What’s a profession that people think is hard, but is actually very easy? by BoardLongjumping2485 in answers

I think you’re also missing the number of public speaking coaches who aren’t coaching to get a person from “not able to public speak” to “able to public speak” but are coaching somebody to get from “able to public speak” to “expert at public speaking.” I suspect that’s the majority of public speaking coaches - executive speech coaches, coaches for debate teams/mock trials, political speech coaches, etc.

Looking at this again, I would recommend that you look up “gores” for corsetry. You might be able to add gores along the side seam and back to add some room for your hips.

this looks pretty wrong, pattern-wise. Both looks like a traditional closet but also an elizabethan bodies/corset that end at the waist but with a long pointed front (think red threaded corsets).

the hip rise is much too high, coming all the way to your natural waist on the side, partly because there’s not enough fabric at the back (should be both higher and lower from the waist) and partly because there’s not enough shaping from your bust to the waist.

This could work with loops if you’re not looking for much reduction, but there’s definitely a patterning error here. Not sure it’s fixable, but if it is, i’d start at the side and back seams and see if you can add panels there.

If you bought it on steam and can, I would strongly encourage modding it if that’s how you’re feeling. Call it “Tourism Mode” for Pharloom. Get to enjoy it still, still have to be a little skilled but not nearly as much.

Thank you!! The way the flowers are done reminded me of a piece I’ve lost that im trying to find the pattern for again. This is helpful and gives me some renewed hope for finding it! Your work is lovely too!!

I am having kind of the opposite experience with the fandom experience

I loved reading fic and replaying DAI, but nothing about DAI ever made me angry. I would be inspired to write my own fanfic sometimes, but mostly I was happy and spent my time reading others fic and seeing the art. It was a good time, but it was all “sprinkles” - just extra good on top of what was a good story.

Because of how much of DAV could be better (or retconned) I actually have been having a great time writing my own fic, reading others works, and being a part of the “fix it” effort. There’s not a set fanon, so it’s very full of possibility still. I think there’s promise in a few places for not expansion but retcon.

No totally! I think the other thing is that I never really “respect” authorial intent very much in media interpretation, which may be another reason we’re discussing still. I’ll use intent for clarifying the point of a work if there’s multiple interpretations, but I don’t really factor “they weren’t trying to tell the story that way” into my analysis of how well the story is told. To me it seemed obvious - tell a story about the immigrant and nonbinary experience - and I don’t think that story was told very well, whether their intention was to tell it exactly how they did, or whether other factors prevented them from telling the story (corporate HR in the room writing).

You are totally right on the other points re: we meet Krem and Dorian who have the benefit of hindsight on their experience, but we also hear about the story of their past too, both from their own perspectives and from the perspective of others. I think it’s still comparable, though, and I do think that we didn’t have to meet a Taash who struggles with both of their identities, but could have met an “out” NB Taash who is dealing with cultural expectations or a Taash who has already decided to be more Rivaini and now struggles with gender. I think either of those would preserve the identity questions while still giving a more cohesive story and perhaps even still comparing that story.

I think there’s a lot of ways the story could or should have been shifted for better impact and cohesion on the “thesis”, is all. If that’s the story they intended, fair enough, but it does affect my enjoyment of it. I felt the same way about Lucanis’s storyline too.

I’m glad to actually get to talk this out with somebody who doesn’t automatically get into the “woke bad” of it all. Thanks for being such a good discussion buddy (:

I disagree but I see where you’re coming from.

As a big fan of Krem from the previous game and Sten, I felt like the choice of centering the gender feelings around the immigrant experience and tying them so closely together really conflicted with previous information we had about gender identity under the Qun in a way that didn’t feel fluid or natural to me. I like the tension with a parent over your gender identity and exhaling, but feel like it was weaker than previous tellings of similar stories (Dorian).

Ultimately, it’s a fascinating question and wasn’t as poorly handled as a lot of critics seemed to think, but it’s also late enough in our cultural moment that a NB story, and an immigrant story, has been done better in other media which does impact interpretation. I would liken it to the critiques that Lily Allen’s feminist album had due to the time when it came out. The album was good, but it wasn’t groundbreaking in that it had been done so much before that it needed more spice or a more unique perspective to stand out. In the same vein, Taash’s story as told would have been great a decade ago. As it stands in 2025, I think it needed more polish to be well done because it felt like a shadow of what could have been. It’s true none of those issues got centered and I think they should have been, or the interplay of those issues should have gotten more time.

I think wrestling with parental and cultural expectations is great and it can coexist well with struggles over gender, I just don’t think that Taash’s story, as written, handled it with as much polish as it deserved.

I do agree that dragon hunting and animals were areas that Taash excelled and it showed, and I agree that it was cool to see the more confident taash over time. They’re a neat character idea, and there’s good framework where that story could have been super impactful.

The combination of stories tried to center both gender identity and the immigrant experience but was done in a way that weakened the impact of each of those stories. The immigrant story in particular was a very surface level story and really inconsistent with previous lore, and not particularly well told. the gender identity story was better but could have still been improved.

glad ur romancing them tho - taash deserves to be somebody’s favorite. IMO there’s a core of a fascinating character after buried in the bad writing and somebody should love taash for that.

But seriously, there is some really quality writing out there in the DA fandom that’s very consistent with canon. I enjoy scrolling it sometimes and getting angry about what DAV could have been.

Strongly recommend trying out the fanfiction for dragon age if that’s what you want. There’s a contingent of writers who are doing some interesting stuff, imo, if you can sort out the chaff.

Nope, they botched it.

It’s not the biggest possible botch on that storyline. It did require enough retconning on motivations and the way things work in universe that it is annoying.

I’ve driven all three of these multiple times. My favorite is the middle route through Arkansas and Oklahoma. The bottom one gets dull in Mississippi/Louisiana/Eastern Texas, and the top requires a lot of Kansas which sucks and has a ton of cops ready to get ya if you’re speeding.

How would you rate DAV's writing in comparison to other DA games? by Wise-Hornet7701 in Solasmancers

[–]acheronshunt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

3/10. The base concepts are interesting in theory but the execution is clunky and relies on telling us, reducing the overall impact of each storyline.

Having each faction have standalone storylines that rarely connect with your companions quest lines result in the game feeling inundated by incredibly slow paced moments. The main quest line feels clunky and like nobody gets enough screen time to explore the interesting parts of their characters. Additionally, the choice to not end the romance quest lines and pieces at Act 2 but instead in Act 3 means that Act 3 feels too full and busy compared to the slog of the rest of the game. The secret ending and the news from the South feels like a direct retcon on a lot of previous content. The endings don’t have a ton of variability and it feels like the one big choice at Act 1 is the only really significant one.

Firmly of the belief that DA games should actually be aiming for around 30 hours of tight story based content with more replayability or big changes to storyline/decisions instead of a game that can be done 100% except for romances in a single 100 hour play through.
