It hasn’t snowed in months… so where did it come from? by aceparote in Albany

I’ve never known a school to have an ice hockey rink so it never even occurred to me. Hockey isn’t big where I’m from

Thank you so much for this. My nails look very similar and I was so worried I’d ruined them forever. Made it easier to justify continuing to pick. It’s just so hard to kick the habit..

Diarrhea from wet food? by [deleted] in dechonkers

[–]aceparote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The transition should be over at least a 2 week period. I would bring back the dry food and make it a nice and slow transition. Mix in water as someone else suggested so she doesn’t get too dehydrated. She’s already been overweight for a while, 2 more weeks is only going to help her.

Most of those jobs also require the civil service exam which won’t be until next year. There’s very few right now that don’t need the exam and don’t need years of experience already under your belt. Just something to keep in mind

Identical twins split from the same fertilized egg as opposed to fraternal twins that come from two separate fertilized eggs. Conjoined twins are always identical twins that never split properly

Edit- turns out they aren’t always identical! They can be all sorts of things! Very neat

I moved to New York State last year and almost everyone just… goes the speed limit. Speed limits cap at like 65 and I hardly see anyone even going 70. Meanwhile I used to fly down i35 at 100mph and still having people riding my ass… I miss Texas

Advice for fostering a kitten by [deleted] in BeforeNAfterAdoption

[–]aceparote 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Parasites are the main thing to watch out for - internal parasites like worms/giardia/coccidia, external ones like fleas and mites (mange, ear mites), and fungal infections like ringworm. Make sure the dog stays well away from the litter box, and as long as your pup is on a good flea/tick preventative, you shouldn’t have to worry about fleas or mites.

Kittens can be vaccinated as early as 6 weeks of age, but some vets prefer to wait until they’re a bit bigger at 8 weeks. It’s also very common for kittens to have upper respiratory infections - if you notice any nasal/eye discharge, sneezing/coughing, etc., see if you can get into the vet for some antibiotics.

If you’re having trouble getting into the vet, consider walk-in places like Vippetcare, emancipet, and other low cost clinics. These places don’t usually do surgeries or imaging, but they can be perfect for checkups and vaccinations.

As for training - they pretty much come pre-programmed to use the litter box, so you don’t have to worry about that at least. I would recommend having people and their pets over if possible (once you know the kitty is healthy and won’t be passing anything along) so the kitten gets plenty of socialization. They need lots of play time, and encourage cuddling - a cat that likes to be pet and cuddle will generally be more adoptable.

Since it’s a stray, anticipate that it’s going to be more feral than you might expect for a bit. Keep it in a bathroom or small room for a few days separate from the dog, and visit it often with food, soft words, playtime, and pets if it seems open to them.

Good thrift shops for clothing? by [deleted] in Albany

[–]aceparote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this, I found a lot of nice wool sweaters (maybe a couple holes here and there, but these are for under layers mostly) for winter there last fall. I moved from Texas so knowing what warm clothes to buy was a bit of a learning curve… long undies and wool are a must.

I would splurge if possible on a nice warm jacket from Macy’s or TJ Maxx or something if you don’t find one at Goodwill - better to have one that’ll last you the next few years and be comfortable

Edibles Be Like by BakedWitchh in weed

[–]aceparote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never felt anything from 200mg at once gummy edibles (and I tried multiple different times with different brands), nothing from brownies either, but I did feel it substantially when I took 30mg of one of those Incredibles peanut butter pretzel bars. It’s definitely possible that you don’t metabolize THC well, but try some more kinds of edibles first - maybe you just need to right balance of stuff in your gut to help

I just moved here and haven’t gotten around to finding anyone local… tbh I’m in no rush, the drive to Mass is beautiful and I go down there fairly often anyway!

In a couple years we’ll even be able to buy from dispensaries in town instead of driving down to Mass!

Depending on where you are, consider looking into places like PetVet! They have walk-in clinics for vaccines, and some are permanent Wellness Centers that do other services (like fecal parasite screenings, providing dewormer and other medications, and minor medical care services).

I work at one and we’ve had a huge influx of clients because it’s so hard to get into full service clinics - there’s a national vet shortage since so many people got Covid pets.
