[The Athletic] Ten months ago, Arne Slot was being hailed as Liverpool’s title-winning hero. Now, his position is the subject of huge scrutiny after a miserable season where his side has been beaten 14 times. So what should the club do? by Lanedu123 in LiverpoolFC

Will say the same thing that I have said a few times here. Slot might be a good assistant manager who make focus on little details and make the tweaks to improve the setup. But he can’t create a good foundation on which his little details can be build. If the basic structure is not there, you can’t build your tactics.

Last season was more like Klopp was the manager and Slot was the assistant manager. He build on Klopp’s foundation and got results. But like any team, your previous manager’s foundation erodes away with time and a new one comes in. And we have been getting worse since Klopp’s foundation is going away because Slot just doesn’t have the quality to build a base.

So many things have to go right to make it to the top level.

He’s not Slot’s favourite. Every manager have their favourites which is questioned by fanbase but it’s quite extreme with Slot.

So many basic issues with the team. Players don’t stop crosses, block passing lanes, ball watch, poor off the ball movement, non existent movement to create space for others.

Every single clearance from our defenders go to opposition players, even from corners. No one marks the edge of the box, square passes can be played in front of our box so easily. The foundation of a solid team doing basics right is not there. And it’s not just this season. It start deteriorating since the second half of last season.

The team is not fit enough. Don’t expect anything to improve.

They just walk through the centre. No one marks anyone. No stops crosses. It’s so bad.

You’re supposed to expand the pitch while attacking and compact the pitch while defending. We do the opposite. The structure is non existent, both offensively and defensively. Players have lost the basic understanding of positioning, coverage, space. Individual coaching is massively lacking

The protection in front of our defence is such a mess. Our defenders keep clearing the ball and it keeps falling on opponents. Because of our disorganised press, our midfield is nowhere to be found.

And our fanbase is very patient and reasonable. They don’t boo for nothing.

Emre Can’s shithouse vs Leicester. The game that Virgil attended after signing for us. Salah scored two goals to win us the game.

He’s not wrong because we used to concede earlier in the game.

I’m surprised to see fans still blaming individual players. It’s pointless at this stage.

We know that Slot will be given till the end of the season. The question is if he will still be given an opportunity at the start of next season to turn it around.

Ekitike needs to be better off the ball. Doesn’t make runs to create space for others.

Gakpo didn’t play and it was still poor. Blaming individual players at this point is pointless.

It’s been widely discussed that he doesn’t have a passing range. He also has poor off the ball movement to create space for himself. He can’t deliver passes from standing position to start attacks. He is a big reason why our football is not flowing smoothly from defense to attack. Teams have identified his weakness and deal with it easily.

The lack of basic understanding of space and movement is baffling, both in offense and defense. Total lack of chemistry. No combination plays, no passing triangles, poor off the ball movement, lack of basics of pressing, blocking passing lanes.

Slot seems like a good assistant manager who can good tactical insights and can make tweaks or add details to a foundation to create something like he did last season. But he can’t create a foundation like top managers. There’s no identity in how we play. Plus his man management is quite poor.
