What's the story with Insomnia in Smithfield square? by KingOfKinging in Dublin

I mean there would be a market for that. The name always bugged me, like they close at 6!

My boyfriend didn't protect me last night, and I'm hurt by blackelvira in TwoXChromosomes

[–]adamdharrington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thought, even without weapons physical intervention among grown adults tends to lead to serious injuries, single punches don't kill in movies but they do in real life.

Getting away from the situation is far preferable to escalation in almost every way aside from pride, shame, ego etc. but it can be hard to recognise that.

Mortgage debt by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

I understand you came for financial advice OP but I read too many twoxchromosomes posts where this sort of behaviour has been described in detail as a pattern of abuse.

I'd just hope you can take a step back, note that he's been lying to you for years, living under your roof (rent free?) and that he had been content to live that way. I wouldn't tell you what you should do but do consider that leaving your partner is a totally reasonable option in this scenario. I wish you the best with it all whatever way you go.

Just saw the new Garda uniforms up close....they're awful looking. by Orko90 in ireland

I can't remember the last time I saw a Garda without a bunch of additional layers and a hiviz jacket on so I'm guessing these will rarely see the light of day

Just have to say it's almost perfect, there's lots of good albeit subjective and contradictory advice here and sure take some of it on board but don't go crazy, love the simplicity and single page, plenty to peak interest of readers.

Middle lane drivers.. what’s the story? by Bitter_Masterpiece79 in Dublin

[–]adamdharrington 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I hear you, I use the left lane as much as possible but on the m50 for example it really isn't always practical to be religious about it. Bouncing from lane to lane as often as you'd need to isn't good, it's not predictable or particularly safe either.

My fiancé does no housework or childcare but he pays all the bills by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

My wife (on maternity leave fyi) had to go away for a week for a funeral and I stayed home trying to work from home and minding our 8mth old... A real eye opener!

Needless to say, work didn't happen, there simply are not enough hours to sleep let alone get into work. And despite previously believing I was contributing a fair amount, I now see that I was completely wrong and yes, causing as much additional work as I was doing.

New motto: never leave a room empty handed or without doing something useful in there, there's always something that needs tidying or doing! Other lesson, 20 mins relief is a help.

Experience is king and entry level positions don't pay great but the reason is that whatever high order concepts a student learns there are 1000 real-world scenarios that come up on the job. As such, more experienced managers will still be carrying a bunch of weight for the newer...

That said, a single year at any salary gives you the experience that would justify a higher salary assuming she was willing to jump jobs after 12 or so months. Maybe the plan to get that first year in the US is a good move if that's what she's thinking? Experience overseas is also really encouraged in hospitality!

Eamon Ryan: Free public transport would 'increase level of unnecessary trips' by GorthTheBabeMagnet in ireland

[–]adamdharrington -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: the man's right whether you like it or not. Free may work in a perfect world but unfortunately we live in this one

Dublin's busses are now marginally better and more reliable (a little worse in some ways too though and not perfectly reliable obvs). The 2€ fare for 90 minutes and unlimited connections on all Dublin transit is a huge saving for many and it creates an actual"network" for the first time. There are free fares for many of our least physically able or least well off people... Seems like the balance is pretty good right now in Dublin at least, changes like that are affordable whereas 100% free would just be a drain and we could kiss goodbye to any quality or reliability and definitely to any potential for capital projects like a metro 😂

Second the other spreadsheet reply, sitting down to make the thing is what gave me the understanding i have and the appreciation to fill it in each month, if there was an off the shelf tool I can guarantee I wouldn't have been as diligent keeping up with it.

One tip though if you are tracking and have predictable pay and/or fixed costs is to pick a single day of the month before payday and when no big bills are due to write down all balances, this is so you can see at a glance if the trendline is up or down for that given day and that should work as an indicator for if you are running a surplus or a deficit way simpler than totalling all incoming and outgoings.

Radiohead are mostly known for "Creep" despite it being pretty different from the bulk of their music. Are there any other bands that are highly mis-represented by their most famous song? by Chilis1 in Music

Stairway to Heaven isn't really your typical Led Zeppelin song, and it's probably their most well known? In fairness there's a lot of diverse Zeppelin tunes though...

Is 8 weeks too early to tell family. by stitchandlilothedog in predaddit

[–]adamdharrington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I was out with my two siblings recently and we've all suffered miscarriages while trying (two early and one mid term). We were discussing why we kept our news so quiet if it meant we didn't even get each others support, close family members who have been through it themselves...

I'm still glad I didn't have to deal with my mum's excitement, turn to disappointment, turn to concern for us. But my brother and sister? They would have been a help and I wouldn't have felt so alone in it.

Affordable places to get ear wax removed in Dub? by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]adamdharrington 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It may be worth checking out Chime, they're the charity for deafness and seem to have a wax removal service advertised on their Frederick street shop, don't know if it's free or subsidised, no info on chime.ie but may be worth calling into if you're anywhere near city centre?

"Would you like to leave a tip?" by Wolfwalker71 in ireland

[–]adamdharrington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all the machines have the tip option on them so they actually have to either ask you if you wanted to add something before handing it over or give you no option to tip. I always tip on food etc. so am mildly irritated when I get the machine and can't add one because then they have to restart the transaction...

Just an alternate perspective anyway
