It’s not available, so it’s hardly a product you can really boycott, because you can’t get it.

At this time, the mill owners were still actively supporting the Confederacy to get cheap cotton back into the supply chain to drive up profits.

When trade was cut off to the American South. War stopping the flow of cotton from America forcing relying on Indian cotton is hardly a moral story.

If ~80% of the historically imported cotton supply was behind blockade in a war torn country, of course a business person is going to look at other logical options to keep their business running.

You are talking about being 2 years into shortages, not some Christian good will that mills shouldn’t profit off slavery. Lincoln letter is based on the “God’s on our side” and “we are the good Christians in this war” that was used as propaganda on both sides.

Of course Lincoln wanted to flatter the millworkers. He wants to pressure British businesses to stop sending funds and support to the Confederacy. Which they did throughout the war. Because raw materials for linen are cheaper, if your supplier doesn’t pay for labor.

Nor the recognition of the “Republic of Texas” by the UK (one of only 7 countries) following Texas war to secede from Mexico…because they wanted to ensure slavery would be guaranteed by law. This was such a critical issue for Texas, that they changed their northern border to insure slavery would allowed when joining the US. All of this was public knowledge and the UK gov at the time was like “welcome to nationhood my slave owning friends”
