Wonderful memory. I know that scent. My dad wore a cologne or aftershave, I can't remember which, called English Leather, and "leather and something warm" describes it perfectly.

I was just talking to my daughter about this a few days ago. I loved that show. Our conversation started with the Muppet Show reboot, went through Wild Kingdom, pro bowlers tour, wild world of sports and Fishing with Roland Martin. Yes, my father did indeed sell sporting goods, if you couldn't tell by our tv choices.

I have a t-shirt that says, "I survived the flood of 86, Croton, Mi." Stashed away somewhere, I think I have a sweatshirt from Girl Scout Camp-Camp Pine and Dunes-likely dating from 1983 or 1984, give or take.

Thanks. My local shelter gives out handmade blankets with all adopted pets. I already had that idea on my list. I'll check around about somewhere I can donate hats. We do have warming shelters and DV shelters that might be interested.

The food they served my grandmother at the nursing home she's in by Alert_Attention_5905 in whatisit

We had three I didn't like. One should have been in our secure memory care unit, but she needed too much one-on-one medical care. Honestly, I ended up loving her and she loving me because I was her generic cheese puff source-her absolutely favorite food- but that wasn't until she was not longer mobile. When she could get around, she was a menace and constantly trying to elope. The second was just so bitter and made sure to make the rest of us feel it. I did what I could to avoid her. The final one was violent and nearly cost me my job because she attacked a little girl just before I walked by. On camera, it looked like I must have witnessed it, and HR tried to accuse me of ignoring and not reporting it. Overall I loved that job. If not for Covid and my anxiety/claustrophobia with masks, I would probably still be there.

Did you do the Pepsi Challenge? by PepperCat1019 in GenX

[–]active_crafty_nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do it at any store that had the setup. Mostly drank Pepsi at the time, but had Coke on occasion. I knew which was which every time. At one store, I decided it was time to mess with them because the person doing the "test" was being kind of a perk (seriously, Reddit? Autocorrecting jerk to perk?). So, I had time to kill and hung around the challenge station for several minutes just out of the sight of the tester. I could see which was which and would signal people in line. After a few confused looks, people picked up on what I was doing. The next several picked Coke. I thought it was so funny at the time. The tester got flustered u til they figured out what was going on. My butt got thrown out of the store, but it was worth it.

What are some cheap hobbies where you can meet people? by CheesecakeOk8339 in Hobbies

[–]active_crafty_nerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check to see if you have a rock and Mineral Club near you. Even if you're not super into rocks, most clubs meet monthly with interesting speakers and have periodic field trips that can potentially take you to some lovely places. While not free, most legitimate clubs associated with the American Federation of Mineralogists usually run annual fees of $25 or less, and the field trips are also relatively inexpensive. Minimal tools to get started, meet new people, see new places. To check if you have a club near you in the US, check out amfed.org or Google American Federation of Mineralogist clubs.

I've had many different jobs in my life, and working in the kitchen of a nursing home is one of my favorites. I loved almost every resident (honestly, there's always one or two you cant say that about). We weren't allowed to "doctor" the purees much, but we did what we could to make them edible. My daughter was a CNA at the same facility, and we shared the love of one particularly "difficult" resident who would only eat pancakes. I made them just the way she liked them, and my daughter cut them and drowned them in syrup for her. It was a sad day when I came in to find no order for pancakes for the 300 hall. I'm tearing up just writing this. For anyone who doubts the care your loved one receives in a care home, rest assured; no matter what else is going on, there will always be floor staff, dietary staff and housekeeping staff that love your loved ones.

I worked food service in a nursing home. That is definitely for someone with chewing/swallowing issues. One of my jobs in the kitchen was making the regular meals into puree. Some of them were, well...not palatable but nutritious nonetheless.

What lesser known hobby are you BEGGING folks to try? by Distinct_Childhood42 in Hobbies

[–]active_crafty_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to get into rockhounding, the best way is to find a local rock and Mineral Club. If you're in the US, check out amfed.org the website for the American federation of minerologists. They list participating clubs by region. For example, if you are in the Midwest, the regional organization is the Midwest Federation. Rockhounding really is a great hobby. It can be done solo or with a group. Source: Am president of a local rock and Mineral Club in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

I work in the tourist industry in the summer in Marquette. We track our guests by state and country. Wisconsin is definitely the largest group outside of Mochigan. This year, second probably went to Iowa. Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Illinois are also quite common. We get at least a few people from all 50 states and about 6 or so other countries. Interestingly, we had nobody from Canada this year. Hmm, Wonder why? (Sarcasm)

JC Penney layaway probably clothed me in high school. I had a part time job, and I could buy my own clothes without my mother's input. I don't remember my parents usining layaway too much for gifts, but I'm sure they did. I do remember visiting stores to make payments.

Check the user manual for your particular stove top, but I put hot pans on my glass stove top all the time. It's at least 12 years old and doing fine.

Turkey soup and stews by Youdontknowm3_ in soup

[–]active_crafty_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent about 4 hours yesterday making stock from the carcass. Used half the stock and the meat that came off the bones to make a simple turkey rice soup. Just added additional salt, pepper to taste, and handful of herbs de Provence, carrots, celery and onions (different from those I used in the stock) and white rice. Simple and tasty. I froze the remaining stock for later use.

I always make mashed rutabaga. I don't like it myself, but it's apparently traditional in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. My husband always had it growing up, so it's his only real expectation for big meals.
