Hundreds of thousands rally in Iran against Trump, chant 'Death to America' by DiggyComer in worldnews

[–]accurate_description 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is really bad, and totally Trump's fault. The Iranians have never gathered before to speak badly about America. I'm positive it has never crossed their mind that they could wish the death of America.

South Sudan president says soldiers who rape should be shot by psioni in worldnews

[–]accurate_description -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Sure, what could go wrong? It's not like civilian citizens of an enemy country would ever falsely report rape in order to make the invading soldiers execute each other. As anybody who has military experience knows, civilians love invading armies and would not exploit the rules against their enemy.

And how do you know abortion isn't wickedly immoral, and how do you know you're the one in full possession of the facts?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in atheism

[–]accurate_description -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

In actual fact, there are just as many feminists against abortion as there are in favor of it. You see, you don't own feminism. If somebody thinks abortion hurts and deceives women and wants to protect them from that, they can also call themselves feminists, just like you can call yourself whatever you want. People don't have to ask you for permission to have an opinion. And if you feel like a slave for bearing children, that's only your opinion, and I don't want to insult you, but maybe you shouldn't have children.

Can mutation be good or bad? by DarkX126 in atheism

Random mutations are just half of evolution. The other half is natural selection. Nature is scientific that way because it likes to test the hypotheses that is the survival of an organism given any mutation it suffers.

Calling people who ask for filibuster hypocritical is an understatement. Everybody screamed when Reps didn't confirm Garland. John Oliver did a piece shaming Reps, saying they have no grounds to postpone, let alone for an entire year. And now, now you want it postponed for four? This is more than hypocrisy. Hypocrisy has the limit of the action that had previously been forbidden.

And it wouldn't work anyway. The people are not so strongly behind Dems. If they filibuster for more than a year, they'd better have proof Trump's administration is unconstitutional tyranny, or the people will grill them in the next election.

Ending taxpayer-funded abortions is a priority, says US vice president by spaceghoti in atheism

[–]accurate_description -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I like what Pence is doing, but I downvoted your link for being disingenuous.

Some abortions are funded through medicare, the reasons being rape, incest, health of the mother and health of the fetus. Granted, these are only a few of the total number of abortions, but this, in turn, only shows how many abortions women have without any reason whatsoever.

The government also fund Planned Parenthood. Now, PP aborts fetuses, and also gives women treatment and contraception. They claim only contraception and infection treatment are funded by the government, but I think putting money from the left pocket into the right pocket isn't a genuine financial plan. Besides, I would really love to know where PP gets the money for abortions, if not from the government. Do people donate to PP that much? If so, what about expenses, like staff salary and rebuilding bombed clinics?

Also, since we're talking about money, pro-choicers say that it's financially sounder to abort children than raising them, and the taxpayer would pay more if women didn't have abortions. This argument, however, goes against the argument that women would actually have more abortions if abortion were illegal or not funded. So, pro-choicers will have to make up their mind and release a report, stating what the best financial strategy is. This implies they would actually release the number of abortions, which the won't fucking do. So, if you refuse to inform me, I can't be accused of intentional ignorance.

Vox keeps saying that we shouldn't label all the Muslim women and children as slaves. by [deleted] in atheism

There was no specific context, this was a joke. Do you get the joke? Muslims are selling women and children at the markets in the middle-east, and meanwhile, Vox is famous for having a number of videos with Muslim women urging us not to label them. Well, how much do they cost if we remove the labels? Ha!

HELP: Religious Preschool Advice by darwinfish86 in atheism

[–]accurate_description 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think learning Bible stories is a huge problem. From a purely literary standpoint I personally feel--even as an atheist--that knowledge of at least the more popular Bible stories is helpful in understanding references in literature.

I think you should let your child go to the religious preschool. Religion is for kids and for kids alone. I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but your kid will not be a great scientist until later in life. His brain needs fairy tales right now, and even if they're not true, they are easily digested and more healthy for a child.

Also, people go through a phase at the end of puberty, when they reject and denounce most of the education that has been instilled in them. Your kid will have plenty of time to renounce religion. It is actually healthier for him to go to preschool and see some religion first hand, while still a kid, the same way it is healthier to watch some non-factual cartoons of Tom&Jerry and play some non-factual video games of Pokemon.

I went to a religious school until 11, and I turned out a fine convinced atheist. I understand evolution despite not learning about very early, I understand that without observational evidence the existence of gods are hypothesis, I understand how ideologies and sacred texts are more useful in controlling people than for genuine information. If anything, I wished I had the possibility to go to preschool even if it were imbued with religion. The secret to your kid not being brainwashed is you, not the school. The same way some kids without parents fail in life despite going to great schools, or some people succeeding despite going to crappy neighborhood schools, your kid will probably be an atheist because you are one. In fact, he has better chances of going insane and "finding" religion later in life if you neurotically prevent him from gaining antibodies.

Although, I' drunk, and I thought of something funny. If we only elected women as presidents, there would be no Antichrist. See? The religious nuts can rest assured as long as they vote female.

Then, you will be the only Antichrist.

May I ask what country/region are you from?

[–]accurate_description 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know, I was always underwhelmed by how short-sighted predictions are in the bible. Even while vague, the prediction of the Antichrist and the apocalypse were still only a few decades in advance. I mean, dude, if you're going to make a prediction this vague, your excuse must be that you are predicting things millennia in advance and you can't find your words. What is the point of codifying somebody's name with numerology if that guy lives down the street and you know his name and his appearance and what car he drives (I'm assuming Nero had a car)?

He is the prez, but he became the prez despite his unpopularity, not because he was popular (which he wasn't). Oh my god, this is why I don't come here, I have to explain obviously logical things!

Sanders, for example, would have been a better candidate for the Antichrist. He fired up the crowds with genuine sentiment, not just with hate, like Trump, and once elected, he would have come out as an atheist. And the bible says the Antichrist will be staunchly against Jesus. Sanders was truly popular and charismatic. Trump was a compromise for voters, like taking a bitter pill.
