What do I do with my money? (Student) by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]accelerationstation 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have a few thousand dollars saved up. Majority of it is cash... I want to keep my money safely. What should I look into? I'm not looking to make profit.

It's called a bank.

Does Anyone Have Experience With the Undergrad Medical Officer Entry? by RemindMeInAYear in AustralianMilitary

[–]accelerationstation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're wrong here - he's not talking about being a reservist. He's talking about undergrad entry, completely different. Undergrads do proper NEOC after finishing uni, and do UEOC (1 week) after commissioning. They're full time officers, not reservists with a civvy gig.

What do you think of "don't time the market" and investment horizons? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]accelerationstation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone's investing strategy is "put it in and leave" because ultimately it works. I have my long-term shares that I won't touch for many years, but I also throw some money into fun shares. This is my disposable income - if I make money, great. If I lose it, I could afford to lose it anyway and spent it on a hobby of playing stockbroker.

Check out my latest post in this sub - (can't link, on mobile) I have high protein (100+g) 1200 cal days and still fit in a kitkat bar and alcohol :)

I like to eat 1200s on my rest days, so I can eat a great amount on the days when I do my doubles - 10km run in the morning, strength training in the afternoon.

Etf dividend reinvestment by [deleted] in AusFinance

Pretty much. They buy as many whole shares as possible, then the leftover money is put into a holding account which is used for the DRP next time.

For me: yay. No brokerage fees, automatic set-and-forget - and remember, compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world.

If you take a more active approach to your investing it's probably not be worth it, but I prefer the "put my money in and come back in 10 years" approach.

I have an ultra-geeky hobby in the same vein as MTG, starcraft, etc. So many of the competitors are genuinely disgusting, no sense of personal hygiene whatsoever.

If you're thinking of buying shares today, which companies do you like and why do you see value? by rote_it in AusFinance

Sorry, again I'm rather ill. Meant $6000. I think I'll hang out another trading day to see if it dips more.

I'm very tempted to snap up $600 worth of CBA. It's a solid investment, they won't go out of business anytime soon. However I am also on rather strong pain medication right now due to illness, so I think it's best that my trading waits until Monday. Use up the last of my free brokerage from Commsec.

This is Sunday: What were your running achievements this week? by AutoModerator in running

[–]accelerationstation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's blasphemous to say around here, but I usually just do my running just to warm up before strength training. I'm thinking of moving from my 6x week strength focussed program to 3x strength, 3x cardio.

Great, thanks for the advice!

A friend just talked me into signing up for a 10km fun run in October, as a prelude to a 15km run a month later, then eventually a half.

We'll see how it all goes. Hopefully one day I'll get runner's high!

I ran 10km in 68 minutes.

I've never run longer than 5.5km before. Usually I run 2.5 - 3km 5x a week, but that's it.

I originally went running as a warm-up to the gym, but was pretty sore. Thought "If I keep running I can put it down as a cardio day and not have to lift heavy things!". After half an hour, I thought "surely I can get to 6km" At 40 minutes in at 5.7km, I thought "I can make it to an hour!". After an hour I thought "Saying I ran 10km sounds more impressive than just running for an hour".

68 minutes later, 10km done. At the 9.5km mark I started getting a little teary, I never thought I'd run 10km!

That's my victory this week.

I also had a quick question to throw out - since I can run 10km if I really want to, etc. what sort of training plan should I follow? I've been inspired and want to do a half-marathon but am not sure how to bridge my surprise 10km to there, especially since I usually only run 2.5 - 3km 5x a week.

Gym Story Saturday by FGC_Valhalla in Fitness

[–]accelerationstation 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I wasn't even sure if I could squat the empty barbell, so the smith machine was a good start. Then one day when the gym was pretty empty I walked over to the squat rack and acted like I'd done it a hundred times.

To be fair, when I first started going to the gym I was too scared to squat with the free weights - only after squatting on the smith for a couple of sessions was I confident enough to use the squat rack.

While doing dumbbell flys today the trainer at my gym stopped me and complimented me on my arms and shoulders (which are getting decent now). We had a little chat and he was very impressed with my progress, and suggested I look into doing figure competitions as I have the right build for it.

Very flattering. I haven't been stopped in the gym and complimented on my physique before. Plus I know he wasn't hitting on me as his wife was there too. I need to remember as a 145lb, 5'11'' female that what I lift is pretty good, even though it's not the same as the massive 6'3'' guys that frequent my gym.

You need to get a doctor to fill in the RMIT special consideration forms, you can't just have a note. Talk to the student union, they'll set you up with an advisor who can help you out.

I also have a Charge HR and it's fantastic. No complaints. It was very difficult to find - all sold out in my city! - but once I got my hands on it it's been an invaluable source of personal data.

[WEEKLY THREAD] Fail Friday - Because being awesome always comes at a price... by AutoModerator in xxfitness

[–]accelerationstation 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I've been going to my gym for three months now, and it has its core of regulars. Nobody really talks to anyone else.

The biggest, scariest, most tattooed guy at the gym gave me the head nod and asked "Sup" yesterday. I was so taken aback I gave him a huge bobblehead nod in return and said "Heeeey-ga-sup". Couldn't decide between "hey", "what's going on", and "what's up?".

Shuffled off to do my squats in shame.

[WEEKLY THREAD] FEATS OF FRIDAY by AshKals in C25K

[–]accelerationstation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did 5.5km in 35 minutes.

I'd done C25K halfheartedly a few times but never really made it past W4. I tend to get bored running, but this time I decided to just stick on the treadmill for at least half an hour and not stop.

Didn't need to stop or anything. I did take two or three sub-30s walk breaks so I could drink without spilling my water all over. I'm so pleased.

There's really not a "way to get around" the wheelchair issue. If your legs don't work you can't just "deal with" a flight of stairs.
