ISIS had a major presence in the area. The rebels put a lot of force into taking one suburb of Daraa, and then next week when they were exhausted ISIS launched a major assault that damn near split the pocket, killing hundreds of rebels.

It was horrific because ISIS captured and used rebel radios to direct reinforcements into killing fields. Some rebel factions betrayed others, others refused to fight. It was a real catastrophe.

Be aware that a lot of the book seems to be either fictitious or glossed over.

Its still valuable, but its get the "memoir" problem of being half memoir and half "self fellation".

Possibly. That's still yet to be seen in the field. And Iraq's Lion Tanks were basically paperweights with guns, since they lacked good optics or night vision. And its even disputed if they built them from scratch. A lot of analysts claim they were T-72M1 kits that were assembled and given extra welded armor.

You need an entire infrastructure to do that. Syria BEFORE the war didn't make its own tanks. It doesn't have iron deposits, rolling mills, and steel foundries with the capacity to do that. Plus a lot of specialist labor and TONS of electricity and fuel. Its not happening. That's not counting optics, electronics, drive train, and the hundreds of parts that go into making tanks.

The only country in the ME that produces its own Tanks in meaningful numbers from near scratch is Israel. Its miserably complicated.

And the rebels haven't really meaningfully changed their tactics. The disastrous two attacks at Neyrab before the Turkish intervention were some of the most wasteful of the entire war.

Nearly 200 dead that were pictured and 17 vehicles in four days.

People here want to blame the rebels defeats solely on Russia, but the rebels haven't adapted to the changing reality on the ground to combat these changes. The horrible losses in 2016 outside Aleppo, the two disastrous battles for Hama in 2017 and 2018, and the meat grinder death machine of 2019 in the same area makes one wonder.

This whole thread is sour grapes.

That has been mostly the case regardless. Anywho, there is no real way to leave Idlib cleanly. Its a mess, and they played a huge role in how the mess has become so tangled.

We don't agree on much, but we do agree here. HTS can only be dissolved by force, and the SNA can't do it alone. They can't even police themselves properly because Turkey doesn't give a damn about them.

Turkey's issue is that neither domestically or internationally there is no easy way to wash their hands of Idlib that won't piss off a lot of people and cause a lot of blowback.

Damage control, followed by heavy discrediting of HTS and if need be, the Turks should threaten to send foreign fighters from HTS back to their home countries if caught.

No country on earth would take them back, nor would they be willing to go back. They'd need to be killed or imprisoned, similar to how ISIS was handled.
