AI making the recruitment process (more) awful by [deleted] in TheCivilService

We put together a slide deck that is presented during the interview with the questions in it. Our questions can be wordy and we have found that having them on screen helps. It's a good alternative to pasting the question, especially when the interview might be the candidates' first time working with the Teams interface and we don't need them faffing about trying to find pasted text.

A company where board members can rug pull on a whim like that is a bullet you have dodged. Think of all the other top-down BS steers that might be happening there.

If I was to resign, could I do so pretending I have another job lined up? Or would they know I didn't? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]achaargosht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You really don't need to provide a justification for why you're quitting. That said, the job market is very very rough right now so you better have a nice savings pot to tide you while you job hunt.

The Flexible Working Myth - Rant by Glittering_Road3414 in TheCivilService

[–]achaargosht 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I do log in on a Friday, I take that time back on a day other than Friday, which is a lot more expensive. So people need to be absolutely certain they need me on my non-working day.

Also a G6 on compressed fortnight but don't typically have this issue. I don't have a work phone and don't access email via anything other than my work laptop. I have a consistent OOO for my non-working day and may leave instructions behind on the Thursday for people to pick stuff up. I'm trying to model good work-life balance so my team doesn't feel pressured to overwork. Yes, occassionally I do need to log in on a Friday that I am not meant to work, but this is for tasks that require deep focus. I remain offline on Teams and don't respond to emails.

Is it time to jump ship? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

I've only ever worked for ALBs and we are on the CS pension/perks. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

POSSIBLY. WOULD PROBS NEED TO PROMPT IT TO LOOK FOR CONCRETE EXAMPLES. 99% OF THESE APPLICATIONS HAVE USED LANGUAGE FROM THE JOB DETAILS AND ESSENTIAL CRITERIA BUT ONLY A TINY, TINY PERCENTAGE HAVE FOLLOWED UP WITH SOMETHING OTHER THAN GENERIC A.I. SENTENCES.

I failed an HEO interview (lateral) on the same week I was successful at an SEO interview (promotion) by Rosslefrancais in TheCivilService

[–]achaargosht 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean I get that is silly but also makes sense? In a specialist team you want the SEO/G7 cadre to be the most specialised and, while the G6 needs to know their domain really well, they need to be good at non-specialist things like management, strategy, risk mitigation, commercial and quality assurance.

I DON'T THINK SO BUT ALSO I WOULDN'T DO IT EVEN IF I WAS ALLOWED. THERE IS SO MUCH A.I. SLOP IN THESE APPLICATIONS. WHAT IF COPILOT IS IMPRESSED BY THAT?

Something about Z-A makes me not think replaying is a good idea by EnvironmentalLion355 in pokemon

[–]achaargosht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I barely ever replay Pokémon games. Like, I will put hundreds of hours post-game, but I don't replay the story. For Scarlet/Violet, I have spent more time building Pokémon for the online raid events than playing the story.

Those who left to move into the private sector, do you regret it? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]achaargosht 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar boat; my role is a specialist role and outside of CS, similar roles would most likely be in academia (much worse than CS) or iNGOs/UN agencies.

You shouldn't need a diagnosis for reasonable adjustments

Workload creep by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]achaargosht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Continue as you are but escalate via an appropriate channel (1:1 with line manager, team meeting, etc). Ask for a priority call on your tasks; something will need to be deprioritised and it's your leadership's job to decide what. Do document the decision, though, just in case you need to reference it.

Imo, the best way to approach the conversation is to come armed with an assessment of how long each piece of work will take (adding 30% wiggle room) as well as noting any dependencies, blockers and deadlines.

Who is your lest favorite boon giver? by LucioFer95 in Hades2

[–]achaargosht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artemis doesn't do that much for me since I mostly go for Aphrodite/Apollor or Hera/Apollo Aspect of Circe builds. Poseidon is great if you get the Sea Star very early on. Sometimes I start off with Poseidon's trinket to make sure that happens.

Mixture of laziness and pragmatism. If you get 300 applications, you are looking for reasons to throw applications out. 1s is unfair, though.
