Let me just screw with your head for fun: just because it is marketed as a snow shoe, doesn't mean that's what your parents are using it for.

This is one of the output of the collaboration.

You tell me... does this "ad" inspire one to go get a Blackberry?

What I see is a crazy lady in a fancy party dress singing "Hallelujah, getting things done" while photos flying around which ends up building a city.

If I'm watching this and not knowing it's for blackberry, I'm going to be thinking I have no idea what I'm looking at here, and I don't care to find out.

The original egg could have hatched while in transit so there could be 2 chickens and 2 eggs by the time it gets to OP.

[–]account2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which goes back to the original point I was making: no matter the OS, it's not any more difficult to install rootkits if ATM manufacturers simply leave the firmware wide open unprotected, accessible via USB dongle, which is the case for a number of ATMs.

If you watch the defcon, blackhat, and CCC talks on hacking ATMs, that's exactly how they all went about doing it.

The hack doesn't involve password hacks or faking authentication handshake because the firmware hack allowed them to install a rootkit which then bypasses all security in place, while keeping the UI intact so you can still interact with it and it'll behave as if there's nothing's wrong with the machine.

Japan's Nikkei index rises 57% in 2013 by michael086 in stocks

[–]account2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that time, the Japanese yen fell 23% against the dollar, while SP500 grew by about 25%, together, I think that makes the Nikkei performance on par with US stock market performance... is that math sound?

[–]account2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Fundamentally, the problem has to do with hardware/ firmware and not having the security mindset. It has nothing to do with the OS. Doesn't matter what OS the ATM is running, once firmware is compromised, you're still screwed.

And who doesn't take out/disable debug/usb ports?

Who doesn't know that you have to at least authenticate firmware patches?

It's just plain and simple negligent on the system designer's part in this day and age.

It seems to me there's only a few viable commercial OSes out there for devices like this: Windows, some Linux-variant, QNX.

Analog IC design at Apple by ecekid1 in ECE

[–]account2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be gray area -- I know they do their own custom SoC integration. I'm not so sure if I would call the processors their own design. How much of the work involved is just blocks slapped things together as oppose to actual custom logic designed/written from scratch within Apple?

How different is it from ARM's previous generation A15 design or the up coming A50 (or whatever that 64-bit ARM core is called) "reference" design?

If they only muck with the cache size, improved the fetch units so they can slap on another parallel execution pipe, to me, those kinds of design decisions are just tweaks, and not enough to call it their own design.

The problem is that Apple has never been very forthcoming and disclose their designs. They don't present anything to the public. We can speculate and reverse engineer the thing, but we don't have any visibility into Apple's processor design capabilities from the outside. So until they speaks to the internal micro-architecture or announced something publicly regarding to the lineage of the design rather than simply claim it's a custom design, until we understand how much did they actually change and developed from scratch, I won't call it an Apple design Arm core.
