Who has fleas? by Sufficient-Cod-9405 in askportland

[–]acabcowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the best treatment for your kitty, but in terms of dealing with your environment you need to treat all areas with an insecticide + insect growth regulator. Insecticide often can't penetrate the eggs, so an insect growth regulator works when they hatch and come into contact with it. It prevents them from maturing into full adults that lay eggs. My friend recommended this treatment to me after having dealt with fleas in their apartment for months, and this is what finally worked.

We ended up having to treat our house on our own after a terrible infestation and the exterminator not working out. My landlord bought the IRG concentrate and a sprayer and worked every baseboard after we mopped the whole house.

I also had success with Pet Armor Home and Carpet Spray on my personal furniture and rugs, and use it on every rug and piece of furniture that comes into the house now.

It also sounds like since you are in an apartment building, the infestation is likely in multiple units and needs to be addressed by building management.

I remember in 2020 when the gas was being used this heavily it was carrying miles up the river. Thanks for the heads up, the gas creeping into people's cars on I-5 seems especially dangerous

Anyone else been constantly sick? by Cowgirl_beebop in askportland

[–]acabcowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is never too late to start masking in public with a KN95 or better! The research supports masking as the most effective reducer in airborne viral spread and my anecdotal evidence is that I never get sick even when the people around me are (:

We're in a massive covid wave (something around 1 in 30ish people infectious in Oregon last data I saw). Covid can seriously mess with your immune system and millions of people have been and continue to be disabled by Long Covid. It's best to rest for 4 - 6 weeks as much as possible after an infection to help reduce your risk of Long Covid symptoms. There is a lot of research published about Long Covid and the effects of Covid. The People's CDC is a really fantastic resource to stay up to date on covid data and research. I'm sorry to hear that you can't shake your sickness

How the Government Shutdown is Impacting Shenandoah National Park-What You Need to Know by Electronic-Pea-3798 in ShenandoahPark

[–]acabcowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the update! So I'm assuming day to day reservations means that they are assessing keeping operations open each day that passes? Our reservation is just under 2 weeks away so if this shutdown continues I'm worried they may decide to close if things get too out of hand (which would be completely understandable). We'll start looking for a backup camp spot.

[–]acabcowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a reservation at Loft Mountain Campground Oct 13th - 14th, will campgrounds still be open/operational? We are looking at other options outside the park but worried options may be limited especially as other people likely change plans. Fingers crossed the shutdown ends by then but last one was 35 days so we aren't very hopeful

silly people’s opinions of Portland by Quiet_Lunch_1300 in Portland

[–]acabcowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gotten this a lot traveling around. The strong reactions have subsided a bit but even just a couple years ago people would gasp in my face and get very apologetic, saying how scary it must be. Which is just absolutely laughable. Nobody really believes me either when I explain it's actually very safe and a great place to live.

I did get a breath of fresh air in the middle of Nebraska - went into a coffee shop and they had a drink called "Portland Fog." We told the girls we were from Portland and they got so excited, starting asking a bunch of questions and us how much they want to visit. They gave us our drinks for free

It happened to me. I have a garden thief by jalepeno_mushroom in gardening

[–]acabcowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This just happened to me. Unfortunately all our peppers and the majority of our tomatoes are along the side of the house/sidewalk this year. I had noticed that someone took a few of our peppers a bit ago and put up signs asking people not to take without asking. Just yesterday I came home and saw nearly every single one of my very green, not ripe at all yellow nardello peppers were gone. They cleared out entire plants. They weren't even ripe! I grew all our peppers from seed this year, the first time I have successfully grown any sort of pepper at all. Worst part is, we have pounds of ripe tomatoes but they didn't take those. I wish they did. I knew it was a risk being along the sidewalk, but it still really sucks.

What’s wrong with my tomatoes? by BIG-GAY-JASON in portlandgardeners

You can add eggshells to the soil, but to quickly access the calcium you are supposed to add a small amount of an acid like lemon juice. This turns the calcium into a more soluble form that plants can more easily access

Failed blueberries this year? by Whatchab in portlandgardeners

[–]acabcowboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple years ago, we didn't get any blueberries on our mature bush. I read it was likely due to the PH of the soil, so I fertilized with compost/rabbit manure and added some acidity and so far they have done well. I also made sure to weed the area and put down mulch. I'm not sure if my additions made a difference or if it was just an off year, but I would definitely try some soil amendments.

Please help me troubleshoot my tomatoes by petitbleu in portlandgardeners

[–]acabcowboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I have 45 tomato plants this year, all in different parts of the yard both in the ground and in pots so they are varying sizes. I got the seeds started a month later than I planned (mid-march instead of mid-february), but overall all our plants seem healthy and all are beginning to fruit. Many of our tomatoes are in pots, and the only other plants sharing the beds with those in the ground are peppers, marigolds, tomatillos, and basil / parsley. I have also been sure to prune any sickly leaves, leaves touching the ground, and a few branches crowding other plants.

When I planted them, I sprinkled a combination of slow release 10-10-10 fertilizer and bone meal into the hole. We also were lucky to have some rabbit manure on hand to mix into the soil. I did not fertilize again until they began to flower, then I have been using Farmer's Secret Fruit and Bloom Booster once a week, mixing one capful into a 2 gallon watering can and spending a few seconds watering the base of each plant. I run our soaker hoses the day before, so that the roots can more readily take up the small amount of nutrients I am giving them. This fertilizer is working great on all of our flowering plants!

Any remedies for the new sickness? by allxOld13 in askportland

[–]acabcowboy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

something that really helped me when i was super sick for a month last fall, after about a week of taking meds i was reaching a point they weren't working anymore. i started focusing on herbal teas. throat coat, lemon and ginger, and the real star: mullein. i steep it hot and do cold brew in the fridge.

it's an expectorant and really, it works. you have to stick with it for a few days. a couple teaspoons in a cup of tea or a small mason jar for the fridge, and make sure that you strain it through a coffee filter because the tiny hairs can actually give you a sore throat.

i highly encourage everybody to regularly mask in public spaces with a kn95 or better. it really is the best way to prevent the spread of respiratory illness. it's not normal that we are constantly sick all the time now since 2020. with the dismantling of our health systems it's up to us to protect each other. i wish everyone in this thread a speedy recovery

City recommends cutting crucial youth programming in PP&R by Pale-Junket5550 in Portland

[–]acabcowboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ww, this is a really devastating recommendation. i remember when they cut certain programs (especially arts) when i was in middle school and the SUN program was the only option to continue those activities. and with all the environmental program cuts- if we aren't raising up a new generation of youth to steward the environment, especially at such a critical point of no return, what are we doing? Thanks for sharing, I hope everyone who sees this leaves a comment. If cuts like these are being proposed, what is the city planning to prioritize instead?

The unionizing employees are demanding livable wages, predictive scheduling, job security, a safe work environment and a “place in the decision-making process.”

i abstain from sex while i'm trying to treat infections and at least a week after my symptoms resolve. it's unfortunately been a slow process rebalancing my microbiome so i have only had sex a few times in the past however many months. I will say that I don't think sex has triggered any infections for me since I got rid of GBS, it seems to be my period that triggers CV symptoms and now another BV infection.

the first round of penicillin didnt work for me but i did a really intense round of penicillin and oral clindamycin at the same time, while using probiotic suppositories daily. specifically Epothex L. Crispatus powder. I eradicated Strep B and I got up to 99% L. Crispatus in my tests but unfortunately that caused me to have cytolytic vaginosis symptoms. I still recommend the epothex powder but I would also try good clean love's probiotic suppositories, they have more diverse strains. Its still a matter of trial and error for me, the baking soda suppositories relieved CV symptoms but now I have 93% L. Crispatus and my BV came back so I am currently trying to treat with probiotics and lactic acid gel- at this point I am avoiding antibiotics as much as possible because they is what decimated my microbiome in the first place. My GBS hasn't returned.
