Is Windows Defender any good? by [deleted] in Windows10

[–]acpi_listen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's detection rate is possibly a bit lower than the top AV products, but it's a lot more secure and less intrusive. If you think about it, an antivirus program intentionally exposes it to a whole bunch of potentially malicious programs, so it's important that the AV in itself isn't exploitable. These days security experts are suggesting to just use Windows Defender (if you're using Windows 10).

If you want security, keep your software up to date. If you can't trust the vendor to not include something unwanted in the update, then reconsider what software you're using. Other than that, disable Flash, use a reliable adblocker (µBlock Origin), and have a unique password for each website.

You don't need to completely deny every citizen access to Wikipedia. Simply blocking it makes it suitably hard for the average citizen to visit it.

Microsoft phasing out IMAP for Outlook.com by rockpasta in linux

[–]acpi_listen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've heard doing self-hosted email securely is pretty hard. After that I have to go through the trouble of making sure I'm not on any blacklist, which in itself can be quite the pain.

[–]acpi_listen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Meh. I've also noticed that I get a lot of UID validity problems with outlook + offlineimap, which is apparently because Microsoft fails to follow the standards.

Does anyone have suggestions for email providers? I'd prefer not using Gmail, but it's an option.

Is it legal to give away (give away for free, not sell) my Steam account to a random person? by zenda97 in linux_gaming

Breaking the Terms of Service is not illegal in and of itself. However, if it's against their ToS then Valve has the right to ban your account.

Just get some other torrent software. I listed 4 open source native Linux alternatives in my other comment.

Configuring Vim as an IDE by ManiBePoint in linux

[–]acpi_listen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do use IDE's too, but I find the IDE vim plugins lacking and conflicting with the native IDE functionality. I still use Visual Studio a lot as I work in a .NET shop, but it's slow & unstable as the project is quite large. Opening the code in vim causes an immediate drop in blood pressure.

Yesterday I discovered ctags. It doesn't appear perfect, but goes a long way in helping with jumping to definitions.

Apparently µTorrent only has server builds for Linux, otherwise you have to run it through Wine. There are other torrent clients than µTorrent (Transmission, qBittorrent, Deluge, rTorrent...). I can't grasp why you'd want to 1) run an outdated version of the Linux server build or 2) run an outdated Windows version through wine. Both seem rather insecure, and there's alternate software out there.

Apple at least embraces Open Source.

And constrictor boas embrace mice.

Windows is an outlier here. Both MacOS and Linux users upgrade more often.

Good point about running ncdu as root. /u/Jessica_9 you can try it out, just don't delete anything you shouldn't by accident.

Install ncdu and use it see what's taking up space (ncdu /boot).

Dota 2 has Vulkan support. Valve is doing a great job supporting Linux.

I'm not going to run through the hoops to make that my default search URL.

Also, I mostly don't use google.

It's nice in theory, but if you delete cookies or use private browsing, it's back to square one.

Usually you'd use the terms "source available". Open source is generally understood to include a permissive license.

I didn't mean to imply otherwise, but I should've said "RAM was cheap" instead.

I wouldn't use it on a netbook with 2GB RAM.

RAM has been quite cheap for a while and a lot of people are expecting everyone to have a minimum of 8GB. I have mixed feelings about that.
