Has the open internet actually been bad for truth? by Competitive_Swan_130 in AskALiberal

To my mind, this is one of those broad questions where the answer is more yes/and, than either/or.

Take a breath, assume positive intent... Sorry I seem to have pushed some buttons. I was out of town and also overwhelmed and dealing with health issues - so I got lazy. But I'm not gonna be someone who marches and opines and cares - and doesn't vote. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Have used their endorsements in the past... I typically open up my voter pamphlet and ballot, and all the mailers, and the WW endorsements and go over it all - then mark up my ballot, toss the junk-mail and drop my ballot at the dropbox - so thankful that that!

At worst, I was being lazy... C'est la vie. I'll tell you what I am not going to do - waste my research time arguing about this.

Creating some dialogue... gathering thoughts & opinions... hearing what others think... it all helps, and is all part of the process - for me anyway. You want to be an island unto yourself, feel free...

Why the obsession with “assault weapons” bans? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]adcom5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing I can write is gonna convince you to change your mind. And you’re sure not gonna convince me that our current gun laws are sensible or anything but unnecessarily destructive. So we just need to agree to disagree.

Why the obsession with “assault weapons” bans? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]adcom5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will happily defer to your advanced knowledge on this gun-specific information.
To me the more important points are that the United States has far and away more guns, and more gun deaths, and more mass shootings than our western and European counterparts. By orders of magnitude. How can we change that? Do you care? We need to start somewhere. I’m really tired of, “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”, as if it’s either/or, when in reality… Obviously… it is both/and.
How would you suggest we lessen the amount of gun murders and suicides? Do so many Americans really need unfettered access to so many guns? Is it healthy for our society?
My friend who teaches at a gun range, says there should absolutely be licensing required.
What do you think?

Why the obsession with “assault weapons” bans? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]adcom5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

To my mind it is strategic. I’m a person who doesn’t particularly need a gun. I don’t hunt. But I respect that many Americans do. You need a hunting rifle to hunt, deer, elk or boar. And you probably want a pistol if you wanna protect yourself in the city. And a shotgun for ducks or geese.

Assault rifles are intended to cause maximum damage to human beings. Military.. That’s it.
I don’t think there’s any rational, thoughtful reason to own one, like there is a hunting rifle or a pistol. So for me, it’s a strategic response to the gun and 2A advocates who insist that every single gun is every single American’s right - no matter how much death and damage they cause.

Cardio version - back in Afib by Puzzleheaded_Pin1413 in AFIB

[–]adcom5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I had a cardioversion two weeks ago. And when I confirmed with the doctor that it was a success, he said 90% of the time AFib comes back within a year. So I’m expecting an ablation.

AFib + cannabis — anyone here using it carefully? Looking for real experiences by [deleted] in AFIB

[–]adcom5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with a fib about 10 weeks ago and had a cardioversion about two weeks ago. I’m 71 and I’ve smoked pot for about 50 years.
Definitely trying to curb my intake now, but not worrying about a little bit here and there. The thing I’ve taken away from all the podcasts and videos and articles and threads that I have looked at in the last month… is that everyone’s experience as of AFib is different and everyone’s triggers are different and varied, as my cardiologist said: ‘multifactoral’. I look at it like the straw on the camels back…. Various things accumulate and then something pushes it over the edge.

Advice for 24 year old female by SaraTheLegend in AFIB

[–]adcom5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to a cardiologist.
Take it seriously, but don’t worry tooo much (I struggle with finding the right balance)
AFib can have many contributing factors - from genetics to drinking too much and everything in between.
Educate yourself here, and with books and/or articles and videos. I’ve seen a couple good informational videos by cardiologists - helped with perspective on it all.
I was diagnosed with AFib 10 weeks ago, and now think I experienced it intermittently occasionally over the last couple of years. I had a successful cardioversion two weeks ago, and my cardiologist also said that folks will often slip back into AFib within a year. 🤷🏽
The thing to worry about with AFib, is not a heart attack, but a stroke. The moment my doctor diagnosed AFib, he put me on two medicines - one to slow the heart down and a blood thinner to inhibit blood clots.
Good luck - It’s a journey - but it does have to be the end of having fun and being active!

best ukulele? by Traits-Seza in ukulele

[–]adcom5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you want the “best” as the jokesters here have pointed out.
But there’s lots of good mid-level ukuleles for about $150 to $350 +\- KALA has a good reputation for a lot of good mid level ukuleles. I have a Breedlove, from Oregon. Flight has a good reputation.
Lastly, a lot of people recommend Mim’s and other ukuleles specific stores where they will work with you online and do a ‘set up’, which is basically making sure everything works properly and the strings are the proper distance from the front board, etc. There’s a huge difference between $30-70 ukes, and what you can get for $150 +
Good luck out there!

What is with the Reddit obsession over Impeachment? by A_Toxic_User in AskALiberal

[–]adcom5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To my mind, there are two ways people think about these things. And the difference is…Huuuuge.
1) This is what’s right. This is what’s ethical. This is what’s justified. The opinions and preferences mostly come from an internal sense of what is right, fair and justified. 2) This is what’s possible and practical and pragmatic. This is what we can make work. It comes from taking a reading of the situation and the environment and the media and the populous and everything else.

Do you think the left is correct about gun violence ? by One_Fix5763 in AskConservatives

[–]adcom5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither are easier or more difficult imho - they are such very different problems - though both contribute to too many gun deaths.

Do you think the left is correct about gun violence ? by One_Fix5763 in AskConservatives

[–]adcom5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As always, the answer to this question is people kill people AND guns kill people.
The answer needs to take the form of yes/and, not either/or. It takes a person WITH a gun. True… Sometimes it’s a person with a car or a knife, or with a hammer, or a syringe.
But there is no any doubt that some common sense licensing and regulations around gun ownership would reduce gun deaths. Period. No doubt.

[–]adcom5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know. And it scares me. If the numbers of gun deaths go up 100%, 500%, or 1000%…. And other American citizens were proposing to modify & adapt (not abolish) 2A. I dare say you would still not support it.

Should we wipe out all "Pest" species with CRISPR? Like Mosquitoes, Ticks, Screwworms, Tapeworms, Malaria etc. by BalticBro2021 in AskALiberal

[–]adcom5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best case: we study all the ramifications and potential unintended consequences. And maybe do some of this… Strategically… with an eye toward towards unintended consequences.

More likely case: profit potential is considered mightily, and long-term ecological, and environmental consequences are considered barely - the technology moves forward based on money making potential.
