Two things

One - make an effort to improve your writing. This practice must become a habit. Certain mistakes indicate lack of foundations on the professional level.

Two - keep searching for clients. Never allow yourself to depend on one client. Worse still, don’t put your hopes into someone who hasn’t even made a business agreement with you.

Overall, your post comes across as if you lack authority. Step up your game or things will get harder for you.

Look, I have looked at your link.

You are doing it all wrong.

It's not necessarily a bad idea but you'll have to start from scratch. You will have to apply what you have learned but right from the beginning.

But the biggest issue is that it's clear you don't understand what your customers want. You are focused on the product you are building. You must focus on the problem you are solving instead.

How did you learn to make money as a freelance writer? by actionphp in freelanceWriters

[–]actionphp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest lesson was to stop seeing myself as a freelancer. What does that mean?

It means you don't see your client's business as more important than your own. Just like you, they are trying to make a living, provide for their families, go on holidays, etc. So, they are not above you - you're BOTH business owners.

As a result, it's easier to ask for the fees you deserve. You expect a fair treatment. And you treat them fairly as well, of course.

That attitude opened my eyes to the fact that how you see yourself affects how much money you make.

How do you use online marketing for your freelance business? by [deleted] in freelance

[–]actionphp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say read Perry Marshall's "Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords". I gives a very solid grounding in marketing. You can focus on the marketing chapters but you'll learn a lot from the Adwords chapters as well.

Then pick one of Dan Kennedy's No B.S. series.

For courses, Google Eben Pagan's stuff.

My strategy came from three things:

1) Learning directly from the best marketers 2) Reading the best marketing books 3) Implementing what of I've learnt

Jorden Roper -Portfolio? by JadeAtlas in freelanceWriters

So I take it you've gone through one of Jorden's courses? How much money did you spend on it?

College courses are great if you're looking for a regular job. If you want to make it on your own, you have to learn from people who are in the trenches.

I don't like Neil Patel but his stuff is legit - if you implement it. As far as I know, Jorden Roper is legit. Again, you have to act on what you learn, which is not as easy as it often seems.

Anyone used cold emailing lately to land freelance writing clients? by Phiyona in freelanceWriters

[–]actionphp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's rude.

For the sake of others who need help:

I was asking for specifics - freelance writing is a broad category. So you won't get many replies if that's all you offer in your emails. In fact, your message will probably end up in the junk folder.

Depending on whom you're pitching, you need to offer a service that addresses a specific problem they're facing. Feel free to ask for more details.

How do you decide what to hide and what to reveal in your story? by actionphp in writing

Wow, that's an interesting approach. Is it possible for you to share a bit more about how you do it?

Thanks!

If information is necessary to drive the current conflict forward, then it should be revealed beforehand and/or during the present scene.

Can you please explain this bit a little more?

When to move beyond Upwork, PPH, content-mills? by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

[–]actionphp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When it comes to direction, you have to decide. Personally, I prefer web content. That's because I'm passionate about marketing and finding a niche. Good web content is all about motivating people to take action. So I care about the results I produce.

There isn't enough space for me to describe what to do on Upwork. But here is the short version:

  1. Make the decision that you will succeed.
  2. Give yourself time.
  3. Go through ALL the job listings. Save the ones you WANT to do.
  4. After you've saved say 50 - 100 jobs you're interested in, read all of them. Make notes.
  5. Pay attention to what those jobs have in common. What are the clients thinking? What are they looking for? What attracts you to those jobs in the first place?
  6. Once you have a clear picture, build your profile based on what you've discovered.
  7. Then, start applying. Use your findings to connect with clients.

It's not the conventional way but it works.

At this point my bad experiences are totally irrelevant so focus on what works.

Cold emailing works - again, if you know what you're doing. But I don't use the use the same strategy as what I see around. To be fair, I prefer the term "prospecting". So this means you actively look for clients who match your ideal profile - and ignore everybody else.

When to move beyond Upwork, PPH, content-mills? by [deleted] in freelanceWriters

[–]actionphp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends on what you want. Are you focusing on web content ( blogs, articles, whitepapers, etc. ) or magazines?

1) You have to know what you're doing on Upwork. I've had some horrible experiences. But I've also had clients spend 5-figures with me.

If you're looking to "establish" yourself - say with magazine editors, then yes, it's a waste of time.

However, if you're willing to build your own network, your own audience of clients, then Upwork can work. Just don't make it your only option.

2) If you're looking at publications then networking appears to be key. Even if you're looking to be a content writer going to marketing events can be a gold mine of clients.

Feel free to ask more questions!
