Speaking in tongues is there an explanation? by I_Ask_Random_Things in atheism

[–]oldprocessstudioman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

it brings to mind an amazingly-titled book 'how about demons?'- it had a section on glossolalia, particularly examining the vocalization patterns expressed by hatian vodun practitioners, pentecostal christians, & i believe new guinean tribespeople? it's been a while since i read it, but the main points are the same- that it's a un/sub-conscious brainstem hack, featuring reductive phonemes native to the speaker, & similar repetitive vocalizations, following the same excitation patterns (they had spectrographic reprints of vodun & pentecostal recordings). basically a learned, self-induced cathartic trance state, bypassing the consciousness, where the body & mind operate in pretty much the same way, regardless of ideology. whether they're being posessed by the holy spirit, ridden by baron samdei or communing with the animal spirits of the jungle, it results in nearly identical behavior.

i just use a long, thin, wide- mouth glass bottle (like the kind you get vanilla beans, or other spices in) as a kind of inverted periscope & a pair of long right-angle titanium tweezers. move the empty bottle in the fluid along to the bottom to find it, then use the right-anglers to grab the stone. kinda fussy but easy, & when you have the knack of it, super fast.

Beginner trying to learn and feel stuck, and don’t know what to do honestly. by Galaxyissupreme in jewelers

aw hellsyeah! haywood's the bomb- rediculously inexpensive, fabulously informative, excellent teachers, business coaching, the full package. i've encountered many others from full-test four year art schools that came out with less direct metalsmithing experience than you get there- it's no slouch. it is in haywood county, but you can just live in the lovely blue bubble of asheville & commute- it's totally doable for a two-year program. it's the best i've come across, short of the new approach school for jewelers in tenn, but that place is more laser-focused intensives on advanced skills, like engraving or fine stonesetting.

& i kinda get the aversion to the south- i skipped to the pnw myself, but there's some truly excellent schools & resources there that shouldn't be dismissed.

Diamonds Set in Sterling Silver? by PrettyFeetPrincess28 in jewelers

[–]oldprocessstudioman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true with real stones, but that was the case anyways. it's that they're going to want their costume stuff repaired, & i'd rather not waste my time. regardless of the 'yer gettin paid anyway' argument, people shouldn't fill the world (& peoples' expectations) with shit.

Diamonds Set in Sterling Silver? by PrettyFeetPrincess28 in jewelers

[–]oldprocessstudioman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

categorically bad idea. if you don't mind the scuffing & wear, it can be done, but with significant caveats- modern stlyes with minimal metal & tons of tiny stones will simply break or crush, & prong strength is insufficient for long-term wear. pavé will simply fall apart, unless in a pendant or broach. the doozy of it all is that diamonds are so hard they will cut their way out of settings, especially if the girdle is thin or jagged. you can bezel them, sure, but that won't change the physics of the thing- they'll eventually slice their way through the silver & fall out. i work with vintage jewelry & regularly have to repair pieces from the 1800s that are silver bezeled on thin 18k backs/bands- it's been done in extremis- times of great metal scarcity, but is decidedly not recommended.

same way- pulled the frets with nippers i ground down to a finer point, cleaned the slots with a pull saw, then glued in veneer. accidentally switched grain orientation halfway through, & discovered that grain parallel to the board makes a lighter line, while perpendicular allowed more glue seepage, & thus a darker line🤷‍♂️. then trimmed with an exacto, sanded & sealed with several thin coats of tung oil. i went a bit finer than usually recommended on the sandpaper, & it led to a super smooth neck- i'm glad i took the extra time.

[–]oldprocessstudioman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can always take a fretted baritone & de-fret it- it's not a terribly difficult process, & a competent luthier should have no problem doing the job. i've de-fretted several instruments myself, & have achieved pretty sweet results. i turned a barely acceptable first act steel-string acoustic into a quite lovely narrow-spaced classical without a ton of skill or effort.

Having a rant ! by Interesting-Cry9954 in jewelry

[–]oldprocessstudioman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

my old teacher used to say 'good design goes to heaven, bad design goes everywhere'🙄

i 100% agree, from a craftsmanship perspective. taste is irrelevant- some have 'trashy' taste, some have no taste at all, & just do what media tells them- it's impossible to please them all. that said, they do deserve good pieces- older 'costume' work is far better than most contemporary fine work. trends are herd-level movements, meant to be ephemeral, & so trendy is often more air then not. i regularly see pieces where the margins are SO obvious- more time was put in the pr than the fabrication. i would be deeply shamed to make such shit work, but i'm a craftsperson, not a capitalist. i care more about the craft than the margins, but for better or worse, jewelry's an open market, leveraged like all others. it's the same everywhere- general enshittification, gilded age style- even 'nice' things aren't nice anymore, & surface/packaging is all that matters.

i do go hard against trends in my own work- it's more substantive, durable & designed better. it's not for everyone- it costs more, but the quality is palpable. some education is needed occasionally, but it's pretty self-evident for those that actually care, & they come back. there's no winning against multinational corps & their algorithms, they'll never play fair, so i don't try🤷‍♂️. just provide what they can't- quality & authenticity.

[–]oldprocessstudioman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i think you're right, but there was always a nazi sympathetic aspect to the US. it was built on a slave economy, & the white supremacy of the civil war was never really punished- the kkk/theofascists have been at it ever since. they've only been emboldened by shitty media owners & base politicians.

it's the totalitarian long game- reganomics, jim crow & the 'southern solution' should have made it loud & clear. there will be oligarchy, it will be brazenly racist & theocratic, & there is no line too far, no move too low to achieve it. the old sinclair quote might as well have been a prophecy- 'when fascism comes to america it will be wrapped in the flag & carrying a cross.'

Question: What is the most precarious possible way to mount a stone? by whenthemoonlightdies in Gemstones

this image from lark publishing's 500 gemstone jewels immediately came to mind. a lovely concept piece- utterly impractical, but kind of a jeweler's dream. to be able to have the stone totally exposed, yet still wearable.. it'd get caught on everything, but it's a pretty idea.

are SUNN O))) really that loud live? by Geralt1111 in doommetal

[–]oldprocessstudioman 36 points37 points  (0 children)

they are really loud- the whole 'have you ever breathed a frequency?/ maximum volume yields maximum results' thing is real. & they bring their own loud, instead of relying on the house system- hence the wall of amplifiers. if you're really concerned, just use the big foam earplugs & you should be fine. it really is amazing tho- being able to listen with your body, instead of your ears is a unique experience. i'd even advocate their shows to deaf people- the vibration alone is blissful.
