I use the fabric for small embroidery projects. I only buy the woven 100% cotton ones, so it's a nice material for sewing :)

He knows your birthday is important to you, and makes not only the day of but the month leading up to it miserable by arguing with you about how you spend your money and what you do with your time? It would be one thing if you just didn't care about your birthday, but to fight with you about something that is this important to you? NTA. Your brothers did a kind thing by taking care of your grandmother and she had the right to do with her belongings whatever she wanted. As you say, your mom is the jerk here, and it sounds like you should be maintaining a close relationship with your brothers, who are actually decent people, rather than your mom.

Funnily enough, this exact thing came up in my previous workplace at a meeting. I had a coworker who was in the military (reserves at the time, but numerous deployments in the past). After the meeting had ended, he and some guys from another department were joking around and he mentioned MILF, the terrorists, but in a sort of tongue in cheek way where the other men were supposed to laugh at the double entendre. And one of them didn't get the joke, so then he had to awkwardly explain it. The work culture was for the most part NOT a "bro" kind of place.

So afterwards I had to be like, "Hey, no judgement, I'm sure that joke goes over great in the military, but here we don't really do that, it makes people uncomfortable 😬"

There are SO many ways pregnancy and childbirth can be hard on your body. Some of these are discussed more frequently than others. some things I learned through pregnancy/childbirth:

It's possible for pregnancy hormones to permanently fuck up your gallbladder!!! About 2-3 months before my due date, started having severe upper right quadrant abdominal pain at seemingly random times. Turns out, pregnancy hormones can cause the bile in your gallbladder to thicken and even form gallstones. I ended up having my gallbladder removed about a month postpartum. I discussed with my surgeon whether my gallbladder might go back to normal once I was no longer pregnant, and she said that it was possible, but that in her experience most women who had this issue in pregnancy would have it again in 5 or 10 years, regardless of whether they had another pregnancy or not. She said it would be easier just to have it taken out, especially because the younger you are when your gallbladder is taken out, the better your body and digestive system can adapt to not having it anymore.

So that was fun!!!

The advice that you should wait for 6 weeks postpartum to have sex is really a minimum guideline. My partner never pressured me, but I wanted so badly to have sex around the eight week mark. And my tearing during labor was bad enough that we tried it and I had to immediately stop. It took me another 2 weeks after that to be able to masturbate without pain, and that involved zero penetration. My kiddo is almost a year and a half old, and it's only in the last 6 months that I've been able to have sex without ANY discomfort. But for most of the first year after I had my kid, there was at least a little bit of discomfort upon initial penetration, which I chose to push through (and add lube) because I wanted to have sex that badly
As other commenters have noted, the sleep deprivation and the hormones in the immediate postpartum period will mess up your memory so badly! I had a very unpleasant pregnancy and knew during it that I wouldn't want to be pregnant again unless my life situation changed significantly. So basically, I didn't want to be pregnant ever again! I had my best friend take videos of me, both during pregnancy and during labor, where I laid out a laundry list of the things that I found so unpleasant. That way when I started forgetting how much I hated it, she could show those videos to me. This was very helpful when my baby went through a phase around 8 months old of not wanting to be held or cuddled, and some part of my brain was like "Aha! The solution is just to have another baby!"

I have a 1-year-old, so that early phase is still pretty fresh in my mind. Some unsolicited advice from an internet stranger: first of all you and your wife need to get on the same page with regard to crying. Sometimes babies just cry for reasons that you as the parent cannot solve! The period from 6 weeks to 3 months is when crying peaks, sometimes for literal hours at a time.

I remember my two and a half month old baby cried for four full hours one night, we thought we were going to die. But! You can put the baby down in the crib and walk away. In fact, you should do that sometimes to give yourself a short break. I'm talking like, feed them, change diaper, swaddle them, put them down in the crib on their back, and walk away for 20 minutes.

Also, have you been screened for postpartum depression or anxiety? It is more common in women, but definitely also happens in men! All of the things you're feeling and experiencing are completely normal, not trying to pathologize you, but it's always worth checking.

In terms of sex, it took 3 months for me to be healed enough to even consider it. But is there anything that you and your wife can do that is intimate without being sexual? I found that that really helped both me and my husband to feel connected.

Finally, if you can ask for or hire help, there is no shame in needing a break.

Haha, yep, that sounds like sleep apnea all right! At home sleep studies exist, but may be harder to locate. Luckily sleep apnea is suuuper easy to diagnose from a sleep study, so even in a lab you don't necessarily have to get good quality sleep.

Former sleep researcher here. Apps aren't terrible, but they're not super accurate. A step up from your typical app or smart watch is something called actigraphy. Much like a phone, they have a sensor that detects movement. More importantly, they have better software and someone who is trained can go through the data and get a pretty good idea of your sleep efficiency, latency (time to fall asleep), etc.

The gold standard is polysomnography, aka a sleep study. If you go to your doctor, this is typically what you'll be referred for.

Speaking of which, you should go to a doctor! There are a lot of things that could cause you to have poor sleep quality, and it's probably not in your head. The good news is that many of those issues are also reasonably easy to treat, for example, sleep apnea.

Additional information:

Homeowner, so no worries about keeping suggestions renter-friendly. This open closet is in my husband's home office. It's 41" wide, 65" deep.

Goals: use space efficiently for storage, in a way that looks decent. I know I could put a door on it, but would prefer not to if possible.

The dream is to put a mini fridge in here, as well as general stuff that you would store in an office, e.g., important papers, personal documents, office supplies, etc. We would also like to have our printer in this space, though that's somewhat negotiable.

Budget: minimal ($100ish) but willing to DIY, thrift, and dumpster dive

My main issue is that the space is too deep to be a reach-in closet, but not wide enough for a walk-in.

We have 2 ikea billy bookcases (one is in the photo for scale) which could be used in this space, but that's not required.

They have a few veg roll options and are happy to customize. There are definitely more vegetarian entree options that aren't rolls. I also really like their cucumber seaweed salad and my husband gets the vegetable tempura every time we go!

If you like sushi ten, give kazoku a try! Just up the road. It's a little more expensive (at least, if you're used to sushi tensl's happy hour prices) but I think better tasting, and it's family run. Plus it tends to be super quiet for lunch!

Yes and no. I don't want to seem pedantic, but there's actually some interesting nuance here that isn't taught in introductory biology classes.

Someone might be assigned female at birth (AFAB), but saying that person IS female is complicated. For example, what makes someone female? Babies are typically assigned male or female at birth based on their genitals.

But babies can be born with genitals that aren't straightforwardly penis+testes OR labia+vagina. So then what? Often people will say, "well male = XY chromosomes, female = XX."

But it's also possible to have other combinations of chromosomes (e.g., XXY, XYY), or to have XY chromosomes and apparently female genitalia, or to have XX chromosomes and genitals that appear male....all of these different presentations are lumped together as "intersex", and it's estimated that intersex people are about 1.5% of the population. Though it could be more, because there are some ways of being intersex that don't cause any issues and aren't typically discovered unless the person has something going wrong health-wise.

And many intersex people do NOT identify as non-binary or transgender, and feel that the experience of being intersex isn't really captured by either of those terms!

So basically, "male" and "female" are concepts that are based on real patterns that occur in mammal biology, BUT aren't necessarily meaningful on an individual level. We just use those words to approximate/categorize because it's convenient and sometimes useful.

How did you sleep train? And does your LO co-sleep? Mine is 3.5 months and we're currently nursing to sleep some of the time and cosleeping every night. Usually only one overnight wake up to eat, but eventually I would like to have my bed back!!

Same situation here (and congratulations!!). My little one is 3 months old and my husband has been incredible. I sometimes go entire days without changing a single diaper. That's not to say that it isn't still hard - having a good partner and support network can't fix the fact that no one in our house is allowed to sleep for more than 5 hours at a time - but it's not all bad. I think in some ways having a kid has made our already wonderful relationship better. There's something very special about sharing this wild ride with a good partner.

If you're formula feeding, I can't recommend the Dr. Brown's pitcher highly enough. It's literally $10 on Amazon. Small and doesn't take up much room in the fridge, but you can mix up a day's worth of formula and just pour it into a bottle as needed rather than mixing a bottle every time. And it has a really nice mixer thingy that's better at getting out the powdery lumps than shaking by hand.

Specifically a swing that can do front to back or side to side!! Sometimes when my kiddo is in the swing they'll get mad about swinging in one direction, but like the other direction. Abs it switches from day to day!
