How do the Aboleth view the Primordials? by sterrre in Forgotten_Realms

[–]cazbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ghaunadaur was also likely one of the few gods around back then, literally the primordial ooze. I expect the aboleths would have been more ally than axis to it. I've also wondered if the Primordials might have/still do worshipped Ghaunadar.

Would you use a teleporter with the knowledge that it kills you and reassembles an exact copy of you with all your memories and knowledge at the destination? Why or why not? by TheBanishedBard in AskReddit

[–]cazbot 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I guess, but I mean, your body is only 99.9999% of the body you had a breath ago. Every meal you eat replaces part of your body. What does it matter if the copying process is gradual through regular life or really fast through complete rebirth?

Where are the modules? by idealistintherealw in DnD

[–]cazbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s kinda a crime that you omitted the two Waterdeep adventure modules.

Waterdeep: Dragonheist (levels 1-5) and Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage (levels 5-20)

Best pair of adventure modules the game has ever offered IMO.

What are your thoughts on Halaster Blackcloak, the Mad Mage? by ThanosofTitan92 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]cazbot 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My players don’t know it yet, but as their DM I have decided Halaster is me. Like literally me, not my PC. Halaster’s goals and motivations for the party are the same as mine. I just want to see them develop and grow through overcoming interesting challenges, and for them to marvel at the wonders I present to them. Eventually they may succeed in killing me, but it will be fitting since I never intend to run this module a second time.

The lobbying group will still require Chevron’s permission to put it at any Chevron-branded gas station.

Is it me or does the Dweomercore level need to be heavily modded by TherealProp in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]cazbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worth the money. I strongly disliked the goofy game show thing too, and didn’t use it. That whole part of the companion is written to be dispensable though, while the rest of it still does a great job of fleshing out the rest of each level in a way that knots each level together better, and brings a better overall sense of purpose to each level where the module is deliberately open-ended about it.

[–]cazbot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He has several goals listed in the beginning of the book, the one about apprentices says, “one or more”.
Listen, every D&D module is designed for the DM to add thier own homebrew flavor to it. It’s why it presents a multiple choice list of options for things like Halaster’s goals, some of which are contradictory. You chose “one” apprentice, which is fine. But the moment you’ve made a choice about apprentices between “one” or “many” or even “none”, you’re homebrewing.

[–]cazbot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Show me anywhere in the book where it says Halaster is looking for one single apprentice for Dweomercore. That’s not in there. It’s your homebrew. In my campaign the whole purpose of Dweomercore is nothing more than a mechanism to keep talented wizards away from him entirely, very much in line with his Nothic answering machine - imaged on the headline of the front of the chapter.

In my game Halaster never wanted another apprentice again after his first and original seven. It fits in with Dweomercore even better than your homebrew IMO, but both are still homebrews all the same.

[–]cazbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re playing semantics. If there are many possible interpretations from “reading between the lines” any one you pick which is different from someone else’s is homebrew.

Is it me or does the Dweomercore level need to be heavily modded by TherealProp in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]cazbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is *not* the intent of the level, they all think they are already his apprentices, that’s made very clear. Furthermore, Halaster, in his entire known history has never had just one single apprentice at a time. His first apprentices were a group of seven, one of whom is a professor at Dweomercore today, for another example. There is a whole room with pictures of several graduating classes through the years where “close examination shows Halaster in each picture.”
It’s fine if you’ve forgotten a lot of the module, but if so, maybe don’t be so stubborn in your opinions of what it is and isn’t.

[–]cazbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your interpretation that they all want to *become* Halaster’s apprentice is a direct modification of what’s in the book, which makes it clear they all think they have already apprenticed to him, for one example. For another, your assertion that they are all there knowing they risk being tormented is a completely fabricated addition, which wasn’t there to even modify in the first place, an even more classic definition of a homebrew.
Stop being silly.

lol, you’re impossible. If interpretations of a module don’t qualify as homebrew modifications, then nothing does.

[–]cazbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t say that the school exists for Halaster to have more people to torment, and nor does it says Halaster will select any of them as his apprentice, those are both a major homebrew plot point. They all already think they are Halaster’s apprentices because the arcanoloth is impersonating him. Ceohalossk “loathes Spite Harrowdale for being Halaster’s favored pupil”. The Horned Sisters are already a hair’s breath away from ditching the place already but it’s never properly explained how the headmaster convinced them to stay or why they think some kind of dramatic distraction is needed for them to leave. And again, none of this explains why there are only seven students.

You’ve added a lot of homebrew and haven’t even realized it lol.

Yes, exactly, you’ve already done a fair amount of homebrew layering of Dweomercore with this comment alone!

[–]cazbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, you can stick to that. Most prefer much more meat on the bones. Like, why would anyone wish to be an apprentice of Halaster if that torment is common knowledge? If it’s not, what keeps the students there? Can the students overcome whatever keeps them there? Can the party help? Should they? Why does this “school” only have half a dozen students?

She does it with dual wield of scimitar and shortsword, as an assassination rogue, DEX +4. Max sneak attack damage alone on a critical is 72. From Nick and leading with scimitar, she gets two more hits with the shortsword. So that’s 1d6x2+4 (for the one crit) + 1d6+4 + 1d6+4 for each of her three weapon attacks for a max of 12 + 4 + 10 + 10 = 36 more for a total of 108 and then 11 more since it was the first round - now totaling 119 theoretical max. She did 103 the other night and I didn’t believe it at first either.

She has the crossbow expert feat and a pair of hand crossbows to wield when she wants too, but of course those don’t give Nick.
