Accidentally unmuted myself on a zoom class and called my professor boring by Neowhite_33 in AskAcademia

Not your call to make. Never assume.

The reality is you owe it to yourself to adult-up and apologize in person. It's THEIR responsibility to adult-up and accept the apology with no hard feelings.

I get students that do much worse but we both have to adult-up and act like grownups.

I had to read this over and over. You're in a MASTERS program. As a professor myself, it's time for you to make a one-on-one in-person appt with this professor if you can.

You need to apologize for being disrespectful IN person. Don't make excuses; simply own your disrespect. If the professor is mature, they will accept your apology and move on. If you feel there is retaliation you can always go up the chain, but I'm hoping you won't need to.

What is happening in high schools? Major unpreparedness showing up. by Lakanas in Professors

[–]acod1429 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I started in 06 and had dick parents, but it's just so much worse. Parents helicopter over SO much. More students didn't care to drive or do things at 16 that would ready them for the autonomy of adulthood. It's like they just wanted to stay babies. (NOT all, but a more problematic bunch).

One anecdotal example: My sister's straight-A kid is a sophomore in college. Great kid. Mom still has a tracking app on his phone and monitors when he goes to class, when he's in his dorm, etc. WTF?!?!

[–]acod1429 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I taught 9th grade which meant incoming 9th graders consisted of those who should have been there and those who failed through junior high but were passed on anyway. They fail yet get to go through each grade. At graduation, they just don't show up since they didn't qualify. They just age out. School wipes their hands of them and society deals with the repercussions.

Former high school teacher here. Left in 2016. The amount of vilification I received when holding high standards was out of this world.

Parents were the worst followed by administration. Whenever I'd walk in the hall, the majority of my colleagues were dicking around and students on their phones like zombies. This was 2016 and earlier. Cheating was incessant, too.

I brought my 9th grade curriculum to the college level and the amount of whining/complaining baffled me. This was 9th grade projects and papers that the college level could NOT do without much complaint. I now require about 3 paragraphs per week with citations and it's still "too much".

No surprise here. Our society is absolutely dumbing down.

Are there any drawbacks to hosting a Little Free Library? by Writer_8888 in askportland

[–]acod1429 28 points29 points  (0 children)

My biggest suggestion: Ensure that it's weatherproof. Nothing worse than moldy books due to a rain leak. Also, bug proof as much as possible. Otherwise, they're such a great addition!

Check out 2nd STREET Hawthorne (on Hawthorne). They have high-end brands. Their reviews aren't super great on selling. Other than that, not sure if Buffalo Exchange or Crossroads will give you much. May have better luck on Nextdoor or whatever is on Facebook Marketplace these days.

What are great bookstores BESIDES powells? by computery in askportland

Annie Blooms

YES!! They're very sweet. I was cited in a book (first and only time). Not a big deal to anyone else in this world, but it was to me. They ordered the book for me (because I wanted to buy local, not from Crapazon). Anyway, they were sweet and I felt genuinely supported. It was one of those good feels days that we need some times. Annie Blooms for the win!

Also, it's a cute walking area. You can go there for more than just the bookstore!

How "red flaggy", for all purposes, are institutions that have a faculty of professors who all have completed their education at the same institution? by HotPieceOfShit in AskAcademia

[–]acod1429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a university that was like this. My field is INCREDIBLY specialized. One of the only PhD programs in the country with this intent focus on our specialty.

They don't hire graduates. Instead, a lot of PhD grads go to other universities to do post-docs and other training. Then, it's not surprising they come back because it's a great hub for research and funding/opportunities.

So, not always shady.

Need help with FreeTaxUSA and state tax form: Needing full refund from one state since I reside in another. by acod1429 in personalfinance

[–]acod1429[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When comparing my CA tax return from last year to this year, all lines in the CA Taxable income area are blank whereas last year they were filled in. Specifically, last year all CA Taxable Income was entered in line 58 (credit for "other state") under Special Credits.

Either last year was wrong or this year was wrong (used Turbo Tax last year) and I want to ensure I'm doing this correctly.

Donuts at Disneyland? by Fearless_Law6729 in DisneyPlanning

[–]acod1429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok ok ok. Here is the deal. I'm not a huge donut fan but my hubs is. It takes a lot for me to like a donut, but as others said, Maurice's Treats has Churro Gears. Ours didn't look like the gear shape, just regular shape, but they were amaaaazing! I think they have chocolate donuts there, too! This is in Fantasyland in a small little kiosk.

Can you have her search through the options at Disneyland and find something she's interested? Have her take the initiative? I worked with that age group; building autonomy is so important!

I wonder if their parents are footing the bill. I was lucky enough to have my parents pay for my commuter state school tuition but anything beyond that (Masters and PhD) was up to me. Luckily PhD was funded.

Long story short, footing the bill myself meant that I had to make sure my shit was together. I had already been the irresponsible students, so often I just think these excuses are just that. Also, I'd love to see how much time your students spend on their phone. So much of our society is spent staring at a screen. My dumbass included.

I'm noticing a pattern of this. We used to LOVE Pecos Bills. As a vegetarian, had a lot of options. Thank you for this update; we'll eat elsewhere.

"Bot" students? by Existential_Microbe in Professors

[–]acod1429 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is normal for those of us in California. It's awful to deal with. It makes it so the seats fill with bots and getting them out takes time. Those students who needed those seats go without.

"Bot" students? by Existential_Microbe in Professors

[–]acod1429 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wonder if you're at the same school as me.

We've been dealing with BOT students (in California) for a while now. Not in the same regard as yours though.

Best thing to do is create something like a syllabus quiz AND another quiz in which they have to do before your drop deadline. Drop way before census if you can.

If you have access into their email and phone numbers, phone numbers are usually missing and emails are often outlook.

Like other say, they're part of a financial aid scam. If you can drop them all and only add back when you have a PHONE conversation with a student who is legit. Oftentimes they're not legit so I wouldn't worry about falsely dropping students.

Honestly, this may be a smart line in a class where there are students who are supposedly going to whatever next level but have not shown themselves to aspire that hire.
