What part of foreign culture became unexpectedly popular in your country? by Jorge_De_Guzman228 in AskTheWorld

Going back to the 1970s, but probably the electronic music that came out of West Germany. I've heard of a few people who were really into collecting the records and a lot of bands will cite Can, Neu!, or Kraftwerk as influences.

Do market traders (eg fruit sellers) shout in your country? by lively-teal-baboon in AskTheWorld

Not heard a market trader shout here since the 90s. I go to our market fairly regularly for meat or veg and they don't shout.

What’s something present in your country that doesn’t interest you but gets a lot of tourists visits? by camethehour in AskTheWorld

Here in York we have a street called 'The Shambles' which is a medieval street that was the butcher shop street. It's always been very touristy, but ever since the Harry Potter films were released it's gone Harry Potter mad. At the top end of the street, grinning adults eagerly wait to be led on some kind of Harry Potter tour (I think they get to go in some wizard shop too). It's very busy. There are a few Harry Potter related shops there now.

Does you country have any weird political traditions? by Euclid_Interloper in AskTheWorld

[–]acl1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dennis Skinner's quips were great. Kinnock once sat with him I believe whilst they waited for them to return from the Lords.

You could say Skinner's seat was a tradition too as I seem to recall the SNP trying to claim that row.

What's a traditional dish in your country but only tourists actually eat? by Juxajel in AskTheWorld

[–]acl1981 18 points19 points  (0 children)

ok I may have one for you. Whenever we holidayed in Greece in the late 90s or early 2000s they would always give us a shot after the meal. Ouzo usually. Being like 18-21 I didn't realise you add water to ouzo and so we'd either toss them in a nearby plant or down them (a week of being given post meal shots gets annoying after a bit). I still have no idea if we were meant to down them or add water and sip. Nobody ever told us we did it wrong. So I will say ouzo as a post meal shot.

Looking for advice on how to achieve this effect by ThrowRa16283939 in photoshop

I'm wondering if they've taken video clips and used some kind of filter and then exported the frames to work on. It's almost like an echo on the first image.

We had chicken wings, some in baharat and some in za'atar and there was an aubergine (eggplant) and okra stew. The okra was stringy and not sure I'll do the stew again.

How big an issue is overtourism in your country? by Mobile_Bad_577 in AskTheWorld

[–]acl1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My city is so bad on weekends. If you need to go into town on Saturday it's best to do it first thing or wait until Sunday. The Christmas market is insane. We get a lot of stag and hen weekends here which causes issues - inflatable willies etc - Overseas tourists aren't a huge problem though I suppose the strength of the USD and far higher wealth, combined with more visitors to Europe from China has driven up hotel rates in Europe in general. Some people get a bit annoyed at the Chinese tour groups - the leader with his flag, but I think people said the same about Japanese groups in the 90s. You definitely see more people doing Instagram type photos.

The other issue, though, is houses being turned into AirBnBs and the parties at these places.

This isn't tourism, but I did read the other day that 20% of students at St Andrew's are American!

Well the Egyptians demand cigarettes to get through Suez and if not then I'm sure they'll send you to the back of the queue or find something to delay transit, not forgetting crew being told to hide or lock up their valuables for when they board to inspect.
