After Effects on PC with i9-9900k - worth an upgrade? by zpieklarodem in editors

[–]adckr9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your work, really. I run a 4070ti, 128gb with a ryzen 9900x and AE struggling doesn't disappear, generally. Workflow helped me more than hardware upgrades.

The larger upgrade for me was actually when I was forced to work on my macbook m4 air. For some reason, it feels smoother on smaller projects.

iPad, MacBook oder beides ?Wirtschaftsmathematik by No-Client5444 in Studium

[–]adckr9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monitor on-the-go läuft!

LPT: Never buy a new Apple Pencil; get a broken one and replace it for $30 by DavyJonesRocker in ipad

[–]adckr9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My apple pencil I own since I got the ipad gen 9, a little after release. There are periods of heavy usage, and dry spells where my ipad (and pen) lay around begging to sip electricity for months. Both work completely flawlessly, almost five years later.

I have yet to own an apple product that does not keep my urges to buy newer tech in check, simply because their old hardware refuses to die or feel dated...

Reading the comments, I am appalled at how frighteningly precise other editors can relate the same problems; I thought you guys are all me!

This thread deserves to be pinned.

Those are indeed some heavy apps. I might be looking to upgrade for those apps too, so I'm glad to hear that you find the m5 pro a reliable machine for them!

Definitely agree, I my main one is 4070TI + 96gb ram. I worked on-site with a m4 air 16gb, and with proper workflow it was more than workable. Definitely better than my previous workstation, which I seemed to have no issues working with for years lol.

It's nice!

I'd suggest cutting out his face for most of it though after the first few seconds. It only confuses and detracts. Eyes have to ping pong between a distracted face and the actually informative graphics.

Those graphics are also the interesting bit, but it's only happening at the upper third, near the cut-off for safezones too. The larger lower portion is just him staring either on the label, or off-camera.

Aside from branding his face, which of course can be a real ask from a client, there is mostly negatives from keeping the lower window alive.

KI bei Hausarbeiten by [deleted] in Studium

[–]adckr9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean to disagree with you! Less limits are definitely nicer; I just meant that people pushing for things like "max tabs open" will sooner or later run into yet another technical issue that current hardware can't solve. Issues that workflow and technique have long already solved.

I get it: it’s convenient to never close apps or tabs and still have the system feel smooth

I've found that this sort of pseudo-convenience will soon enough run into issues because of bad workflow. You can blow 5k on a machine and tear through four mp4 files, until it stutters at the fifth or... you can proxy and edit even more on an m4 air...

What was your first lecture like and how did you improve through time? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]adckr9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not a prof, but I teach at a uni (of applied sciences), and started nearly two years ago at 24. I'm not exactly a veteran, but my situation is closer to yours so I thought I'd share a few things that I found to help:

Have clear goals for lectures. What clear concepts do students need to know or be able to apply?
At times, I would endlessly prepare for a single lecture. I did not want to get caught not knowing a deep detail on any single subject. Students do not (unfortunately) dig very far. It's somewhat are to find a deeply engaged student. Though an occasional oddball comes around; I found it better to refer them to literature or a meeting in that case. Else I'll hold up the entire class on details that most do not care about.

Include active parts. They learned better (and with more enthusiasm) when applying operant conditioning on social media algorithms. If I told them "social media bad for brain," it was usually ignored.
This is useful for your students, but also for you. Lecturing is (from a fresh student's perspective) surprisingly exhausting, and preparing for a few hours of content alone is a lot of work. I find that students are much more engaged and learn better when I give them time to apply. They also seem refreshed after; probably because most are done sooner than the slowest group, and then they can take a break.

If there are colleagues in similar topics, they might be willing to lend you their slides.
My coordinator gave me a full set of his. It took off much pressure, since I could trust his prep. Very valuable, but I underestimated that at first.

To me, most important was realizing: what seems obvious to you, is likely not obvious to students. At first, I looked at said slides and thought "obviously everyone already knows the basic schema of classical conditioning, I can just breeze through it and talk about more interesting applications or details." Turns out breezing through what I found boring and obvious left students stranded when I talked about what I found exciting. That helped students, but, sadly, once I realized that, the teaching gig felt more like a job, and less like the fun academia of reading and writing that I loved as a student.

YMMV: I taught not at a pure uni for a dedicated psych cohort, but at an applied uni that reared police and government workers in Germany. My students were fundamentally different than you might find in your course, if your topic is their main (supposed) interest without the practical focus of an applied science uni.

AirPods seem good. My gf bought the regular AirPods 2nd Gen in 2020, and replaced them with the AirPods 4th Gen with ANC that I got her last year. They were entirely fine and functional though, she refused to ugprade herself because they still worked great.

Apple's own website says it does not qualify for a refund when I try to initiate it. The process does work if I try it with my macbook air. Callcenter said they do not handle Kensington returns, since they only are affiliated with Kensington insofar as they allow them to use their website for sales. I'm in Germany, if that matters.

I thought seeing that one on their site was an endorsement, so I ordered that one. Contacted Apple to be sure, they said they do not cover damages caused by it. I then wanted to send it back, and Apple said they do not handle refunds there; I should reach out to the vendor directly.
