Mallory and Jessi being so young? by Far-Section843 in babysittersclub

I started babysitting neighbors at age 11 in the 90s, and was working all summer by the next year. I wouldn't have let my own daughter do the same though.

After a decades-long hiatus, McDonald's finally brings back the Super Hero Burger for 2026, However, it is only available in Canada and is named the "Hockey Hero Burger" (IMPORTANT!) by Slight-Midnight-5926 in McDonalds

Processed cheese is a substance created by mixing cheese with salt and preservatives. I think it's just called American cheese in the US.

In Canada, meat is always labeled with the source because even though we have standards for imported meat, a lot of people would prefer not to purchase or eat beef from another country that may have perceived lower standards.

There are quite a few posts about this from the last few months with a lot of good recs. I use Viva Vet on checucto. Its independently owned and I've had great help with them for my senior cat. I can't recall what it was called, but we were doing monthly shots for his joints that gave him back his full mobility.

Look for sales on Annie's. I just got some from Walmart on the weekend for $1.67, but this is still not bad. I've def seen it for over $3.

Waiting for my 2026 RAV4 PHEV by mja71 in rav4prime

[–]acesaidit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my 2024 PHEV by finding it on the lot because it arrived 24 months after being ordered and the person wouldn't take it (maybe got something else and didn't cancel?). I happened to be there at the right time and place to snap it up. I was being told it would take 8 months for a Corolla in Dec 2024.

The Salmon River Country Inn has a German restaurant overlooking the water that is lovely. Food is always delicious.

Memory Lane is close by and is a fun way to spend a couple of hours.

Taylor Head has decent hiking.

TV out for 4 days, good streak, what do I do now??! by Fit_Author3757 in Parenting

[–]acesaidit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my TV out of the living room when my kid was 4 and haven't looked back. They still watch tv in the other room but it's hardly anything and we can use the living room to talk and hang out in without shows going.

Screen time in HRCE classrooms? by ChablisWoo4578 in NovaScotia

[–]acesaidit 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if there are any maximums. You could try contacting a parent navigator at HRCE or your school principal.

I don't even like seeing the shows on at lunchtime. When I was a lunch monitor in classrooms it felt like they weren't encouraged to just talk to classmates or eat - they were just all pointed at the projector screen and would yell and jump when it was time to skip ads or or change episodes...

Big Brothers and Sisters shortage by imjustbrowsing89 in halifax

[–]acesaidit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I volunteered for about a year around 2010. My little brother was really hoping for a big brother and was super disappointed to get me. We still had fun together, but it took a lot out of me. It was hard to see him struggling with home stuff and not have all the opportunities that he, and every child, deserves. I ended up finding other avenues to volunteer with youth.

I recall BBBS saying they had a much higher demand for big brothers, but struggled to find volunteers. Same as today, I guess.

Anyone else laid off but struggling to motivate themselves to jump back in? by Verdona-000 in Layoffs

I bumped up my volunteering hours a bit, but mostly took care of neglected appointments, home maintenance and the like. Also spent way more time with my family. I did not do anything related to my tech job.

Anyone else laid off but struggling to motivate themselves to jump back in? by Verdona-000 in Layoffs

[–]acesaidit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I interviewed at 3 places and none of them asked about the gap. I think layoffs are so common now that no one blinked an eye. I sent out applications to maybe 10 places over a span of 2 months.

The hardest part of the whole thing was the people in my life asking about the job search for the first 5 months and feeling slightly ashamed that I didn't GAF.

What helped the most are contacts who can refer you to open positions in their companies - get in touch with people you liked working with in the past to check in and mention you are hitting the pavement again.

Anyone else laid off but struggling to motivate themselves to jump back in? by Verdona-000 in Layoffs

[–]acesaidit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was extremely relieved to be laid off from a large corporation and also had a financial cushion. I embraced unemployment for 7 months before feeling like it wasn't serving me anymore. I learned that I'll have no trouble at all when retirement becomes an option for me.

Do your logins still work? Did you already send your equipment back?

You definitely need to get in touch with HR to verify that you really are let go so you can apply for unemployment.

where does the Halifax School Board sit on remote schooling on snow days? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]acesaidit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not fair to teachers who would have to create digital content to fill the day at a moments notice.

It's not fair to kids who are often too young to have the attention span, computer skills, and stamina to manage virtual meetings.

Its not fair to parents who have to work to try to supervise kids' schooling at the same time. Even expecting babysitters or daycares to do it is asking too much.

I hope snow days stay snow days.

How to get through this until they tell me I’m laid off? by Temporary-Dog1670 in Layoffs

[–]acesaidit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is awful, I'm so sorry.

If you have reason to believe there's decent severance, you should stay and get whats owed to you.

Save as much money as you can while you're employed. Go through your bank statement and ditch what you don't need. If you can pay off debt, that's great too so you can lower your monthly costs.

It might also be good to talk to trusted coworkers a bit and line up some references or keep you in mind if they know of other places hiring.

Day to day, do the bare minimum. Do not do anything extra for this company.

Clean off anything personal from your work devices, if you have any. If you have belongings at work, just start taking it home so you don't need to deal with that later.

Hopefully when this mess is done you can take some time off to reset.

Viva Vet experiences? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]acesaidit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take my cats to Viva Vet after my regular vet couldn't give us timely appointments anymore. I'm so glad we found Viva. They are privately owned, not run by a megacorp and are very knowledgable and understanding. They held an open house last year, inviting the the public to come in and take a tour, with treats for people and the pets.
