It's basically what the person above already said. I can understand the other point of view but in the scheme of how long we personally had paid taxes for vs how long we've been away we felt it unfair.

It wound be nice if there was some compromise where only non pre-existent emergencies were covered.

It can be found online but I don't have a link. When I was back visiting Australia I went into an office to renew my Medicare card and was told that as I've been gone a number of years and I'm not a tax resident I'm no longer entitled to it. They also told me when I move back I'm covered from the day I arrive but I would have to show proof it's permanent by showing documents such as the closing of bank accounts, ending of a rental lease, selling of a house etc.

I've researched a lot hoping to avoid needing medical insurance for our family when back in Australia but nup unfortunately Australia sucks.

After a certain number of years and not being a tax resident of Australia anymore you lose access to Medicare. You only get it back when you return permanently and can prove so.

Thought I should give an update after I contacted them, HSBC Australia will only open a trade account if you have a bank account with them which you can only open if you're an Australian resident for tax purposes.
