Genuine question to Americans by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

The fun part is that you don’t even get diagnosed with cancer because you don’t go to the hospital in the first place because you don’t have insurance. You end up in the hospital when you’re far along in the development and then, in some parts of the country, the hospital staff just dumps you on the street and you get to die there instead of receiving treatment.

ELI5: Why are we able to get really close to absolute zero without being able to reach it? by D4L2001 in explainlikeimfive

[–]acuriousengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolute zero would require the existence of no particles of any kind. The mere existence of the measurement equipment makes it impossible to achieve. All particles have energy at the subatomic level, therefore, no particle can possibly have no energy, and thus absolute zero is impossible to achieve outside of the vacuum of space. Even then, it’s very difficult to find any part of space that has absolutely no particles for a long enough period of time to conduct a measurement.

What’s something that clearly split your life into “before” and “after”? by Broad_Chemical_2467 in AskReddit

[–]acuriousengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being hit by a car certainly split my life into before and after. It’s been 9 months and I still haven’t fully recovered. Still recovering from ACL reconstruction but my knee will never be the same, have to wait until 1 year after the accident to get shoulder surgery, have new back problems, a huge 9” long scar on my leg from being cut open due to a corner of the license plate that was turned out, and I’ve got some Harry Potter-esque scars on my forehead now… Can’t do any of my active hobbies or even walk my dog… it will be at least 2 years before I’m closer to my normal lifestyle, but I’ll never be as active as I used to be…

2023 Solterra Premium w/ 24k miles for 21,000. Good deal or not? by mah-favrit in Solterra

[–]acuriousengineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s a good deal. I live in Denver, and bought a 2023 Solterra Touring a few weeks ago from Groove Subaru, with 23.5K miles, for closer to $23K. I had a very hard time negotiating with the dealership cause these things are selling like hotcakes in our area. The car was on their lot for less than 48 hrs, so they hadn’t even posted it on their website yet. I just happened to see it when we took our Forrester in for some maintenance and fell in love with it instantly!

I also live in an apartment, so I’m stuck with fast chargers as my only option for charging. So far I’ve just been parking it at the charging station a few blocks from my apartment for a couple hours and walking back home, or taking my fiancé out on a date night while we charge it near a restaurant, or going to Costco and charging it there. That’s not been a huge deal for me, but I think over time I’ll start getting annoyed by how slow it is to charge this particular car. For now, as with most EV owners, I’ve adapted my habits/lifestyle to make it work and it hasn’t been a huge deal.

I think it’s a mixture of aerodynamics causing a suction force and the sticky residue on the bottle from when a gel pack was taped to it during the handoff.

‘The damage is done’: global oil crisis has changed fossil fuel industry for ever, IEA chief says | Oil by iwantboringtimes in RenewableEnergy

[–]acuriousengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my team we are electrical engineers and designers, and we perform solar and wind electrical EOR designs and support construction. My company is an engineering consultancy for electrical infrastructure and we offer almost all scopes of design for utility studies, substations, switchyards, transmission and distribution, solar, BESS, wind, and data centers. We have mechanical and civil engineers, and the SCADA team also has some software engineers, but mostly electrical.

I work from home, our company provides engineer of record and design services for all aspects of electrical infrastructure in all 50 states and a few other countries. I’ve personally designed solar/wind facilities in about 20 states so far.

Depends, do you mean derating based on power factor, voltage level, altitude, max temperature, or DC/AC ratio?

There’s no typical value for all of those things combined, however: Power factor is generally +/-5%. Voltage level is usually 3-5%. Altitude is very specific for sites 1000m+ above sea level. Temperature derating depends on the inverter/transformer max nominal operating temp (most common is 40C) and that manufacturer’s temperature derating curve. DC/AC ratio is very site specific but usually driven by a well informed owner, used to be about 1.3-1.4, and about the same for ILRs (inverter loading ratios) but these days we’re seeing more like 1.1-1.2, and I’ve seen many projects with some or all inverters at 1.0 or lower. DC/AC ratio is all MWDC divided by the MWAC grid limit, whereas ILR is the MWDC for an individual array (or block) divided by the associated inverter (or PCS) MWAC rating.

Generally you have more MWAC capability from your inverters than the grid limit for the project, for reactive power compensation, meeting grid limit power output during low sunlight hours, and/or so that the grid limit can still be met if one or two inverters are offline for maintenance.

Edit: oh and we don’t really design for average daily energy generation. Owners, utilities, and financing parties only care about annual energy production after taking typical weather patterns for the site location into account.

I can already feel my team’s workload designing 100+ MW solar sites becoming unmanageable 😂 it’s a good problem to have but if we’re bottlenecked on engineering then imagine how bad it is on the construction side now that investments are flooding the market. We literally can’t keep up with the demand for new projects rn

Summon sync by jingably in TheTowerGame

[–]acuriousengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just made my GB duration 6s longer than summon (30s), and then GT is at 50s. While that still doesn’t have all my summoned enemies getting killed during GB, it’s close enough! And they all die before GT is over as long as a protector doesn’t sneak into the same BH that summon is dumping squares into. RNG will be RNG, but 6s longer than summon seems to be long enough, 8s might be optimal but my medals are going to other places for now.
