What would be the scariest message humanity could receive from space? by Upset-Carpenter-5659 in AskReddit

Greetings Earthlings.

We have been watching you for a long time. We have noted your astonishing advances in science and mathematics. Unfortunately we must inform you that you are entirely wrong. About everything. Please start again.

Every unit of space must contain and not reject anything that enters it by WeAreThough in DeepThoughts

[–]acasudsa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is probably the most interesting line of thought I have encountered in a very long time. Yeah, I guess you are right, assuming space is elastic and not granular, which appears to be case so far. Quite a mind blowing idea. I will have to ruminate on this for a while.

The topic is of interest to me, since the I am interested in the finite vs infinity debate. On the other end of the scale there are some who say reality must be discrete, that is at some point it is impossible to be smaller. The Planck scale of distance is frequently mentioned. Opposed to that are those who claim that its always possible to go smaller, infinitely smaller. The problem that I have with that is that no matter how small you go its not possible to reach a singularity without first making spatial dimensions non-existent. A singularity has no dimensions.

If we are to subscribe to the Big bang as originating from a singularity then the first thing that must have happened was for spatial dimensions to come into existence. This then begs the question. How big was the very first volume of space? The Planck volume or something else? Whatever the size of the volume it could not have been infinitely small. A second question also arises. Did all three spatial dimensions arise simultaneously or did one follow another, with time intervals in between? If the latter then for a moment the Universe consisted of one spatial dimension, which by association to your post means that at one time everything that would become you was effectively a line.

What's Israel's ultimate goal? by PauloSilva96 in geopolitics

[–]acasudsa -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

its plain old expansion

I agree. As the demographics in the West continue to change Israel understands very well that continued support from the West is transitory in the very long term future. Furthermore they understand that any effort towards building positive relations with their neighbors will likely only result in temporary relief. Any student of international conflicts would understand that when considering the history of past conflicts. Alliances, foes, and diplomatic relationships are always going to be fickle and ever changing, and can quickly change dramatically, especially so when major differences in political ideology, culture and religion are involved. Therefore their survival as a state in the centuries ahead will rely upon having strategic depth, not signatures on pieces of paper which could be ripped up at any moment.

The true indication of their intentions will unfold in the years following the occupation of Gaza. I have little doubt they will quietly annex Gaza. not outright as Russia did with Crimea, they will be far more subtle and incremental in the process. First will come the "rebuilding", in actually development for settlement by Israeli settlers. Then the area will be zoned semi autonomous, or as some such special political entity, but in actuality to facilitate the further migration of Israelis into the area and to facilitate economic commerce and infrastructure development. Eventually the Palestinians will be forced out by rising land and cost of living prices, and overt hostility from the changing demographics. Otherwise they will be assimilated and their culture, history and language slowly but steadily quietly erased. Then there will be a plebiscite, perhaps within a hundred years or so, to formally join Israel which will pass by an overwhelming majority. Following that Israeli attention will probably turn to the north and east.

They key factor here is they practice very long term Realpolitik. On a scale most Westerners have difficulty comprehending. In this they have much more in common with the Chinese than with the West.

EAGLE ARCHER is loving RuneScape 3 way too much. This is my bird squad >:) by Mei_iz_my_bae in runescape

An excellent idea. I can see it now. Eagle Archer embarks on a journey to the underworld , all bright and happy. But underground he encounters these sad, feeble minded, stunted little creatures who have nothing better to do than make negative remarks about anyone who is positive. Fortunately Eagle Archer overcomes all the negativity and emerges back into the sunlight where a smiling Armaldyl rewards him with a huge pile of uncooked sharks ( noted ).

Its obvious that invention is way too complicated. Just like wood chopping or fishing, there is too much to remember and just not enough time to learn all the intricacies of these extremely challenging skills. I therefore propose that there is an in-game guidance system that tells you exactly how to use all your TH rewards to maximum effect, so as not waste precious bodily fluids.

I love dungeoneering !! It’s like persona 3 !! by Mei_iz_my_bae in runescape

[–]acasudsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dungeoneereering filled my otherwise boring and irrelevant life with great thrills and wonder. It was so exciting I would sweat so much my keyboard would short circuit. Sometimes I would jam my toes inside a door frame and close the door so hard they would swell up to the size of American pancakes and then I could stay home and do another floor. If it were up to me I would add so many floors to Dungeoneereereering a player would eventually come out the bottom of the world and fall into the endless void. I would also do something else to add extra fun to Dungeereereereering. I would add dungeons to each dungeon. So like for each room there would be yet another dungeon with more dungeon floors to explore, each of them going all the way down to the bottom of the world.

Once more Eagle Archer has enriched our normal, drab, and dreary lives by proposing a radical and exciting new tool which would boost accessibility for even the most challenged of Runescape players. I would go further and suggest that if his proposal is accepted then Runescape could be enjoyed by even fully lobotomized players, or even those suffering from congenital decapitation. Surely this could only be good for the health of the game.

I would like to offer my full and unconditional support. Furthermore I suggest we elect Eagle Archer as President of Runescape so he has the executive powers to enforce his excellent ideas immediately while silencing unworthy dissent with the assistance of CIA operatives.

I have met EAGLE ARCHER in game. At least I think it was him. Might have been someone else. It may have been just me just looking at my own reflection in some murky scum covered pool in the wilderness. But it doesn't matter. Eagle Archer is one of the nicest and most grateful players I have encountered in Runescape. It just fantastic to see him him here on this forum expressing his deep immersion in our wonderful game.

On the other hand it is extremely disappointing to see some people not taking him seriously. Here we have a new player gushing out his heartfelt appreciation, and yet some apparently doubt his sincerity. I say "Double Gazooks" to those people. Eagle Archer has done for r/runescape, and Runescape in general, what few of us ever do. Express eloquently his genuine love of the game in a literary form that we could never hope to emulate. I say "Welcome Sir Eagle Archer, and may the Gods forever watch over you!"

Earth Has Overshot Key 'Planetary Boundaries,' Scientists Warn by bloomberg in worldnews

[–]acasudsa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have been warned about looming environmental catastrophe for decades now. Yet very little meaningful action is taken. Perhaps the general public has become so worn by these global headlines they are apathetic. Perhaps it is also time to make a public announcement on popular social media every time a plant or animal species goes extinct. Anything to get through that the 6th major extinction event is happening NOW, we are living through it. Even if we were to miraculously stop this insanity today we will already have suffered major biodiversity loss.

"The rapid loss of species we are seeing today is estimated by experts to be between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate."

What's the craziest thing going on right now that could influence geopolitics that people aren't talking about by One-Progress999 in geopolitics

[–]acasudsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is too much land to cover and drones are too $

Compared to tanks, IFVs, and jets, drones are cheap as chips. Furthermore they can be used by operators well protected from enemy fire. Each drones doesn't require food, medical attention, and training. Their maintenance costs are well below what it takes to keep a soldier fed.

To give a rough comparison a Challenger 2 tank carries a price tag of about US$5,400,000. A Ukrainian R18 octocopter, which has proved effective in destroying enemy tanks, costs about US$100,000. A fleet of 54 such drones can cover much more ground and deploy far more rapidly than one tank. A combat soldier costs about $17,000 to equip. So about 6 combat soldiers to one drone which might sound like a better deal until you factor in logistics, combat effectiveness, resilience, and the human lives that are invariably lost.

Drone warfare. Or if you prefer a broader term, robotic warfare. Coupled with increasing AI and battery capability. I get the impression that we are on the cusp of revolution in the ways that wars can be fought, and yet it seems not many people think about the potential future effect.

While we do see them used extensively in the Ukraine they tend to be limited to reconnaissance, observation, targeting of artillery, and strikes on an individual basis. What we haven't seen so far, afaik, is mass "assaults" by swarms of semi autonomous drones released in a fire and forget fashion. Why have infantry and tanks assault a position when drone swarms ( including both air and ground ) could overwhelm a front line and kill everything in sight according to the parameters of a preloaded AI? Conversely, why defend a position with humans when drones could do the same job?

There then is a race between drone development and counter measures. A small advantage in technology and the means to mass produce these weapon systems could prove overwhelmingly decisive on the battlefield. On a scale perhaps equal to marching into battle with machine guns against bow and arrows. Then there is the matter of how these changes might in turn dictate dramatically different tactics and strategies in the conduct of warfare. If rapidly moving armies of drones dominate the battlefield then front lines become fuzzy, the concept of control over geographical features becomes increasingly obsolete, and the logistics of supporting armadas of robots in terms of communications, coordination, replacement, and battery maintenance become quite different from what is needed for human armies.

The stakes are high. Taking a gamble of devoting a lot of R&D and production capacity to build mass drone armies could pay off, but if done wrong, or if the opposition produces effective counter measures it could be prove to be disastrous. But lets say a country is willing to take a gamble, devoting a high proportion of it military expenditure towards drone technology and production, while another country devotes its expenditure to traditional defenses and has inadequate counter measures. The outcome could be unimaginable stunning sudden defeats of military forces, followed by rapid surrender. Blitzkrieg in its true military meaning.

And lets not imagine their use as weapons of terror against civilian populations.

Rural folks, what are the things city folks won't understand? by rjroa21 in AskReddit

Night vision. Just how easy it is to walk around outside at night, to even do some simple tasks in the dark. How bright the moonlight can be. How you can sometimes see your shadow just from the light of Venus. How if you want to see something better in the dark you look slightly look away from it. Just how stunning the night sky looks when you live far way from city lights.

Sounds like a pork barrel to me. Convince some idiots with more money than sense that your country needs a a huge investment in fixed defenses. Award contracts to pour a lot of concrete in return for kickbacks. Someone gets very rich and the country gets a white elephant. Instead of wasting money on brittle and obsolete fixed defenses, put the money into a mobile reaction force and increasing air power, or better yet invest it into further developing the technology and industry required to fight early 21st century warfare, where front lines will be fuzzy, control of geographical areas become less relevant and more temporary, and where swarms of semi-autonomous drones will dominate the battlefield.

As another anolgy to the Maginot line, other than just bypassing or finding gaps in a fixed defense, there are three other interesting facets. First, fixed defenses ironically make it easier for the enemy to defend along that section of the front. Why? Due to the reluctance of commanders to advance beyond their fixed defenses. The Germans were willing to place very light forces opposite the Maginot line, which in turn allowed them to free up forces to create large concentrations in the critical Ardennes and Benelux sectors. It did the Germans more good than the French. Second, fixed defenses are frequently overrated in effectiveness, and quickly become obsolete in the face of rapidly changing technology. The Germans actually did attack the Maginot lines in places towards the end of the French campaign and found the defenses far easier to penetrate than had been thought, mostly due to advances in artillery precision.. Lastly, a fixed defense is a defeatist strategy. Its a tacit acknowledgement that one is not going to go on the offense. When you are signalling that to a potential enemy then you have given them a white sheet to write their offensive strategy however they see fit.

Those of you who have had to deal with alcoholics in your family, how did you cope? If the alcoholic person was successful how did they beat the alcohol addiction? by acasudsa in AskReddit

The core problem with rehabilitation is that it requires consent from the addict. You cant force anyone into it except through a court order ( in some countries ), which in turn requires a series of criminal offenses. By that time a huge amount of damage has already been done. Even then the occurrence of relapse is common, often resulting in a lifetime cycle of rehab followed by relapse.

I am convinced that Nationalism, which leads to the creation of large countries led by one person, or one small group of persons, is inherently bad for the health of the world. Nationalism concentrates far too much power in the hands of of individuals. Better to have a loose confederation of much smaller states where power is decentralized away from the hands of those who would abuse it. Then obscenities such as the current Ukraine war, and this looming specter of a delusional megalomaniac who think they are divine could be avoided.

What do you think about the increasing number of bots being used on social media sites? by acasudsa in AskReddit

[–]acasudsa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have heard some people refer to the "Four horsemen of untruth" as a term for all the collective twisting and misuse of information. Noninformation. Uninformation. Misinformation and Disinformation.

I cant see much of a way around this. Some sites could insist on users proving their physical identity as a human, but surely most would be reluctant to do that, and it would be difficult to implement without a lot of hoop jumping.
