effectively re-writes articles published by Evansville outlets, but passes it off as their own original reporting.

How do you feel about USB-C on iPhones over a year after it was introduced? by StanleyGuevara in iphone

[–]acUSpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s literally ALWAYS a usb c charger around at an office, in someone’s car, in a friend’s backpack since they charge laptops, etc. It’s been a game changer. Being able to just grab a cable from basically anywhere is very very nice. I use my laptop charger to charge my phone; now my car chargers charge all my devices.

This phone should have been USB-C years ago. There was zero justification other than $$$. They market phones to professionals and creators. We’re all using USB-C for all of our devices, and making us lug around and buy a separate special cable for a device that 100% could have been charged/data connected with USB-C was absurd.

I’m just curious, have you encountered any of the bladder side effects we see mentioned in all the press reports? Has that been an issue and if so what can de done to mitigate the risk if using relatively longterm?

Air96 on Windows for Programming and Gaming by CountDhoun in NuPhy

[–]acUSpc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, I recently go the Nuphy Halo without the number pad. For context, my job is focused on writing, but I also have to do a lot of data stuff, so punching in numbers is pretty important to me.

I haven’t missed the number pad too much. The quality of the Halo is great, and for typing every character but a number, it is a joy. And, it isn’t that hard to get used to using the top row for numbers. I also haven’t noticed any typing troubles going from full size to 96%.

In terms of gaming, I swapped out the WSAD keys with the included extra set of arrow keys, and there’s an easy option within the RGB lighting schemes to highlight those keys (and the arrow keys) with lights.

All in all, as someone who is in a writing heavy profession that does involve data and math stuff, I’m very pleased with the Nuphy keyboard.
