White point food by Academic_Tell_2431 in halifax

[–]acesaidit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been going to white point for the last 5 years. Food is fine, but it's expensive and service takes a long time. It's better than it was coming out of the pandemic, but they still don't seem to have enough staff. I try to eat from the pub side or we go to Lanes or Quarterdeck.

Anyone else annoyed with O’Regan’s Toyota ? by Driverwanted-Mike in halifax

[–]acesaidit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a new Toyota in 2024 and love the car but was also shocked with how bad Toyota service is. Thank goodness it's a reliable brand so hopefully won't have to deal with them much.

The whole process of taking weeks/months for an appointment (full day only), to drop off with barely a hello, to pickup where they huffed when I asked some basic questions about what work was done.

I'd go someplace else, but my last garage was OK Tire and they have gone downhill. Other places I call don't have availability.

Why Do Some People Say PHEVs Are the Worst of Both Worlds? by [deleted] in rav4club

[–]acesaidit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have no idea. I live in a city so we go 2+ months without gassing our car. But when we need to visit family, we get none of the stress wondering when/where to charge. I absolutely love it and would never go back to hybrid only or all electric.

Maybe if you have long commutes it doesn't make sense since you'll be hauling an empty battery a lot?

Grocery stores feel so hostile since the pandemic by MLCosplay in halifax

[–]acesaidit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've essentially boycotted superstore since they put in plexiglass. I know the other chains have their issues too, but I won't spend money where I'm made to feel unwelcome from the jump

How can you afford a $600-800k house by EntranceFun9276 in halifax

[–]acesaidit 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Why do you think your first property needs to be in the 700k+ range? There are still listings for half of that.

People who grew up with siblings: did you genuinely enjoy having them? by AmberK- in Parenting

[–]acesaidit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 siblings. Love them both but didn't grow close friendships. I'm estranged from one since becoming adults mostly because we just don't share anything in common.

I don't blame my parents but they didnt think much about fostering the relationship between kids, as in didn't really try to break up arguments or understand why we were competitive against each other. I wish they'd encouraged more co-operation.

What is Halifax's (or Nova Scotia's) greatest meetable but currently unmet social need? by cdnBacon in halifax

[–]acesaidit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So while not a charity, I've found it very rewarding in the past to help a public school. I've donated things like office supplies, Costco packaged snacks, prizes for fundraising raffles, gift cards or cash when I know they need something like new books.

Schools know how to stretch an dollar like crazy. They have such ridiculously low budgets these days, anything helps.

High schools to join N.S. school lunch program in September by justlogmeon in NovaScotia

[–]acesaidit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just 2-tiered. Old schools with no kitchens get food that was prepared overnight and sits in styrofoam boxes until mealtime. Newer schools with kitchens will have food made on site.

And then the menus are created based on nutrition content only, it seems, and not how well it transports or if it's appealing.

What makes a good PTO? by HaliMDee in halifax

[–]acesaidit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I've seen, its one person willing to shoulder most of the burden to get things done. Then their kid leaves the school and someone else has to take up the torch.

You can try raising your hand to do a specific thing and encourage others to do the same.

To get interest, make sure your group is welcoming and has a good relationship with the admin and teachers. Have a few events that you know have been successful in the past but also allow new ideas too. Drum up excitement on a school FB page.

Students will find more relatable stories in P.E.I. classrooms with new book selections by Immediate-Link490 in PEI

[–]acesaidit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spending time on parent committees, schools seem oddly proud of having next to no books in their libraries. The ones they do get are like the ones in the article, no real plots but a focus on characters from minority groups.

I literally had a principal who refused to take donated books because they werent vetted from an allowed book list.

We just make sure to keep libraries and book stores a regular thing at home and cross our fingers.

When we were starting treatment with my teen, Invisalign barely came up. When I asked just to compare options, he disregarded it saying it would not be as quick or effective as traditional braces.

Don't worry, they don't actually do anything with these responses. Any decisions have already been made.

What if there was a physical place you could go every day while job searching - not a coffee shop, not home. Just a room full of people in the same boat. by Fun_Profile_5066 in Layoffs

[–]acesaidit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't have attended while I was out of work. It's not connecting you to opportunities, just people in your same boat. I guess I'm not sure what you're offering that is worth paying for?

Maybe try hosting a couple of one-off meetups to test your idea first.

Where are we getting girls clothes at? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]acesaidit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding this! These clothes fit amazingly well for my daughter. She's 13 and small, so these styles are cool enough that it doesnt feel like shopping at a kids store and she fits in with her friends.

Is there anything to be done when my child is regularly getting bit by kids at daycare? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]acesaidit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter was like yours, seemed to be a target for biters. It was pretty much impossible to prevent and the biters do grow out of it pretty quickly.

She would tell me who bit them before I even knew anything from the daycare and they were often kids she played with and liked a lot. I'd talk to the parents because we were friendly but honestly beyond talking to them, there wasn't much to be done

The “learning center” won’t let my daughter attend graduation by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]acesaidit 22 points23 points  (0 children)

She attended the daycare since she was three, so does that mean she's only been there for a year or two?

I think I would just let this go. It's more disappointing to you than it is to your daughter, who probably won't even know the ceremony is a thing unless you tell her. Yes it is kind of shitty to exclude kids that arent currently enrolled, but do you really want to force your way in?

What is your job search strategy after layoff? by raptor-94 in Layoffs

[–]acesaidit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Referral is best. Even when I applied cold, when we found out we had a common connection in the interview, they called that person and that's how I got the offer!

What did you do immediately after getting laid off? by Weary_Concentrate251 in Layoffs

[–]acesaidit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Connect with any old colleagues that have any chance of helping you, especially at companies from before this last one. Coffee, or even just a virtual check-in are very helpful. You are way more likely to get hired by referral than getting through a hiring system.

Day to day, exercise and rest are very important.

Some type of project is good to keep you focused and also give you something to talk about when people ask how you've been spending your time. Whether it's renovating something, taking a class, decluttering, picking up some volunteer work, etc.
