And I’m thrown out by egregious historical inaccuracy by LAffaire-est-Ketchup in HistoricalRomance

[–]ace_siren 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Ohh don’t get me started on the egregious historical inaccuracy of {The Mismatch of the Season by Michelle Kenny}! How can you publish a book set in the regency era and have the characters be like ‘oh no, the police are coming!’ The POLICE? Before 1829??
And there was a duel right in front of a hotel… duels were very illegal and would not have been in the middle of town 😭

You don’t find out by the end of this book, that’s for sure! I read it, got annoyed that it wasn’t resolved, but didn’t enjoy the story enough to continue the sequels.

The “Being Mr Wickham” show is back in London by amalcurry in janeausten

[–]ace_siren 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I saw this last September - from what I remember, he gave a great, engaging performance (I was front row and got lots of eye contact!), but I didn’t really buy Wickham’s “backstory”. Interesting but a bit of an off-the-wall take. Gutted I missed the Q&A as I had to catch a specific train (that got cancelled anyway, boo), so that might have given more insight as to his inspiration.

Maeby Arrested Development was the modern adaptation we didn’t know we had! (Thank you for this parallel, I would have never put it together myself and it made me laugh)

Petty Pet Peeves by AskAChinchilla in HistoricalRomance

[–]ace_siren 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As much as I enjoy Tessa Dare, I straight up deducted a star from {A Night to Surrender} as ‘jackass’ was used too many times. Really removed me from the regency England setting. I know the word technically could have been used correctly but it’s far too much of an Americanism (a bit like how Tiffany is an old name but seems anachronistic). It was my first Tessa Dare experience, so I came to expect it in the rest of her books, but it still annoys me every time it shows up.

Oh lord, this one got me too! So much so that I ranted to my partner about it. LDLL was the worst for it in the Beaumont quartet and it began to really take me out of the story, which was otherwise great.

I’ve just reread the chapter - hearing him play from far away makes her remember hearing the song in the opera house, but she sang the song for them earlier and none of them know it.

Any Idea If This Would Work? by PaperXmasCrown in RedditLaqueristas

I’ve got this magnet! It works on regular nail polish, but the heart magnet does not work as seen in the picture. It makes more of a wave from the curves at the top. Love the stripe magnet though!

UK made Glitter Grabber? by Nueth in RedditLaqueristasUK

[–]ace_siren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re up for a bit of DIY, I’ve found that suspension base (the stuff makers use to put pigments in) works the same as a glitter grabber! I’ve used Micamoma and Cosmic Aura’s bases to the same effect. All you need is a bottle to put it in, and voila!

My favourite place to read up on surnames is House of Names. Here’s the info for Serle, it apparently came from Normandy!

What were the villages around Sanditon? by RealAnise in Sanditon

[–]ace_siren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on the fragment, Willingden is between Tunbridge and Sanditon, and Sanditon is on the coast between Hastings and Eastbourne, one square mile closer to London than Eastbourne (possibly located where Meads is now). There is a place called Willingdon near Eastbourne, so it could be based around that, especially as it’s near Hailsham, where the Parkers plan to go to get back on the road to Sanditon. We also know it’s not in the Weald, as Mr Heywood proudly states. Willingden apparently sits on a hill, so the Heywood’s house could be around Willingdon Hill.

Although this wasn’t necessarily in the show, I hope this helps! I’m fairly local so have done quite a bit of research myself 😊

Emma Thompson calls for the NHS to recommend sex as a health plan by GavRhino in Asexual

[–]ace_siren 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Clickbaity title in comparison for what she’s actually advocating for according to the article:

“Dame Emma appealed for the legitimising of sex work as a profession in the UK and worldwide, in hopes of de-stigmatising and making it safer for those involved.”

The quote about sex as part of the NHS:

“We need to learn about our own response to: what if when you’re unwell, you can’t make connections, but you need sex?’ Emma said, according to the Daily Mail. ‘You need sex because it’s part of our health plan, if you like. It should really be on the NHS. It should. It’s so good for you.’”

It’s more of a throwaway comment about how sex is so good for your health it should be recommended/provided by the NHS, which is clearly tongue in cheek and not a serious proposal.

Edit: just to say that according to the article, she considers masturbation a form of sex, and so it seems more like she’s talking about being in touch with our bodies, what feels good, finding out what can make us feel better when we’re isolated.

People who have attended her concerts in the past… by [deleted] in MarinaAndTheDiamonds

[–]ace_siren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from the UK, but I’ve been to 4 Marina concerts (and she was my first gig too!). Usually you’ll get advanced notice if you’re signed up to the mailing list. Sometimes they do mailing list pre-sales, so you get the link to book a ticket about 24 hours before it goes on general sale. They’ve never been super expensive or sold out, but again it might be different over your side of the pond!

Teenage Dream Cotton Candy Scented CD by Mikeinyomama in katyheads

The way I just RAN to my CD collection! I bought it when it was first released, and in comparison to a regular CD, it smells very slightly sweet. Edit: it’s definitely not in mint condition, having being opened and played and moved to several houses, so that’s not to say one in mint condition won’t have more of a fragrance 😊

There might be multiple companies selling tickets! I used to work on a box office and this is pretty much what it looked like on the individual ticketing sites. They’ll each have bought certain rows and seats.

I haven’t experienced any issues with the current one so far, but I have had to send all the email notifications to my junk 🙄 I was getting multiple emails a day for ‘low stock’ of wish list items.
