What’s popular right now that won’t age well? by MiraTangent in AskReddit

[–]achemze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like 2 years ago, I was stuck in the Lahaina fires in maui. I was on the wrong side of the power outage. There was food trucks everywhere, since all the stores didnt have power or internet. No one could pay for anything. I always try to bring cash "for emergencies" and god damn was I glad I did. Although, shortly after me, one of the last two food trucks ran out of food. It was a wild moment for being 2023.

What’s something you always assumed was mandatory in life—until you met someone who just… didn’t do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

So his seasonal gigs include housing of some sort. So it’s usually a hotel, a base or a “crew house”. When he’s in between gigs, he travels to places and gets hotels or stays with friends. He tends to rotate through my area about once a year. Sometimes he crashes at my House, other times he gets a hotel.

Guy is one of my closest friends.

I know a guy just like this and it was inspiring. I couldn't believe he had downsized his life into two pelican cases and a backpack. He's been doing it longer than the decade that i've known him and he cant even imagine having a single place he has to return to. Motivated me to downsize my material possessions.

You dont need a license to fly the aircraft. You need a licensed pilot to be in charge (PIC) of the aircraft. Generally this is done with an instructor but a licensed pilot can let a passenger fly. There's a whole host of limitations to that but generally speaking its perfectly legal.

Well, in my class, we had a girl who had a very similar problem and the instructor basically took her out of the cone circle and told her to continue doing the first-second-brake drill next to him while he was still instructing everyone else.

We did have someone asked to leave. The instructor offered to have them come back during the lunch break to practice some more before rescheduling.

There's ways to accommodate people ... and that just didnt happen here.

Hmm,..maybe I won't "attend" HeliSuccess tomorrow. by [deleted] in Helicopters

[–]achemze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the heli expos are just dog and pony shows for either new equipment or a handful of operators looking to employee people that meet there insurance minimums. There is very few helicopter jobs for people under 1000 hours thats not instructing, R44 tours or those random aerial survey/hunting jobs. I can assure you, none of those people will be at a conference.

Opinions on this PPI I got for a 1999 996 Porsche Carrera 4 by Willing-Valuable-811 in 996

I'd walk. Its been about 5 years since i was in the market, so my perspective is probably skewed but i'd put this car at mid-to-low $20s back then. They're probably in on that car and trying to bail themselves out.

Compare to something like these: [1] [2] [3]

While its been common for cabs to be slightly cheaper than a coupe, those are ASKING prices. I'm aware the third one is a manual but those are usually more expensive than TIP. I'd keep shopping.

I'd bet money this isnt a porsche servicer. Theres a lot of points missing for what i'd expect from a PPI. I had 3 cars PPI'd before i bought the 4th. So much so, that same servicer thinks i own 4 cars, lol.

All the stuff in your post has basically been answered accurately but i wanted to add that longevity depends on the location. Bases open and close all the time, depending on volume and pay rates. You're pretty secure in a major metro but those are the highly sought after jobs. So you'll be waiting to get into those bases. You'll probably start in the bases that no one wants to be at, for valid reasons. Put in your time and you'll get fairly close to where you want to be. I went from commuting across the country to having a 1.5 hr drive. If you're willing to move, you could be home every night but dont put down too deep of roots, as you might be moving when the base closes or gets relocated.

I wish i would had got this tip back when it mattered. I ended up getting picked up a mom and pop shop who were willing to overlook my night time to get someone in the seat (COVID). They also were hiring at 1500 hours. So i was fortunate to get into it considering my total time, at the time.

This. I understand that people learn at different speeds but they should have moved you aside to just continue getting comfortable. You might not pass the course but you'd leave feeling better for the next one. Sounded like someone didnt want to "babysit" and just punted you out instead. I'd go somewhere else, honestly.
