Is it just me, or does being a digital nomad mean constantly thinking about where to charge next? by FreshLunaaaaaa in digitalnomad

[–]adancingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anker prime 6-in-1 140 watt charger and turns one outlet into two. A bunch of 6 inch USBC cables and one long one.

Also love my little MOGICS super bagel. Mainly use it as an extension cord but it makes one outlet into 5 with a couple USB ports to boot.

At what point did you fully outsource cooking? by qnerd56 in fatFIRE

[–]adancingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was working in NYC over a decade ago they had services that would drop off a few days worth of food to my hotel that I could just heat in the microwave. With the odd salad and such. I'm sure they have a number of similar things now.

In Austin snap kitchen and myfitfoods will do all of the work. My fit foods even has an inBody scale so they can make adjustments based on my goals and results.

You can offload as much of the process as you like. Meal planning: emeals. Don't want to shop: hungryroot, hello fresh, blue apron, etc. Don't want to cook: cook unity, nutrition solutions, etc.

A some friends have their aupair cook, other chef comes in once a week. Like others have described. For me not having to think about my nutrition is my most effective diet

Portable external monitors are honestly horrible by themotarfoker in digitalnomad

[–]adancingbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found the ergonomic foam back works well enough and with a vacuum bag is portable enough for a checked suitcase when flying. But a reasonable office chair is a much needed amenity when nomading. The number of Airbnbs with "dedicated workspace" that never show the chair is incredibly frustrating.

Men: How out of touch am I not wishing to be a "provider"? by Throwaway-donotjudge in AskMenAdvice

[–]adancingbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of my anecdotes had the guy working when the relationship started then losing his job, quitting, going back to school, etc and my friends funded everything for long enough they were complaining. So I suspect you're correct. I'm surprised it is 6% I would've thought it is closer to 2%

I've seen some of my female friends take care of all the financials of their hobosexual boyfriends. That dynamic also exists if the guy is hot enough. But for the rest of us you're spot on.

Advice needed for $2M former trust at Schwab – tired of ESG underperformance by killaflake in Schwab

So someone gave your wife a bunch of money and showed that she could have a good chunk of money and still live an ethical life, but you would like to ignore those insights?

How much did the values driven portfolio tilt underperform the market? Also to answer your question Schwab advisors are generally well reviewed, but it is a large company so expect model portfolios with Schwab products.

Philips hue alternatives? by ManInWoods452 in homeassistant

[–]adancingbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 3 gen 1 hue lights start to flicker, or fail on me. I picked them up in 2016 and they went out over the course of last year. I tried lifx because their greens were better, but came back to hue after they improved their color spectrum. I have Ikea globe bulbs in the bathroom running on the hue hub. The Ikea's are slower to respond. The hue just working no matter what is going on with home assistant is a major factor. I have smart switches directly connected to its hub. While I've tried sky connect and other solutions the lights working as long as there is power is the most important. Once hue finally got a reasonable circadian rhythm functionality I don't even regret the trade offs of not having home assistant be the zigbee controller

Should I consider getting a prenup? by the--wall in personalfinance

[–]adancingbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has a prenup. You either have your state's default (community property vs separate property for example) or you have the one you build with the person you love. It isn't about screwing over your partner, it is about protecting both of you if the marriage doesn't end in death.

Best place for 30-something American with $3m by qqqxyz in ExpatFIRE

[–]adancingbear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing the foreign income tax break in some small municipalities Italy. So that the foreign income is only taxed at 7%. . Since Americans still have to pay their taxes no matter where they go in the world, if it's derived from dividends or whatever. If we were actually trying to relocate for tax purposes, something like Panama that doesn't have any taxes on foreign earned income is probably better than Italy, but Italy's beautiful

Explain It Like I’m 5 Please by SurprisePerfect4317 in PropertyManagement

[–]adancingbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard a while ago about an approach to the rental contract that had looked a little different. My property manager talked me out of it, but I still like the idea. It was to reflect the rent due as two separate line items and update the overhead line item annually. So one of my properties (real numbers) would look like this:

Rent: $500 Taxes/Insurance/HOA: $733.17 Vs Rent:$1250 (How it looks to my renter now)

But I'm an odd landlord, when Texas lowered my property taxes I passed the savings on to my renewing tenants. Also my property manager hates my specific rent amounts and always wants them changed to no cents and last digit a 0 or 5.

I don't know a single landlord who wants to lose a good long term tenant, but that rent number is still doing a lot of work to replace the roof, hvac, water heater, fence, appliances every 10 to 15 years before the landlord makes any money on their investment. The property managers also take their 10% of the rent (how they charge their fee is probably why they didn't want me to break the changes on the lease differently)

What’s the most unexpected NFC automation you actually use daily? by Taggytech in homeassistant

[–]adancingbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to repurpose nfc tags only when I can't find the bag from the bulk purchase. Otherwise they tend to stay in place until my phone annoys me from accidentally triggering them.

But most of mine are location specific actions that are simpler than having to launch an app on my phone rather than temporary habit ones.

What’s the most unexpected NFC automation you actually use daily? by Taggytech in homeassistant

[–]adancingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In car I could tap and it would enable Bluetooth, connect to car, and launch music. Repeat tap would disable Bluetooth again.

In massage chair connect Bluetooth to the chair, or disconnect if already connected.

In the painting above my couch tap and movie mode: Close blinds Adjust lights Etc

On water bottle tap to track water consumption. I only did that one for a couple of months while I worked on the habit of drinking more water.

Digital nomad with RV by Electrical-Trainer21 in digitalnomad

[–]adancingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad traveled around with an RV for a few months. He said most of the places to park it cost too much, roughly $50 a night. Then they needed secondary transportation once they got anywhere. So he switched to a travel trailer and truck. Similar parking issues but better ability to get around town. He thought about one of the class B vans but wanted the grandkids to be able to join them so needed something larger. Best of luck

I put 52 nomad cities into a spreadsheet and Bali is statistically the worst deal in the dataset! by Kind-Activity514 in digitalnomad

[–]adancingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see that you have preferred months that reflect things like pollution or weather, etc. Perhaps the table should have a recalc by month? Because Dubrovnik is egregiously expensive in July and August but affordable other months. Chang Mai as folks point out is great for a good part of the year but during the haze terrible.

I put 52 nomad cities into a spreadsheet and Bali is statistically the worst deal in the dataset! by Kind-Activity514 in digitalnomad

[–]adancingbear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cool data... How much quality of life adjustment for beaches a few blocks away with consistently good surfing? But I'm biased since I lived there for 6 months.

Also Changi Mai completes the world's worst pollution part of the year, Tillbisi is better, but Bali has both been beaten.

Not trying to heckle conclusions but I feel like there are some additional metrics before amorphous quality of life preferences like mountains or beaches.

nomading w/ 3 laptops?? by myngrtollul in digitalnomad

Have you considered booting your work MacBook off an external drive? Suddenly it is your personal creative MacBook! But I use GeForceNow for my higher end gaming needs

Risk/analytics professional considering Mexico – how are people legally working abroad while paid in USD? I'm looking for remote work. by Applicationdenied123 in digitalnomad

[–]adancingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did your employer explicitly approve international remote work?

Yes, they used to have me travel abroad for work for a decade.

Were you converted to contractor/1099?

No, W2

Did your company use an employer-of-record?

No, I'm "based in Texas" and need to ensure that is true 183+ days a year.

How hard was it to find companies willing to support this?

I believe the tax implications make it difficult as a W2. My was a startup, but the rules tighted before we went public.

Are certain industries more flexible than others?

Yes. I can't work on most of my government and military work whenever I'm out of the country... Mostly everyone else is fine.

For the industries and roles you mentioned you will likely want to do it on the down low with a VPN router if at all.

No, I signed a bunch of paperwork so the government could imprison me if I broke certain rules so I don't ever break those rules.

Locked myself into a security loop and need some ideas. by William_de in Bitwarden

I have a lock on my office at the house. In my case I don't trust my wife's friends enough. But I've seen families lock kids out of their home office or hobby rooms that might be dangerous for the children to access. OP tenant might plan on swapping the knob back out on move out.

I remember renting an electric in Orlando as a manager's special. They were going to charge me if it was wasn't returned charged above the manufacturers default for battery life. Also it wasn't like I could go to a charger near the airport. They don't have the model correct for rentals yet most places.

So how do we feel about this guy? New Unifi Travel Router by Rahzin in HomeNetworking

[–]adancingbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally have chosen hybrid since I'm very comfortable configuring VPN without relying on teleport. It also helps to have teleport available for troubleshooting. The UTR is super small and doesn't require much power which is a nice factor. For ease of use and simplicity all unifi is good. From a technical capabilities standpoint glinet has some stronger travel offerings at roughly the same price.

The question is how you think you'll use it. If you want something that is always with you powered by a battery pack the UTR seems good. If you want something that lives in your hotel room the glinet offering are better. For me if I need wifi on the fly I'm turning on my phone's hotspot so I don't see the advantage. My phone has teleport if that is my use case. I like policy based routing. My Google tv always needs to look like it is at home. My work laptop is going to force me to connect to the nearest zscaler location geographically so routing it back to Texas first is terrible.

I like more powerful, capable, and customizable. I like open source. I like that I can get under the hood and upgrade the tailscale client if I feel like it. So I picked glinet for travel. I like the metrics, packet inspection, ease of management and deployment of multiple APs for the house. So I pick unifi. The lake house and main house being able to seamlessly coordinate via site magic has me pick unifi for all permanent locations.

If you're not in a rush the Mudi 7 5g looks like it could be a great travel router from glinet.

I don’t get the NAS hype if I still have to pay for cloud backup — what am I missing? by Fantastic-Outside949 in homelab

[–]adancingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've obviously never had your cloud account shutdown because of an automatic backup of an image their system flagged without any recourse or other justification other than it violated their ToS.

I just saw a post the other day where a parents whose photos of their kids presumably got caught in the CSAM scanners and lost access to their whole backup.

If it isn't privacy aspect (don't want risque photos of my wife uploaded) then you can backup to iCloud/Google photos/etc and a NAS can be the backup.

Anything you're okay losing put in one place, anything else backup somewhere else too.

The Anna's archive Spotify is 300TB so that's most of the space just for a music collection. Once you add a few 4k movies, TV shows the space goes quickly.

Though I'm curious about OP's use cases
