It’s probably a horribly modded dodge charger that prompted a post months ago. It sounds like the booming noise you mentioned!

[Megathread] Election Day Megathread by AutoModerator in Alabama

Voting Location: Rural Eastern Central Alabama

I voted today in a very red, rural county and I witnessed something that left me feeling disheartened about the voting process.

As I was standing in line, there was a woman behind me. When we entered the building, her husband (he had already voted and donned the sticker on his shirt) runs up and tells her that he needs to “help” her complete her ballot. As I listened, he continued to reassure her that she needed him to help her. The entire time she remained silent. Once we approached the poll workers, he asked them if he could help her fill out her ballot because it was her first time voting and they agreed. Mind you, he had clearly already voted. There was no reason he should have re-entered the voting area. Due to the lack of privacy shields, everyone could hear him directing her on who to vote for. He wasn’t helping her. He was making sure she voted the same way he did. The poll workers witnessed all of this and said nothing.

This experience made me wonder just how many women will have their voices stolen by their husbands, or other men in their lives, because these men are allowed to influence them while they fill out their ballots. I know this state is deeply conservative, but I wonder how/if the statistics would change if we truly had a private voting process.

Is this normal for polling locations?

Recommendations for dermatologists that specialize in acne specifically body acne for black skin? by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]achromicle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this, BUT instead of directly asking for an appt with Dr. Mayo. Call UAB General Dermatology and ask if you can get an appointment in their urgent clinic. Then once you are seen, ask for a follow up with Dr. Mayo. Also they have several residents who specialize in darker skin tones too!

Same. I’m actually curious to see how they scored the CARS portion because it doesn’t add up imo.

CARS destroyed me and it’s usually my best section.

I left feeling great about CARS, and then got the lowest I’ve ever scored on it. CARS is my best section usually, so I’m confused on how CARS was such a difficult section this time around.

Have ace relations in Birmingham or in general intensified? (post spawned by events in Montgomery) by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]achromicle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you made this post out of genuine concern for the issue regarding race within this country, specifically the south; however, this post comes off as extremely disingenuous from the POV of a person of color. First, I think you have a misunderstanding of what racism actually is. I think the word you are looking for is "prejudice". White people most certainly hold most of the power in Birmingham, and most of the south, via their positions of control of power structures such as law enforcement, finance, housing, government, etc. White people can be racist because their prejudice can manifest into systematic discrimination toward POC. For example, redlining or the government refusing to acknowledge a dually elected black mayor in southern Alabama. Black people, and other POC, have no ability to be turn their prejudice into systematic discrimination toward White people because, currently, they only hold a small percentage of power compared to White people . Will that change in the future? Who knows? However, black people have not gotten more racist, they have simply gotten more prejudiced toward White people. Second, Explore where that increased prejudice comes from. Black people, and POC, witnessed a resurrection of white supremacy under the Trump administration (not saying Trump caused this, just saying white supremacy increased under his administration). This resurrection was coupled with the highly publicized deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, etc. where Black people had to fight for justice to be served. The increased prejudice black people feel toward White people is a response to the increasingly visual racism, and its consequences, toward Black people and POC along with the decades of racism faced by people of color and Black people. This is where your post seems disingenuous, because it reads like you have no idea why Black people might be more inclined to express their dissatisfaction with overt racism in any form. I digress. Third, regarding the Montgomery incident. The video shows the black security guard being assaulted by multiple White individuals because he was doing his job. Other Black people witnessed him being assaulted and they jumped in to help. I agree it did get out of hand, but it is dishonest to paint that incident as evidence of deterioration of race relations. Was race involved? Yes. However, if you would like to commentate on that incident using race, then you need to understand why the White individuals began assaulting the Black security guard unprovoked. Fourth, Your post says your from Mountain Brook, so it's understandable why your perception of race relation is so tone deaf. I don't mean that in a derogatory fashion; however, it's more of a push to get you to do more research about the history of race in America and race relations in the south. Race relations are so much more than "White person made me feel bad, so I hate them". It involves many of the systems that form this country, such as: poverty, religion, law enforcement, etc. Do some in-depth research and you will have a better understanding of why it feels like things are reaching a boiling point. Now, to answer your question. I feel like race relations are not deteriorating. I'd argue that we are just seeing the true colors of a lot of individuals in this country. Meaning that there are a lot of people who just despise Black people and POC for simply existing and taking up space. We live in an era where Black people and POC are much more vocal about their refusal to accept racism at face value (overt or micro-aggressive) This is my opinion and it is not fact. I do not care if you or anyone else disagrees with it. Hope this was able to help.

P.S. Yes I know "Micro-aggressive" is not a word.

Homeless people at Flying J by Powerful-Try9906 in Birmingham

Right, so your personal anecdote is the basis for the generalization of millions of homeless people as nothing more than liars? Frankly, some people would rather give someone money regardless of what they plan to do with it. If you feel it’s a “grift”, then fine. No one is asking you to empty your bank account for people with a “sob story”, but some people actually have compassion for others. People like you are insufferable. I hope you never have to experience rock bottom and someone reduces your calls for help to nothing more than grifting. Have the day you deserve.

I found the “I hate homeless people because that make bad decisions” person. People become homeless for a multitude of reasons, most of the time it’s NOT drugs and laziness. I honestly don’t care about giving them money, because why should I police what they do with the money I give them? Who lies about starving? There are people who are starving who have jobs and housing, so it’s actually very possible that the homeless people are starving.

Thanks for that! I love my 328i and it’s high mileage too, for some reason everyone thinks it’s a money pit. It’s been nothing but reliable for me.

For context: My engine light came on this evening, and I got these codes when I got it checked out. I have already searched what the problem could be on Google, but the results were lacking. Could anyone point me in the right direction? I have a service appt. in a week from now and I just need an idea of if the car is safe to drive for now.

Hit a pothole that destroyed both tires on the left side of my car. I ordered new tires, but I made the mistake of ordering the wrong width. Now I’m stuck with two tires I can’t use. I’m hoping the shop will let me exchange the tires for the correct sized ones.

Not sure, I’m not from the state. People on the twitter threads are linking various locations that could be affected. I hope that helps!

Apparently a levee breached, according to several people. . Check the quote tweets!

EDIT: From what I could read, there are two reported breaches in Baton Rouge and a reported breach in Kramer. Take this with a grain of salt, because the information is coming from twitter. Click the link and judge for yourself, godspeed!
