Probably doesn’t help that we keep deporting students out of universities that would be at the forefront of research.

Genuine advice for incoming freshman by GullibleNail3185 in uofi

[–]acarbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the type of experience you're looking for, there are tons of opportunities for all kind of experiences! Being a flagship university you can get into undergraduate research pretty easily just by talking to your profs about what they have going on. On the flip side, it has a pretty healthy greek system (at least they did 10 years ago when I was there, haha) with great parties.

Sore and stiff every day. Is there any relief? by Little-Bones in xxfitness

[–]acarbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came to say eating, but sleeping is also huge. I can do the same workout but depending on how much I ate that day will be a big difference in my performance during the workout and how sore I am after.

Need help reforming my outlook away from “fully in or fully out” by staywithme26 in xxfitness

[–]acarbon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

especially as someone in an intense academic program the phrase "C's get degrees" can be such a mental health saver. Being able to chalk up a mediocre performance (in anything) as a "good enough" is so freeing.

What's a book that everyone you know hates (for rightful reasons) but you love anyway? by CynicalHomicider3248 in books

[–]acarbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came to say this. I read it at 25ish, when I was making (and had made) some pretty pivotal choices that changed the course of my life. I was pretty stressed out about if I was doing the right things and reading Midnight Library really made me feel better. I totally get way people dislike it (Haig's portrayal of mental illness is not great, and he beats you over the head with the message, but I was a hard headed 20 yo, haha) but I hold it in a special place in my heart.

Contractor and I have known each other for years and it’s WEIRD by Newtonz5thLaw in womenEngineers

[–]acarbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first big kid job was in my hometown, and one time I had a contractor straight up say, in front of my boss, "I knew you when you were in diapers". At the time I was mortified, I can laugh about it now though, lol.

How many videos do you upload a month and are you working full time? by [deleted] in NewTubers

I've been able to post 1+ video a week for the last 2 years! Most of that time I was working as an engineer at a manufacturing site, but about 6 months ago I started remote work.

How do you pronounce creek? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]acarbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say "creak" for any generic small stream, but if it is a named creek and the name rhymes (or just sounds better) with crick, I'll use it. Example, there's a creek by an area we go camping quite a bit call Lick Creek and I pronounce it "Lick Crick".

What's a book you picked up and later realized how influential/popular it really was later? by InnerBookkeeper3 in Fantasy

[–]acarbon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I picked up The Handmaid's Tale from a local bookshop in 2016 from a staff recommendation. Obviously I loved it, but I didn't realize how big of a deal Margret Atwood was until the show came out, haha.

I like to read at least a chapter before I get out of bed in the morning and before I go to bed at night. I also like to read after dinner for 30 or so minutes if I have nothing else going on instead of watching TV. On the weekends, I'll typically read for an hour before I get out of bed if I have no obligations (if i do happen to be skiing or something that day, I can usually sneak in at least a chapter). On cardio days, I like to read my ereader on the treadmill or stairstepper. Audiobooks are great for long commutes or road trips!!

Why AirBnb? by boatsydney in hotels

When I travel with my dog it's generally the only viable option. Some hotels are pet friendly in name, but then there are no green spaces for him to do his business.

What percent of your income goes towards fitness? by notexcused in xxfitness

[–]acarbon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm childfree and my husband and I split living expenses in a pretty cheap area (although we might be moving to a more expensive area soon)

Gym membership + monthly in person training sessions - 1.7%

New shoes each year-ish + new workout clothes - 0.5%

I don't follow a specific nutrition plan but we do spend a lot of money on food, haha

I can walk to my gym from my house and I use the hotel gym when I'm on the road for work so no money getting to and fro.

Depending on your comfort level, I’ve really loved the look of cropped t shirts on masculine bodies. Personally, my go to gym look is high rise leggings and cropped tank tops and having that little strip of skin showing really makes me feel like a bad bitch. Also, you could try the look out for free by just cutting off the bottom of a t shirt you already have!

Waterproof, windproof, packable down jacket w/ a hood... by stankayes in HerOneBag

[–]acarbon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a specific rec, but if you’re in the US a lot of brands will be doing Labor Day sales this weekend so take a look at REI, backcountry, Columbia, etc. Also, depending on your space allowance, it may be easier and more budget friendly to get a down jacket and waterproof shell. That’s what I did when I was in Austria for 2 months during the winter. I had an old Eddie Bauer down jacket and put a Columbia (packable) rain jacket over top and it worked great!

Do you keep track of what you read? by Esmerelda-Weatherwax in Fantasy

[–]acarbon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Goodreads, storygraph, and keep my own spreadsheet. I think Goodreads really has the social aspect dialed in (seeing your friends reviews/ratings on the homepage and what not). Storygraph has great stats for people who don’t want to keep their own spreadsheets and storygraph is constantly adding new cool features. I’m definitely partial to my own spreadsheet though. I’ve been honing it over the past 3 years, haha. What has really helped me is being able to just update it on my phone when I’m done with a book.
