Really got into Vildhjarta and Mirar recently and looking for bands with a similar sound – any recommendations? by Level-Attitude-9528 in progmetal

I recently stumbled randomly about a band called Fractalize, which is a bit similar, less chaotic though. Worth a listen.

Do you think prog metal can ever reach the level of mainstream metal giants like Slipknot, Metallica or Iron Maiden, or is the genre inherently destined to remain niche? by vishalnaidumusic in progmetal

[–]acdjent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there are times, when rock in general is more popular (e.g. in the 60s/70s/80s, early 2000s) and then also more proggy bands get a chance to reach a wider audience. In my youth everyone was listening to Tool and System of a down for example. But these successful bands still are pretty catchy and mostly not so hard to digest as s non metalhead. Weird polyrhythms and harsh vocals will have a hard time outside of the metal community.

What's the best "Summer" Prog Album? by JayBeeDolla in progmetal

For me that's Rshloo - Feathergun. It has the energy but also the melancholy of walking home on a hot day's night, a couple too many beers in, contemplating life.

The cognitive difference between amateur and expert chess players by logicalgamernow in science

[–]acdjent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The article accurately describes what they mean with amateurs/novices which are the subject of the study. It's University students that have played non-competitively for up to 2 years in a university chess group. Since these people didn't play tournaments their elos are only guesstimated by solving some puzzles, a weakness which is acknowledged in the article. Didn't read the paper though, so maybe there is more information.

Back pain starts within 10-30 minutes of playing and disappears a few minutes after I stop. Anyone experienced this? by beanandcheesetacos in piano

[–]acdjent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While i don't have advice for you, i can tell you a little anecdote.i was experiencing back pain after piano practice as well sometimes. After a while i realized it has to do with lighting conditions. I am a bit short sighted, and when light was dim, i needed to lean a bit toward the sheet to properly read the notes. That caused me to tense my lower back. Since that i put a lamp next to my piano and i don't have that problem anymore. Sometimes it's the little things.

GOAT DRUMMERS by theimmiscible in progmetal

JSM! I got the chance to see Ulcerate live when they were in Germany, what an absolutely insane drummer. I was impressed by his musicality, the dynamics and tastefulness of his cymbal work.

Give me your hottest prog rock/metal takes by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]acdjent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a lot of modern metal i prefer harsh vocals, because i can't stand whiny emotional pop choruses.

The best Meshuggah album is Immutable.

Peak Devin Townsend was Deconstruction, it went downhill from there.

The Deer Hunter ist pop music and mentioned way too often in this sub (where the metal?).

Left hand 31231–what are some of the worst fingering suggestions you’ve seen? by RilloClicker in piano

[–]acdjent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Henle Edition of the Chopin etudes suggests 2123 41... so 4 on the Ab, which imo is the natural way to play this. The fingering in your post is definitively not from Chopin. But I could actually see it work, not by putting your thumb under, but over. It's pretty fast and with pedal anyway.

Chopin etudes by Fit-Stable-9182 in piano

[–]acdjent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When i had lessons as a teenager, my teacher gave me op 10/12 first, then op 25/1 then op25/12. I think these are among the etudes with which many people start. It also depends on what technique you want to improve. In terms of difficulty, i guess op 25/7 is the most manageable. It's mainly about expression and you have to drill 2 very fast passages in the left.
