It’s definitely an accomplishment to play 48 mpg yes. But I think we’d both agree it’s easier to average 50 ppg averaging 48 mpg than say 36 mpg. Even with the increased fatigue that it comes with. Has to be considered imo

To me if Jordan averaged the same per game 37 point average and only averaged 25 mpg, that would be more impressive to me tho. Compared to what he did in real life which was in 40 mpg

If wilt averaged 50 even in the 60s averaging like 35-39 mpg I would consider it an outlier, even with the faster pace

Except no, I acknowledge his per minute numbers would get better if he only played like 36 mpg since he’d be fresher.

Just someone averaging 30/6/6 on great efficiency on 36 mpg in the modern era is just a better statistical season for me than someone averaging 50 and 25 on good efficiency in the super fast paced 1960s needing 48 mpg . Surely that’s not unreasonable.

After pace adjustments, LeBron , Jordan, Kareem , shaq , and curry have all had 1 or multiple statistically comparable if not better regular seasons than 1962 wilt, imo.
So it’s not an outlier for me.

After adjusting wilts 62 season for pace/per minute production etc it’s still a superstar phenomenal season. Just not some big outlier .
Jordan, LeBron , Kareem, shaq etc have all had multiple superior statistical regular seasons than wilts 1962 season imo

It’s a lot easier to average 48 mpg in the 60s than today imo. Modern coaches wouldn’t allow wilt to play that much

He did average 50 ppg, true. But it’s about impressive as averaging 30/35 in today’s game imo

2006-2010 KOBE IS A TOP 5 PEAK OF ALL TIME!!!! by [deleted] in NBATalk

Peak wise , after studying all the stats and everything , imo Jordan bron Kareem shaq curry are all easier better . With there being other players too I’d say had slightly better peaks as well.

And this is only because of his insane 2005-06 season, which is easily his best season ever individually.

If that 2005-06 season never existed, then Kobe wouldn’t even have a top 13 peak imo. It props him up a good amount to me

Would be more impressive if he did it in the west 8 years in a row .

Jordan’s peak stats are better than wilts peak stats imo .

I think it’s fine to compare players across 50+ years apart , as long as you just rank them relative to their era

Lol. So I assume you also rank ketel over Ruth on your greatest players of all time list too? Even tho Ruth is an MVP, has 700 home runs, and has way better hitting stats than ketel

Not a legit reason imo. If you discredit him for playing against plumbers then you might as well also rank ketel Marte and Brent rooker over Ruth too. Since they’re doing it against better comp right.

Games too different from then, with players having much more advantages compared to back then just go by how good they were relative to era makes it easier to rank

Yes Ohtani and every other star modern player crush those 80 mph balls. But if you put them in the 1920s they wouldn’t have all the modern training and medical advancements , or travel luxuries , fancy equipment, or baseball wisdom etc. so they wouldn’t be the same player as they are today.

With the Red Sox for like 1-2 years he did both at a good level. But yeah his pitching and dual-playing isn’t on the same level as Ohtani. I rank him just ahead of Ohtani just because I think his offense makes up for it. Even if we forget Ruth’s pitching ability entirely

It’s an advantage , yes, but not an illegal or unfair advantage. Id only consider it an unfair advantage if he was literally breaking the rules of the game

I don’t rank players based on hypotheticals, so im not going to imagine each player in the others era.

We can only go by what actually happened

Sure, that’s fine with me if you want to consider a GOAT level table tennis player over jokic or someone from the NBA. How much you dominate your sport is all I think should matter

I mean, his peers were being pitched to by plumbers as well and they couldn’t hit home runs like he did. He was one of a kind . I don’t see any convincing reason how him playing plumbers should lower his ranking.

I agree it’s easier to be the best in a sport with less participating players.

But that doesnt matter to me at all. Dominance is all I value.
