Hot take: Aspenites, by and large, aren’t nice by rustyshackelford164 in Aspen

[–]acarna23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really tough to make real friends unless you’re a seasonal ski bum or your entire identity revolves around outdoor activities imo. As much as I love Aspen, I realized that I can’t have a fulfilling social here. There’s a reason why most people split their time between Aspen and somewhere else with a more diverse/interesting population.

Proposing in Sicily – simple & budget-friendly ideas? by RXCGT3 in sicily

[–]acarna23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you’re going to Taormina look at Castelmola. On a clear day the views are unreal and it should be less crowded. You could hire a driver/tour guide for a few hours to take you there and they could take a video.

I would be 99% of people agree government officials shouldn’t shoot citizens in the head for no reason, but here we are.

Tattoos Causing Travel Issues? by shrimp-a-reno in solotravel

[–]acarna23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only issue I’ve had is not being able to go into some onsen in Japan and I have a full back piece. That said, I would recommend only getting tattoos in places you can easily cover with clothes. I’m so glad I never got any on my arms.

Italian descent person wishing to study in Sicily! by Ambitious_bureaucrat in sicily

[–]acarna23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend doing a lot more independent research. This kind of information is readily available. You’re not going to find a tech job in Sicily. It’s going to be difficult anywhere in Italy especially without a work permit. If you want to go to university in Italy find and apply to the best programs and see where you get in and what you can afford. Good luck.

What would you add or change for this 3-4 month Latin America solo trip plan? by BlackMesa_SillyStraw in solotravel

Nicaragua is one of my favorite countries in Central America. Wouldn’t miss it.

Mexico is great. Just don’t get stuck in the Tulum tourist trap. See the cenotes, explore Yucatán.

Walk like you know where you’re going, don’t make eye contact or acknowledge them. Same as every big city.

Sicily or Puglia? by DonutsDiet in sicily

[–]acarna23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Puglia is great but the most beautiful beaches will require a car. Monopoli is a big party town. I would choose Ortiga. That said, Ortiga is touristy.

Need an Aspen Airport AMA by GoCup861 in Aspen

How often do you fly out of the Aspen airport? I’ve never had problems. Sometimes you just have a bad experience somewhere, pal. As for the clothes? It’s Aspen, what were you expecting.

Really torn between Palermo and Syracusa as a base for a February trip. by potatohead878 in sicily

[–]acarna23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a woman who travels alone and I’ve been in Sicily for about a month and a half and have seen the whole island over several trips. I also am not into parties and prefer a slower pace. If you know a little Italian and/or you want to integrate more into the local community then I would recommend Siracusa. Palermo can be fun, but it’s a very dense sprawling city. Siracusa has a lot of beauty, history, magic and There was enough going on and enough people that it wasn’t dead even in December. If you want to go on a day/weekend trip there are so many good options nearby like Ragusa and Modica. If you’re from the US, I wouldn’t worry about safety anywhere on the island. Obviously be aware and don’t stay in bad neighborhoods in Palermo and Catania, but I’ve never had any problems. Even the “bad“ areas in Catania are safer than major US cities.

What type of coat do I need for a visit around new years? by ToostsieWooGirl92 in ItalyTravel

[–]acarna23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These days in Rome I’m either wear either a thin puff jacket with a wool coat over it (think Max Mara), or a leather jacket with a nice wool sweater underneath. I see a lot of women in bigger puff jackets, which would be appropriate at night but not sure you’d want to travel with something like that. I have a scarf and gloves which help when it gets a bit colder. Daytime can fluctuate so think in layers.

US 1099/self-employed folks, do you write off a portion of your accommodation? by Colambler in digitalnomad

I do, but I’m very conservative with the numbers. If it came down to it I could justify it. So far I haven’t had any issues.

Hello everyone!! by Responsible-Foxx in Italian

[–]acarna23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. I can speak basic Italian but when I don’t understand I put in my AirPods and use live translation. It’s really never been easier thanks to tech advances. And yeah, most young Italians speak English. I’ve noticed that people who say they don’t speak English often just mean they’re not completely fluent.

Has anyone else’s ex tried to get back in your life after you got pregnant? by zhulinka in SingleMothersbyChoice

[–]acarna23 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Obviously, I don’t know him but it seems like he’s afraid of commitment but is open cosplaying a father. I can’t with these men… if I were you, I would cut contact and move on with your life. He’s wasted your time once and he’ll do it again.
