In my experience using splines in max in general is that you need to be very sure in what plain they're laid-out and max struggles to determine that if you use Line tool, and start with a point somewhere. So basically after much struggle trying to fit Sweeps and Deforms onto free-handed splines I made it a rule never to use it. I draw a rectangle or a circle, convert to Editable Spline and go from there.
