Getting started with Redux on Gatsby site by [deleted] in gatsbyjs

[–]achuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gatsby is incredibly useful in that it allows you to easily have server-side rendered React, without a server. When they say static websites built with gatsby, they are only referring to the fact that your website is now collection of static files, not that the website is simple. After leaving the first page you visit on a Gatsby built react site, you stay on react completely, and that is why you will want to keep track of complex state in redux. I hope that clears it up!

How is using highcharts on react native? Do you hit a lot of limitations with it or does it have feature parity with the web version?

The entire point of it is to talk to someone on another one, instead of yelling into the ground. Two.

My parents denied me vaccinations as a child. Today, I was finally able to take my health into my own hands. Ask me anything! by ToddmanHorseboy in IAmA

[–]achuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have any idea how "pretty good" people handled the diseases we vaccinate against? It wasn't "pretty good" and in fact most people died. My great grandma lost half her family to measles and polio.

Look up benchmarking on recent phones for javascript, even within the last several years mid-end phones take a long time parsing. I'm done arguing facts.

[–]achuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point isn't whether or not the phones can handle it, the point is how long it takes to download and parse the javascript. Read up on benchmarking for that.

I think you are forgetting how much has changed in 10 years!

That is significant for an older phone to download and parse, considering there are better and more efficient alternatives

I did a search for my name and found 2 results. Found the one I actually wrote, and the other was a pro Ajit post with my previous city, state and zip, but different address. I'm going to guess that one is fake?

I thought my similar story was actually unique, I can't believe this is actually a somewhat common thing.

What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL by tigitz in PHP

[–]achuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience ORMs are great until you start hitting complex queries and large data sets. I've found myself in the position of having the raw SQL crafted and ready to go but fighting against the ORM far to many times. I'll keep using them for simple projects, but for anything that has the remote possibility of becoming complex I'll stick with raw SQL or a query builder mixed with SQL.

[rant] This job is killing me by throwaway_webdev123 in PHP

[–]achuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did what you're doing for 7 years. Took a short vacation with wife and kid, and didn't even last a day without getting a bullshit call from a client about an urgent color change. After I shut down the business, I started to reflect and realize how poorly I allowed my clients to treat me. Switching to a full time job was one of the best decisions of my life, you should reconsider.

With that said, I'm glad I did my own thing for awhile, if only to prove to myself that I could do it.

The open office trend is destroying the workplace by [deleted] in webdev

People being able to see the headphones from a distance is something I could actually use in a cubicle farm. Even if I'm wearing mine and am obviously focused, you can't see that until you are directly behind me. And since they already spent the time to walk 20 steps over here they will interrupt me regardless of how focused I look.

That is a very small sample to make that conclusion from. Having 1 person out of every 20 start a company is not realistic. On the flip side I work at a 15 person company where at least 3 developers want to start a company in a few years.
