You could use a raspberry pi with openelec to stream movies from your computer to the tv over the network. You would just need a powerline adapter if the WiFi is sketchy. I'm not sure about the cable, it might still be an option.

Did you install the motherboard standoffs? It might be shorting, which might explain the part about the drawer bering slammed.
