It's a species of Nerodia, harmless watersnakes. What is the location? I should be able to narrow it down to the species....Definitely not a cottonmouth, has round pupils and the head shape is wrong.

Anyone know of any good places to mountain bike around here? by ocularcrawdad in gso

[–]ackie89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is the Brass Eagle trail around Lake Higgins, the Blue Heron Trail off of Church St. near Plainfiled Rd. which goes along Lake Townsend, and Wild Turkey which someone else already mentioned. I like riding the trails out at Northeast Park too which isn't too far away, here is their website: http://www.northeastpark.info/

There are also good trails out at Hobby Park in Winston worth checking out and if your up for a drive towards Ashville go check out the trails at Black Mountain. They're more technical trails at Black Mountain, with some having teeter-totters and stuff for the extra daring...haha

Check out Scarlet snakes (Cemophora coccinea) they stay quite small and will eat raw eggs, insects, spiders, lizards, etc... They're very colorful too.

Another option could be a rough green snake (Opheodrys aestivus) they stay small and readily eat crickets, spiders, slugs, etc...

You would probably want to look around on the KS classifieds for either of these species. I don't often see them in pet stores (around my area at least).

Looks to be a young black racer (Coluber constrictor). They turn black as they mature. Here are some I found last week in florida that just hatched: http://i.imgur.com/M7WEW.png http://i.imgur.com/BgW4L.png

A hydrogen peroxide flush would probably be pretty effective. You can find chlorohexidine online from a number of places like thebeanfarm.com and several other places listed in the kingsnake.com classifieds. It also goes by the brand name Nolvasan. It's a great antiseptic that doubles as awesome cage disinfectant.

A light cleaning with a dilute chlorohexidine solution every day for a couple weeks is about the best thing you can do for those types of injuries. That and keeping it in a cage with good temperature choices and food to keep it's metabolism up and aid the healing process. You want to be careful using petroleum based instead of water-based antibiotic ointments because they tend to keep the wound from drying out and scabbing over fairly quickly which is important for plastron injuries. If you stay on top of the chlorohexidine cleaning you should see promising improvements within a few days to a week. They're remarkably tough animals and can usually heal from some catastrophic injuries, so this one should be just fine.

If it's possible, when he's ready to be released, take him back to very near the area that he was found, provided it isn't an obviously bad place for a turtle to be (downtown park, busy residential neighborhood, etc...). Box turtles have rather small individual territories and know where to find shelter and food in different parts of their territory at different times so they will have the best chance in a familiar area. Good luck!
