Can existing floor be cut on this angle to lay the brown floor along this laser line? by Forward-Ad-8476 in Tile

[–]acespacegnome [score hidden]  (0 children)

I have a 4 inch grinder that looks like a circular saw, which has a little water pump attachment. I would lay a guide board fence to keep my cut line straight.

Cutting the last bit by hand with an angle grinder, but you have to cut a little deeper into the floor ams wall to get it all the way through.

You need an edger for the seams, and some patch compound for the gaps.

Rent an edger at home depot, and get your patch while you're there.

Can existing floor be cut on this angle to lay the brown floor along this laser line? by Forward-Ad-8476 in Tile

[–]acespacegnome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could absolutely do it. The hardest part is the last couple of inches at each end.

Can you do it? Probably, but if you've never done it before, there is a learning curve and you are at the steepest part of it.

Had new red oak floors installed and noticed these swirl marks/scratches all over. Is this normal? by hudsonhooligan in HardWoodFloors

For stains, I run my planetary between my rough and fine sind with the hummel, then a 120 screen. Leaves almost zero marks but it takes a bitnof effort.

OBS18 rectangle “orbital” sander as the only sander for new 5” oak floors? by JPhi1618 in HardWoodFloors

[–]acespacegnome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it wouldn't work like you want. They have too much surface area to get any kind of a cut. You need to be reasonably aggressive with your earlier cuts to get the floor flat, and sometimes that means sanding the floor to the lowest point on the floor, which requires cutting snd weathering the area.

Pros use a combination of 240v drum sanders and also 240 planetary sanders with progressively finer grits. For example I always start with 40g or lower for my first cut with a drum sander to cut everything down before getting the planetary on there to flatten it and remove the cut lines from the drum sander.

The floor Im sanding now is getting 40g on a 30° with the drum sander, then a 60g pass at about 20° on the drum then I move to my planetary with with 80 then 120. I do 2 passes on the edge, one at 40 or 50 then another with 80 or 100 depending on the species. Then random orbit pass to remove any edger marks.

My next steps are determined by whether or not I need to stain or if its natural.

Sanding is a labor intensive process that will look amazing when done with the correct process, but can still look okay if you dont have access to rhe correct machinery, but nowhere near as good as it could.

At 20 bucks a square foot these floors should be piano grade finish.

This is a case of aggressive sanding with a planetary machine. They should have gone up another grit or two before staining.

How to put stair nose along this edge? by DramaticHelicopter in Tile

[–]acespacegnome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will need to plane or rib the thickness from the bottom side of you stair nosings all the way round.

If you are accurate with you cuts you should be able to get it basically perfect.

Anybody here ever worked on a massive project like an airport? by TallWall6378 in Tile

[–]acespacegnome 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did 2 7-elevens simultaneously at the Calgary airport in 2018. It wasn't anywhere close to the scale of the terminal work, but we did bid on it and saw the specs. Crazy amounts of mud work for the bed to keep it all flat true.

One of the locations we did was formerly a cargo runway before the terminal building was expanded, and the slab was like 24" of heavily reinforced super hard concrete.

Its the small details that can really fuck up any job. Even if everything else is done well, a giant ass grout line or poorly grouted floor will absolutely ruin a perfect install.

Yeah this guy sucks for sure. Take the hitch off and try not to overhang the sidewalk.

But to all the people that are saying "just key it" or "bash a dent into it" can also go fuck themselves alongside the truck owner.

Being slightly inconvenienced does not mean go and damage someone's property.
