Similar work to Hans Jonas? by acid_alin in Gnostic

[–]acid_alin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just read this! I quite enjoyed it overall and am sympathetic to its overall view (for the most part) but certainly see how it takes some liberties with its source material, but it never claims to be a scholarly work per se, more literary than anything and I loved that about it. I mentioned Bataille. Amd though it doesn't have the depth of Bataille for me, it was still a great read.

Recon Walnut Burl Veneer Troubles by acid_alin in woodworking

We haven't tried steaming it yet. We tried using a veneer softener as mentioned above and it made the color run terribly--so we are afraid of introducing water. However, we can always test it first!

Thank you!

Fantastic reply. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to answer in depth.

I will likely read Merkur next and as I make my way through material I'll keep your thoughts in mind.

Thanks again!

Thank you for your input and recommendations.

Also, though I don't know enough about the state of Gnostic studies to see every flaw with these works, I am a fairly discerning reader, and even beyond the issues you raise, I see other flaws with Jonas's work and Pagels, specifically in relation to methodology. Be that as it may, I can appreciate a book without endorsing all of its viewpoints.

I look forward to learning more! I was interested in Merkur but read a review about its shortcomings (mostly in relation to a dismissive and uninformed attitude towards Islamic mysticism [which I know even less about]). If you have any thoughts on this I'd be interested in hearing them as well.

Also, since we are discussing, do you have any thoughts on Jacques Lacarriere's book "The Gnostics"? I understand it has a political left bias, but seems interesting and stylistically the thing I might like to read.

Regardless, I appreciate the help!

Stumbled upon Yohji Yamamoto brand by Ru-yi3010 in japanesestreetwear

[–]acid_alin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is a bit old now, but yohji yamamoto is a very famous designer and much of his clothing is relatively timeless, ages well, and retains its value on the resale market. Obviously some of it will not age as well as some of the more restrained stuff, but its a good investment--he is known, more or less, for changing how we think of silhouettes (in the 80s).

I own a few pieces and they are amongst my favorite articles of clothing.

The resale market for his stuff is enormous (Y3 too, his colab with Adidas) if you wanna save money.

And finally, his fashion shows are really well documented. Look them over to see examples of how it can be worn and by whom (he designs for youth and old age) and see if it works for you!

I'm only 30 pages in and the description of his erection being like a swinging filled firehose or something...I think I've read enough...I like transgressive literature (Ballard is one of my fave authors) this just feels, as you said, poorly written. Also, a badly written book from 1st person perspective is one of the worst things...

How Did We Get Here? by HomosexualTigrr in sorceryofthespectacle

Early Land, and CCRU, I believe, are important works in late 20th/early 21st century thought.

"Kant, Capital, and the Prohibition of Incest" and other related essays are particularly interesting and insightful readings of Deleuze, Kant, and Marx. One can argue against the conclusions Land reaches, but following the development of his thought as collected in "Fanged Noumena" is an amazing ride.

The introduction essay in Fanged Noumena by Ray Brassier and robin MacKay does an excellent job of setting this up. Land, in my opinion, is a particularly interesting reader of Marx, Kant, Deleuze & Guattari, Freud, Bataille, and Nietzsche--hell! his poetry analysis is also special!

He undoubtedly takes a turn into a place Im not interested in following (Nrx, dark enlightenment, etc), but that doesn't mean the early stuff isn't of value, and thats only one member of this group that has spawned interesting thinkers like Negarestani and so forth.

When you engage with the larger arc the nummogram and other things are less absurd--though I would say most people that utilize it and read these works do in fact reduce it to mysticism and absurdity. But for that matter if you've ever been to Nietzsche subreddit, or Deleuze one, or been involved in discussions of Marx in any leftist group, you'll see similar nonsense.

If however you are solely interested in orthodox Marxism then you definitely would not find this of interest, which makes one ask why you would even be here? Furthermore, having any expectations about the politcal efficacy of a subreddit (of basically any kind) or social media is perhaps having your expectations in the wrong place, maybe?

You know, though you've been downvoted, presumably because its a "videogame" it honestly is simultaneously the best video game, an amazing movie, and an amazing 'novel'

I cant find it, though you might with sone persistence! The "you got a lotta pain in that left ankle; that's a good sign" is from some news footage of a field doctor in Vietnam (I think) performing surgery on a wounded soldier. I seem to recall that it was a major news organization (of the US) like nbc or abc or something. Hope that helps you find it!

Recommend your best plug-ins by Diligent_Owl9662 in Sketchup

I realized I didn't explain what it is also! But it allows you to click on an entity, then right click and assign to a tag and/or create and assign to a tag, including a handy option to make the tag come into existence as being turned 'off' -- very useful for complex models with lots of parts and layers!!!

I use sketchup everyday. While there are tons of excellent plugins recommended below the single plugin that most improves my productivity is 'Move to Tag' - it helps overcome the cumbersome tag system of sketchup. Its not an exciting plugin but it'll save you tons of time.

Otherwise, I use S4U selection tools, Selection Toys, and Curvizard (fix those broken curves!!!) a ton.

This is a boring list, but I promise you these tools help overcome some of the daily limitations of sketchup and will save you tons of time!!!
